I probably break all the rules of musical 'grammar', because I don't know them. But I don't think a form of emotional expression can really have rules. You can say "This sounds better" but if you say "This is the right way to do it" that is a ridiculous way to set standards. Because it's 100% objective.
Lol I whistle all the time - have since I was a little boy. Don’t know why. But it drives some people crazy, haha. I don't do it in public so much anymore, but I guess you could say it’s a habit in my own house...*.x
I found your video's on YouTube. 'Unrequited Midi' reminded me somewhat of the music from Final Fantasy 7, lol. But that is a very good thing, I love that music. Your song is very full of emotion, and I thought it was excellent. The end was awesome, especially. Very unexpected shift to an almost spooky chord progression (and without losing the beauty of the earlier portions), but I loved it. ^^
I'm glad you're getting formal training in music, because it seems obvious to me that you're quite talented.

It is interesting that there are a high percentage of musicians on the story forums. Do you think interest in music goes hand in hand with interest in reading/writing?
I am writing a number of new stories, but I can't give away the plots by describing them to you. x.x
I have a few school based papers to write though, so the next few stories may be slower to completion. =p
Don't worry about the long reply, it's just conversation. Which is always a good thing. ^^

Mmm. Okay, that really changed speed quite a lot lol!
Modes don't usually come up in education until at quite an advanced stage because it is difficult, and most music use the set scales not modes. But modes were in use since 1100s and through time only a few modes are still popular today :) .
Having perfect pitch means you can do either of this:
1) If I ask you to sing a F-sharp, or any given note, you will be able to, and accurately.
2) If I play any note or notes on the piano, you will be able to tell by ear what notes were being played, and accurately.
I also have perfect pitch and it is extremely handy in music exams. It gives you an edge. But when it comes to Baroque pitch having perfect pitch can be a curse though >.<!
Classical music has, I think, a lot more subtlety than modern music - and these subtleties really carry across deep emotions, not just having to rely on swear words to convey disgust :P
Well, all songs have to start at some point. And transitional passages will come to you if you improvise more :)
Learning to read music isn't really that hard. But all the more important. If you're good at maths you'll be quite fine. Yes, that essay was horrid, and I got 54%. At least I passed and did not have to re-do the damn thing.
Haha! For my first few songs I *stitched* cool melodies I wrote down over 3 months in a particular order lol!
I mean, like writing, people break rules anyway, particularly old fashioned ones. Very few cares about consecutives/implied fifths and octaves anymore, and sometimes break them intentionally. The rule was invented because the music it produces sounds horrid - but what if the composer said it is intended to sound horrid? Can't argue about that then lol!
Well, unfortunately, no one taught me how to whistle. Or maybe I was so abysmal at it that they gave up teaching.

I've never played Final Fantasy 7 :P . The MIDI probably managed to drain all the emotion from it, but if I was playing it, the impression would be a cold, autumn evening, as a middle-aged man wrapped his coat around him, walking across the street, met with a mild wind that brought dead leaves on the ground rising up to meet him. Kinda :P
I think you'd do well with formal musical training too :)
Well, the scientific side of it is yet to be proven, but it is said that musicians, with the general discipline and understanding of maths, generally do better in Academic subjects, which may in turn lead to interests in reading, and writing, which is another expressive means. I tried composing before I started writing though lol.
Fine then! Keep the plots to yourself :P
P.S. Yes, some people do hate long replies O_o And glad you like conversations here because you're never in game!

Indeed. ^^ It’s a very good song though, in my opinion. =p
I guess I might learn about modes someday in college, then. But we’ll see. I may not pursue it that far lol.
Then people are wrong, I don’t have perfect pitch. If you sing a note or play it on piano, I can match it – but I couldn’t tell you what note it was. I might if I attempted to learn what different notes were what, but that’d take some time.
I agree whole-heartedly. Also, it’s become increasingly more important that people remind themselves somehow what real communication is, because language (not just English, but many languages) have been diluted so much by ‘modernism’ and other such sociological phenomena which were spawned in the rise industrial age.
Thanks. I’m still working on it – I just play them repeatedly until they’re stuck in my head, that way I wind up whistling them and eventually I’ll transpose that onto a guitar. I think I really need to play flute more, its prettier than whistling (and more accepted as a musical instrument, lol!). =]
Well, as far as math is concerned I can do algebra up to college level. But I started doing physics and calculus recently and I’m utterly failing lol…x.x But I’m confident I’ll be able to read music if I take the time to practice it. 54% sounds rough on your GPA – or is that relevant?
That’s cool. I watched all your song video’s on YouTube. My favorite is Consolation, because I can feel the emotion in it quite clearly. I’m surprised that you don’t have more views – you’re an excellent pianist.
Lol. Well peoples definition of ‘horrid’ is often different when it comes to music. I wrote a song for Halloween that has gotten a rather mixed response from my peers, because its style is very awkward and spooky, and it doesn’t stick to any musical norms.

But some people have said it was their favorite of my work so far. The subject of psychological responses to different musical styles is very in depth though, so I won’t delve into it here, even though it is quite interesting, lol.
I don’t know, whistling on pitch is just an acquired skill, I never really got ‘taught’ that I recall. You just have to try repeatedly until you figure it out. Unlike an instrument, it’s entirely of your own making, nobody can say “Hold your tongue like this” etc, because if they show you – you can*t see what they’re doing, lol…
I don’t think the MIDI drained the emotion. At least not all of it. I concede that any piece will sound better when played in person, or on a real instrument. But the composition holds its own type of communication as well. A good example of this is a series of songs which are supplemented by visuals. Look up “Animusic” on YouTube to see what I mean. ^^
That’s a very strange explanation. But I definitely catch the feel you were going for. ^^
I’ve only been playing guitar for a about two years. But I’ve been writing since I was a little boy. I can see how there could be some connection between imagination, literality, and musical ability. At least that they could have similar requirements on your neural pathways. =p
I am never in game. I only ever really played RuneScape to talk to friends. But that was many, many years ago, and most of my friends on there are gone. So I use the forums instead. =p

Yeah, all knowledge of modes will be forced upon you sooner or later :P
Well, recognising the correct note by hearing is perfect pitch, so long as you express you realise the pitch (reproducing it by guitar or singing) it is still perfect pitch :)
But a lot of people in music college don't have perfect pitch, so you could consider it a gift of a sort.
Ouch, don't mention the flute - I can't even play a note out of it! I used to play the viola, trumpet and recorder though.
Oh, your maths is fine. As long as you can do multiples and divisions. Well, Beethoven can't do multiplications, so...
Wow, you have the patience to watch ALL of it? O_o Gosh lol. I wrote Consolation in 2 days ^^ I broke the rule about parallel fifths a couple of times in it, and maybe it has more emotion because I played it and not computer :P . I don't get views because I am a cursed individual who just isn't meant to be popular :P
Well, about that Halloween piece - all pieces at some point received mixed reviews. So Beethoven at his time received many damned reviews asking him to write shorter pieces and make it less complicated. Nowadays no scholar dares to question Beethoven's supremacy :O
Yeah, that's why I hate it when I don't get what they're doing with their tongues at all lol...
As I said, it was not really scientific lol, but I guess both kinda uses the right side of the brain, kinda...
Personally, I used to no-life this game for absolutely no purpose, and then now I just talk to friends, all of whom I wouldn't have met if I didn't write at all O_o

That sounds painful. But I'm sure I'll learn to endure it if I'm willing to take those classes in college still after I've studied them a bit more, lol. You make it sound so gruesome. xD
I see. Then I might have it. Just an untrained version, I guess. This is one good reason for taking those ‘gruesome’ classes. *.x
Well, I want to get better at it. I love the tone it makes. Personally I find trumpet impossible, lol, so I guess we all win some and lose some. xD
It's not patience, it was good. O.o
I spend a lot of time listening to music while I'm working - mostly classical, which is undoubtedly your strong point. 2 days? That must've been inspired.
I think you should add more tags. At the moment its just "englishkid62" - and not many people are looking up your name on there. Add "classical Piano pieces", etc.
I guess you're right. It just interests me that so many people have such different ideas of what is 'right' and 'wrong' when it comes to music, and yet there are regular competitions in which a small portion of the audience (the judges) decide one piece over another. It seems like a flawed system. =p
I hope someday people think of me like they do Beethoven - but that is extremely unlikely, lol.
I no-lifed RS for a while too, admittedly, but that was because I have friends who played it regularly who didn't live close to me anymore. So it was kind of a substitute for 'hanging out'. =p

Well, we all probabl entered college thinking we know a lot about music and all sorts of scales, major, melodic and harmonic minor, octotonic and whole tone scale. But then modes come up, and there are 7 of them!
Actually, it sounds more complicated than it is :P
Perfect pitch in all shapes and sizes help no matter what. Although some freaks with extreme perfect pitch can tell all 10 notes in a cluster chord, or when a bus pass you by or a fire alarm goes off, they can tell you what note it was, or it was between G and A flat. :|
We here call these aural training Musicianship classes, and it is brain-frying sometimes :P
Yeah, flute is a nice instrument, but I just can't blow a note out of it lol. I dropped Trumpet like after a year, and picked up viola instead :)
Wow, you listen to music when you work? I can't work when I'm listening to music because my brain will be constantly fed information about instrumentation, harmonic progression and what notes were played, then I ended up listening to the music instead and stop working altogether lol. Heh, given the background story for the piece, I wouldn't have been surprised to be able to write it in 2 days lol.
More tags? Possibly, but atm I can sort of still choose what kind of people gets to see these videos and obviously if you don't know me from RS you wouldn't have seen it. But there are some good players out there and my performances will probably be fried.
Judges will inevitably have their biases, just like the Jagex mod for the Story competition!
If you get famous enough and leave behind only masterpieces in your lifetime, then maybe :)
Well, I have 0 social life, so I can no-life RS pretty efficiently anyway :P

x.x I don't even know that stuff, let alone modes, lol...
Cool. They can tell what note a bus passing is? That's insane. I bet their perspective on life is completely different from ours, if every noise has a musical tone...
I've never played a Viola, but I know why you dropped Trumpet lol.
It depends what I'm doing. I can't read very well with music on, but I do math no problem with it. In fact I do math a lot better if there is a steady classical tune in the background.
That's true. I've sat down and written whole songs in an afternoon before, but it's rarely like that. I guess it depends what you're feeling at the time - and how much time you have to spend on it in an afternoon, lol.
=p You're far better than the average pianist I would guess. I kind of understand for the sake of privacy, but if you want more people to see it then it needs more tags.
I've already written some songs that are definitely not masterpieces. But who knows - maybe people will think they are in 100-200 years? Lol...xD

Oh, you will have to learn them soon enough :P
Yes, and sometimes they'll tell me randomly that if a fire alarm sounded, it is in fact an E flat. I'm not like them in a sense that I'll have to intentionally try to work it out, while apparently they're automatically fed the information. Not every noise has a musical tone. Some notes are sort of in between and cannot be distinguished by the 12 tone system.
I just find the high notes of trumpet really hard and plus at the time I had braces...
I've never tried solving a Maths problem with music. But that's strange, because really I just enjoy the music instead, which is actually a far easier option than work!
Yeah, those times a rare. Nowadays I don't really compose any more until a piece really demands to be written down. I have no reason to write now. Before, I keep writing pieces dedicated to certain people - you get the image :P
Thanks for compliments! There are over critical people out there though who'll rate it 1 star! But then, as they say, "To avoid criticism, say nothing, do nothing, and be nothing."
I have written loads (in fact, probably all) of not-masterpieces. I know I won't appear on the history of music as anyone of significance, but hey, doesn't mean I can't post videos of myself playing, or enjoy music, right?
Maybe they will think so in 100-200 years, and think you're well ahead of your time and it is a pity that you were born so early!
