The World: Fragments of the Old Ream, The Graveyard (Optional)

A vast drop-off leads to an immense cavity miles upon miles wide. This place is appropriately named as it consists of ruined skyscrapers made of stone. Only the undead can reside here, as not even the fleshy growth can survive anywhere near here, simply rotting away as a slope of shrivelled-up meat within a mile of the Graveyard’s outskirts. Anything alive that ventures too close to the Graveyard will eventually become undead.

The Graveyard is a city of stone skyscrapers, paved highways, and concrete apartment buildings. It also has sewers, public baths and aqueducts, but instead of carrying water, flow with blood. The inhabitants are either undead or mechanical, or something in-between.

Very little is known about the Graveyard, as most are too afraid to even think of coming here. Most of it consists of ruins, though the citizens have been repairing the city over time. The Graveyard is one of the oldest places in the world, as the mechanical beings here are often heavily rusted and almost falling apart.

The World: The Cathedral of Suffering (Optional)

A gateway to a hellish realm, consisting of a single city-sized Gothic cathedral so huge that its top actually disappears into the hazy sky. This gargantuan cathedral is made of jagged black metal, and is, apparently, floating in the sky. It's base consists of innumerable chains that hang down, touching the fleshy ground below. The chains are constantly jingling against each other.

The only way to enter this cathedral is if you can either fly to it, or climb the chains. Unfortunately, the chains are constantly moving up and down, and are covered with blades and spikes, so it’d be a difficult climb, made all the worse that the chains are covered with leaking blood. The cathedral can move around by "walking" with these chains.

Inside the Cathedral of Suffering, humans, demons, monsters, Elves, and anyone else, begin self-mutilation. They bite, cut, peel, and rip off their own skin, eyelids, lips, cheeks, ears, and hair, and then hurl themselves into baths of red-hot coals, or plunge themselves into boiling oil, to feel extreme pain.

Other self-inflicted tortures are ripping out their own teeth and nailing bits of metal into their gums, biting chunks of flesh out themselves, stabbing themselves with red-hot irons, ripping off their own body parts with red-hot grapples, pulling apart their own muscles and tissue, pulling on their hanging tendons, disemboweling themselves and eating their own guts, connecting themselves to machinery to be torn asunder, and even sawing through themselves.

How they do not die is a mystery, but within the Cathedral of Suffering, death does not exist, and those who torture themselves have regenerating bodies; their bodies regrow and they will continue to self-inflict hideous injuries unto themselves. Victims also exhibit planting new body parts into themselves, such as wings or extra limbs.

The Cathedral of Suffering does not have an owner, or even a group of people controlling it in any way, and it simply seems to be a non-sentient floating mechanical building that somehow causes anything that goes into itself to relentlessly begin self-mutilation.

But the Cathedral of Suffering has a more sadistic purpose, for those inside will eventually start bolting or riveting armour into their own bones, muscles and tendons, and then leave the cathedral to incapacitate any living thing, humans and monsters alike. They also ram blades, hooks, or spikes into their arms and feet, to make themselves mobile weapons.

Victims incapacitated by the previous victims are tied onto the bladed chains below the cathedral, and are ascended up into it, and become mindless individuals that suddenly start self-mutilation. This process keeps repeating until all living things are absorbed by the strange addiction.

The World: placeholder text (Optional)

Create your own location or environment; it can be part of the Old Realm, a far-off land, an island in an ocean of blood, a place isolated from the evils and not possessing any sign of them, a floating city, a giant ship, a beautiful world, Atlantis, a parallel universe, an otherworldly dimension, a flotilla of zeppelins, an underwater city, or anything else that you’d like.

Created environments like this become part of the thread, and can be involved in role-play, scenarios or short stories. If you would like to simply start by creating a new location rather than a bio, start the post with “The World:” and then name the location after the :, and then describe the environment or area. You may then create a bio for that environment later on. Created environments will be listed in the index.

Notable races (Optional)

Demon / Devil
Usually malevolent otherworldly beings, generally resembling bipedal dragons, but vary greatly. If dead or killed, a demon’s soul continues to exist and can haunt or possess bodies, dead or alive, in a fit of revenge or anger. As such, demons are very dangerous beings to deal with, but demons in their spiritual form can be defeated or purified by holiness or sacred relics.

Demons in their spiritual form can teleport to people who know about them, as memory is their conduit for traversing through the world to any character.

Fallen angel
An angel cast out of heaven for disobedience or as punishment for some sin. They are potentially good and evil, or neutral, or even nihilistic. Like demons, they are immortal and have eternal souls. If dead or killed, their spiritual form can continue to interact with the physical world, however souls of angels cannot possess bodies. Instead, they may become guardian angels or vengeful spirits.

Mechanical
Mechanical beings are a mix of flesh and machines, organic bodies growing and merging into mechanical bodies, and come in a few kinds, described below. Mechanical beings have mechanical, mechanized and/or metal parts connected to their nervous system, muscles, bones and tendons. Mechanical beings can also become undead, and some demons also have bodily structures or armour reminiscent of mechanical beings. Simply put, a mechanical being is any living thing that is growing or merging into a mechanical frame.

Edged weapons such as swords, axes and glaives are not very useful against mechanical beings. Maces, sledgehammers, clubs, war hammers and poleaxes are the best weapons against them. Hammers can bend their frames, whereas flukes or spikes can puncture them.

They also easily sink, overheat and freeze, making them vulnerable to the natural elements, magic, and flammable liquids hurled onto them. Skinny blades can also be used to slip into the gaps, openings and joints of their exteriors to pierce the eye, heart, lungs or organs, of which they will die faster than humans would.

Human Machine
Essentially a human with an interior consisting of mechanical parts, connecting to organs, bones, muscles and tendons. They possess great strength, glass eyes, gesso-like skin, and are usually emotionless. They keep aging until they fall apart.

Warrior types usually wear sophisticated mechanical armour that has moving parts, which can reform into various appendages. The armour also acts as a weapon-shaping construct, but the weight means that the wearer will easily sink, freeze and overheat.
Human Machines are potentially the toughest of all mechanical beings due to having a mechanical exterior and interior.

Armoured Machine
A being encased with a powerful mechanical exterior, but possessing a soft interior, essentially a squishy creature covered with thick mechanical armour. Their armour is connected to their nervous system, tendons, skeleton and muscles like other Mechanicals.

They are usually quite huge, often over seven feet tall and weighing in at over four hundred pounds, making them powerful and virtually invulnerable, but slow and unable swim. They quickly freeze and overheat, and are easily blinded by bright lights.

They vary greatly in appearance, and can be anything from human-shaped to insect-like. They are virtually immortal, but the older they get, the more likely they will fall apart and die. They are likely to take more damage when falling from great heights. If taken off their feet, it is difficult for them to get back up; someone could simply sit on a fallen Armoured Machine and the extra weight would prevent him or her from getting back up.

Hacker
About three feet long and just an inch thick, having a segmented serpentine body. It has long thin legs like a spider at its middle, and its segmented body can unfold to release many tiny wires. This nasty critter can wriggle inside another mechanical being, infusing itself and its wires into its host’s skeleton and nervous system, and control it, hence its name. It can also writhe its way into a living person, but that would just result in an agonizing death of the host. Like other mechanical beings, they are prone to overheating and freezing.

Automaton
A being made entirely of machinery or metal parts, empowered by a soul, spirit, demon or poltergeist, or controlled by a sorcerer or engineer. Very difficult to defeat, especially when constructed out of thick parts.

Fleshy monster / *naedonaia (singular Enaedonai; *naedonaia, with an 'a' at the end, is plural, *=E)
Resembling golems made of meat. They do not have skin, eye sockets, cheeks, ears or lips, so their teeth and gums are always visible. They have curved bones that act as claws at their hands and feet. Some wear a mechanical exterior that can reform into appendages similarly to Human Machines.

Flesh beast
Monsters that greatly vary, essentially consisting of various body parts, organs or bones, in the style of body horror. Very difficult to kill.
For an easy example, go on YouTube, and copy-paste the line below into the YouTube search bar, search, and then click on the according video.
Chest Defibrillation - The Thing (5/10) Movie CLIP (1982) HD

Simply put, flesh beasts are similar to monsters that you can see in games like Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and Dead Space, or similar to monsters seen in films such as The Thing, The Resurrected, or From Beyond; such a style is generally called "body horror". You can search scenes from these games and films on YouTube, too, if you'd like a better idea, so long as you don't mind bizarre Lovecraftian imagery.

Bio format (Optional)

(it is a good idea to copy-paste the two bio-posts onto Word and finish it there, and then post them in this thread)

(Note that you can add or remove sections, too. If a section does not apply to your character, you can just leave it blank, put down “None” or simply delete the section. Technology should not exceed the nineteenth century but feel free to include steampunk elements.)

Name:

Race: (you can use any race already described, use a race not described, or create your own; note that if you create your own race you may need to use extra descriptions)

Gender:

Height:

Build: (normal, lean, muscular, skinny, chubby, etc.)

Dead or alive: (undead or living)

Form: (spiritual or physical; note that bodiless characters are flexible in that they can go anywhere)

Appearance and features: (how your character looks like, excluding armour and equipment; if a non-human character be sure to include claws, wings, horns, tail, or anything else if applicable, as well as scars, tattoos, skin color, etc.)

Weapon(s): (anything that can inflict harm, such as a sword, flintlock pistol, mechanized pivoting blade part of a mechanical suit, natural weapons such as claws or horns, etc.)

Armour and clothing:

Equipment:

Strengths:

Weaknesses:

Psychology:

Other: (anything else you feel is important to note)

Background: (what your character is, such as class; any character of any race can be any class)

History: (the backstory to your character; can also be left as unknown or secretive)

Quest: (what your character wants to do)

Can be MIA: (yes or no; in case you are absent and your character is involved in something important, such as a fight scene, can your character be presumed missing in action for roleplaying to continue until you are available? You will have to explain what happened later, such as character was dragged away by monsters, lost consciousness, froze, possessed, etc.)

Can be killed: (yes: anyone can kill, no: only user can kill, permission: can only kill with permission from creator)

Can be resurrected: (yes, no or your choice on who can resurrect dead bio if is killed through either you or someone else; remember that a character’s corpse can be reanimated by a spiritual demon, fallen angel, necromancer, or simply awakens as an undead)

Can self-resurrect: (yes or no; if yes, your character can awaken as an undead; undead characters can only regain their life over time or by absorbing the soul of something. Undead characters have limited magical abilities)

Retinue: (minor or nameless followers if applicable; anyone can kill them but not within a single post)

Company: (if applicable, minor members your character is part of, such as a regiment, free company, group; anyone can kill them but not within a single post)

Location: (where your character and possibly others are currently at or nearby; if you created a location, you may put it here, and default locations are listed below)

The Surface (generic area)

The Flesh Dungeons (underground fleshy passages)

The Flesh Forest (place with oversized organs and bones growing out of the flesh-ground)

The Mechanical Citadels (exterior or interior) (the towers made of machines that can be controlled by the inhabitants)

The Seas, Lakes and Rivers of Blood

Yggdrasil Mountain (the mountain with the giant face-glowing tree)

The Dwarven Mines (subterranean passages)

The Graveyard (undead ruins of stone skyscrapers; this area transforms the living into undead)

The Cathedral of Suffering (exterior or interior) (the floating cathedral)

(or type down your created location/environment)

As asked by TwelveGage, you may instead use a non-bio, which as suggested is a story-like introduction of a character or setting rather than following a prompt.

Rules and guidelines

Basic roleplaying rules apply here; just be considerate towards other people and their ideas. Be sure to carefully read a bio's details prior to engaging that bio in PvP if it happens; don't overpower another bio within a single post.

Generally, when posting non-thread storytelling, put your message within two brackets. So it'd be like (( *your non-story message goes here* )) but it's optional; I won't get mad if you forget to put the brackets in. :)

If you are posting a short story, be sure to include a title at the top.

Feel free to create your own locations/environments simply to destroy them.

I want to create a world with opportunities for defeats and triumphs; remember that this is a nightmarish world and all characters should endure some suffering and conflict. This will create struggle and hopefully make the story more realistic, dynamic and relatable.

You can create as many new locations, stories and bios/characters as you want.

If you wish to create a scenario or event for other bios by other users, be sure to discuss about it first with them. Feel free to create scenarios or events for your own bios/locations/short stories.

All submissions are copyrighted by their respective owners. All rights reserved.

Other info

If you don't want to participate in roleplaying or creating bios or characters, but instead would like to submit a short story or story based on this thread, you can do that, too. Submitted stories should have a title as the first thing in the post. I will read and review the story for you. Other users are also welcome to review or comment on any submitted work.
