—— WHERE DO I BEGIN? ——
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Every good story starts with a basic idea. What do you want to explore in your writing? What concept does your piece examine? "The Hobbit" by Tolkien discusses the grand and sucessful adventure of a tiny, powerless hobbit. While this story contains a lot of information, it can't be written without a starting point. No one can tell you what to write about, because everyone has their own unique interests. To start writing, you need a basic idea, which could be anything from an invasion by an evil army to the meaning of life itself. This is yours to choose.

In short, begin with an idea to serve as your story's foundation.

—— YOUR MAIN CHARACTER ——
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Characters are an important part of most stories because a reader needs someone he or she can relate to. Most stories have a main character (often called a protagonist) whom the story centers around. In "The Hobbit" this character is Bilbo. In Shakespare's Macbeth, this character is... well... Marcbeth. To create this kind of rich character, you will need to do a great deal of thinking. What characteristics does this person have?

Any good character has:
- Both positive and negative traits.
- A distinct appearance (even if it's distinctly ordinary, like Douglas Adam's Arthur Dent)
- A believable personality.
- Plausible motives.

And remember: characters don't always have to stay the same. One of the most important elements of many stories is the main character's own, personal development.

—— DEVISING A PLOT ——
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Most works have a plot (or story) in some form. In the hobbit, the plot centers around Bilbo's journey. In Macbeth, the plot concern's Macbeth's rise and fall from the throne. The plot is literally a story's backbone: the framework which holds it together and defines its narrative. To craft a plot, you need to develop your story's basic idea into a timeline of sorts. Sure, Bilbo is going to go on a journey to fight a dragon, but how will he get there? What will happen next? Who will win? Again, the primary way to think of a plot is to give it a lot of thought. A notebook is handy for this, because you can spend all day playing out your story's scenario and if something sticks then you can write it down. You don't have to design your plot from beginning to end at a single time, or even before you start writing. However, this will allow you to plan out your tale effectively.

—— HOOKING THE READER ——
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Every good story begins with a good hook. Imagine yourself as a fisherman attempting to reel in a reader. If someone is still deciding whether they want to read your story, the first paragraph is very important. Is everything spelled right? Is it suspenseful? Does it grab the reader's attention? Even the first sentence needs to have these qualities. The beginning odf any story must leave the reader wondering what will happen next, and on the edge of his seat with tension over this question.

A hook must also be maintained. Plots are usually made up of many different threads. One could be the adventure, and another a side romance. One could be a conflict between two characters which needs resolving, and another could be a character's own personal development. If you cut all of these threads at once a reader may loose interest before you can open up news ones, so make sure to keep the reader interested!

—— RELATING TO CHARACTERS ——
by Mod Scorpion

If your characters are experiencing situations which are not normal, e.g. in a fantasy story, it is very important that you can still understand why the characters are reacting as they do. So, even if the characters are not behaving in a way which the reader would act, there is reasoning behind it so the reader can empathise with them.

—— BELIEVABLE MOTIVES ——
by Mod Scorpion

A simple way of determining these is to ask questions of your characters. Who are they? Where do they come from? What do they want? If the reader can answer these questions clearly, then the character’s motives regarding what is unfolding around them will be much clearer. Conflicting character motives is also a great way of encouraging people to read on and find out what happens next.
