I can't think of any good political/social/economic reasons for a war in RuneSpace. Maybe religious differences? But both sides are Saradominist... We could always pit the human kingdoms against the wilderness, but I don't want to make another God War story.

Or how about this: Ardougne is way overcrowded in the future and they conquer the gnomes to get enough space to fit people. The gnomes plea for help, but Varrock decides to stay out of it. Hold on, I'm on a roll-

Ardougne thinks Varrock is about to attack them, so they blow up Varrock's space station. Our two heroes escape the space station just in time, come down to land and join the Varrockian army.

Anyway that's my idea.

hmmmm, i got an idea for you guys, mabye, just mabye, there are splits in friendship, one friend joins varrock, the other, ardy/fally. They come against each other in one great battle (the battle for control of runescape) and at the end they sacrifice themselves (not sacrifice as in drive a knife through your heart) to bring peace to runescape? just an idea...

Varrock is the BAD side.

Anyway, I had a slightly more economic/cybernetic idea.

Cloning.

Way in the future, people already outgrew robots, as they lacked the brain functioning and planning that only humans could have. So, a company called Cybernetics Cloning Incorporated (CCI) begins to look into human cyborgs that could be "grown" with twice the efficiency and half the cost of robots or human servants. They would have human brains and bodies, but have robotic processing too.

Anyway, Varrock got interested, and it attempted to buy into CCI. CCI is a Miscellanian-based operation center, and they see no reason to sell. Varrock goes away, unhappy but at least balanced out.

Then, two years later, CCI gets bought by Ardougne. Varrock is enraged. Ardougne offered LESS than Varrock, yet they still were accepted! In a rage, Varrockian soldiers blow up a cybernetics facility, killing thirty-seven Ardougne scientists and over fourty-seven thousand cyborg-clones. Ardougne is furious, and together with the Council of Kings in RuneScape, it places extreme economic and social sanctions on Varrock. Varrock's assets are virtually frozen, and Ardougne, in Varrock's eyes, is siezing all of Varrock's previous power.

So Varrock pleads with the Council of Kings, but they refuse adamantly. So Varrock, in poor thinking, arranges the assassination of the Ambassador of Ardougne. At the same time, spies break into the clonic facilities and databases and steal valuable information on cloning. Secretly, over a period of three months, a massive army is created. Varrock then kills off the Ambassador, threatens Ardougne publicly, and reveals its armies. Ardougne still refuses to take off the sanctions, and Varrock declares war.

How about that?

Or, another one:

Varrock was the first nation to master space flight and colonization, and the Varrockian Colonies cover fifteen moons of four planets. None of the other cities come even close to that number.

Ardougne is second-runner-up in colonies, with twelve moons and fourty-seven asteroids. Ardougne and Varrock have long since competed with each other for dominance in economics in the world, and relations between the two have grown gradually worse over the years. Most other countries either side with Ardougne or Varrock; as they are the two world powers.

Anyway Ardougne discovers that, by pushing people not only on top of the moons, but under them and in orbit around them too, they can get three times the amount of people and facilities into orbit and off of RuneScape. Drilling begins almost immediately, and thousands of new cities are created underground. Along the way, the Ardougne colonizers discover incredibly rare raw materials, and slowly but steadily push themselves into a world power position.

Varrock, which had been the dominant power for over seventy years, did not want to give up so easily. It began to search for new colonies, moons, and planets, and when they found none habitable, they turned to a last, desperate resort: invasion.

However, it was not the city of Varrock itself that gave the order. It was the armies of the colonies out in space. So, thousands of Varrockian soldiers invaded the Ardougne colonies, destroying many and making billions of gold pieces in damage.

Ardougne responds by destroying Draynor Village, a strong ally of Varrock. Enraged at the seeming invasion, Varrock declares all-out war on Ardougne and all of its allies.

Our two characters could escape an Ardougne space station before it was destroyed by Varrockian forces and join the Ardougne army in battle against Varrock.

Which one does suit you? Or a melding of all three?

A combo of all three could look like this:

Ardougne is suffering from over-population, and their colonies are not large nor numerous enough to hold the millions of extra people. Ardougne does not have the funding or the technology to steer istelf out of its dillema. Ardougne, the economic and scientific world power, seems to be grinding to a halt.

Meanwhile, Varrock is prosperous and wealthy, and spaced out well. It seems to be shifting into the world power position.

Seventy years pass. Varrock is by far the richest, most powerful country in the world. Ardougne is still fading, and everyone realizes that if something doesn't happen about the over-crowding, and fast, there would be four billion people without a home.

The current financial problem of Ardougne is the robots. At the time, everything was done by robots. They were efficient, strong, and long-lasting, but incredibly expensive and harder to build, considering the dwindling natural resources. So, with nothing to lost, they begin researching cybernetic cloning.

It is an amazing change. The new clones are grown in the millions. Whereas a robot would take half a year for all of its artificial DNA and cell structure to be computed, the clones take only two weeks to reach full size. They are smart, efficient, cheap, and enjoyable to work with, as they are human.

So, armed with billions of extra gold pieces, Ardougne tackles the main problem: overcrowding. They begin to drill into the surface of their colonies, planning to create subterranean cities where millions of people could live and work. They also turned to orbit, and began production of massive satellites that could hold approximately 3 million people each, comfortably and with parks, gardens, stores, factories, and more.

While drilling, Ardougne finds huge amounts of natural resources to make new things with.
