Chapter 17
Gul’dan looked out over the battlements, staring at the fortress of Gornakhan on the horizon. An unearthly darkness now surrounded Gornakhan, a darkness Gul’dan knew would cover all of Glienor should Zamorack win the coming battle. As he watched he saw flying creatures above the fortress, but before he could tell what they were they were gone, lost in the growing darkness. The King of Varrock walked up beside him, and joined him in looking out at the fortress. “We are about to face the largest force ever to exist in Glienor,” Gul’dan said thoughtfully, “We must be insane.”
“Insane, yes. But you forget we will march at the head of an allegiance of the free races of Glienor, fighting so that all others might be free,” the King said, “And no darkness can ever extinguish the flame of hope that burns in the heart of every man, elf, and dwarf that fights with us. And Zamorack’s forces, no matter how numerous, will never be able to combat that. Our men go out there to die for others, to sacrifice their lives for those of the innocents, so that their lives may remain untouched by the shadow of war, and of the strife and famine it causes.”
After that speech the King stood silent next to Gul’dan. The two figures stood on the battlements, silent but strong; united in their knowledge that this may be their last night on Glienor, and that tomorrow hundreds of innocents would feel the cold hand of death.
