Fine, I'll post what I have. Just to prove I've been writing.
I just wanted the whole complete part at once, but I haven't gotten around to finishing it. Whatever. I'll finish this specific scene, then post it. It's only like 5 pages in Word, not that much...

“Dearest Justine,
It is a most wonderful thing to be alive! I truly did not believe I would see another day. It certainly looked back for a while. I hope you weren’t too worried, though. I imagine you will receive all of my letters at the same time, so at least you won’t have had to worry for very long!
The battle was most terribly long and brutal. I will not trouble you with the details, it is not fit for your delicate ears, love…but I must confess something. I thought I had made some friends here – I a man named Martin, and another named Gavin. Martin was looking out for me in the battle, you see, since he was in my squad.
He saved my life. A man was about to kill me, and Martin fought him off. And then the Kandarin killed Martin. It was my fault, Justine, because I am not a good enough fighter to protect myself! This will be my burden, now * I will never forget what he did for me. I fear your father was right, that I am not man enough to fight in this war. I will do my best to learn, now. A good man died because I was too weak to save myself. And then, when I saw Gavin – I had not heart to tell him what happened, that his friend, his brother, was gone because of me. I am truly a coward. He found out soon enough. And now I am alone again. I made a most terrible mistake. The shame*It’s unbearable. I wish I could hold you, have you tell me it’s not my fault. Well, I suppose that would be bad – it is my fault, after all. But it would help all the same. I need you so much.
I will go to Port Sarim soon, and hopefully I will find letters from you waiting for me at the garrison there. This waiting, this hoping, reminds me of the game we used to play after your father forbid me to see you, after he caught us that one time. Do you remember how we would leave letters for each other?

"I would pay the maid to leave them hidden under your pillow, and you would hide them in the castle gardens amongst the roses for me. My father wondered why I was suddenly taking so many walks, at all hours of the day!
I miss you so much, Justine. I am going away on a mission now * they have divided us up, you see * and most likely I won’t be able to write many more letters, or mail them, at least. But I will be back soon enough, and perhaps we will be home not long after. I pray this war will end soon, if only so I could see you again.
I cannot wait to read your letters. You must tell me everything that is going on at the castle. I miss the city. I miss *you*.
With all my love,
Lucas”

The streets of Varrock gave no hint of a country at war. The people crowded the streets despite the summer heat, going on about their daily business as though nothing was wrong. The aroma of cooking food charged out of bakeries into the sidewalk, combating the stench of sweaty, massed people. They jostled against each other, battling for space, chattering boisterously. Justine wandered the uneven cobblestones, gritting her teeth as she was bumped from behind by two women laughing at some personal joke. How could they pretend that life just went on? Surely some of them were mothers, or wives, whose loved ones were away alongside Lucas? How did they move on, or forget? Justine ducked into the welcome shade of a shop, scrubbing a hand across her brow.
She stood for a moment in the darkness, savoring the surge of coolness through her body. Eyes shut, she inhaled deeply, aware of a variety of scents mingling in the air around her. Opening her eyes, she wondered to herself what kind of place she had entered. Herbs – mint, cinnamon, rosemary, and others she couldn’t identify, all mixed with the musky sent of dust, which she could see swirling through the air in shafts of light slanting through the round window high on the wall.
“Can I help you, miss?”
Justine turned away from the window, smiling pleasantly. “What is this place?” she asked softly, in wonder. Now her eyes had adjusted, and she could see the long rows of shelves along the walls, lined with various jars and boxes. There were long sprigs of flowers laid out, or piles of smaller herbs, and on the counter towards the center of the small room was a set of scales.
The woman before her was surprisingly young – she was older than Justine, but there were no wrinkles on her tan cheeks, nor gray in her dark brown curls. She wore a simple homespun dress with an apron over it, which looked to be splashed with all kinds of unidentifiable substances.

The woman approached Justine, coming around the counter. “An apothecary’s shop. I take it you weren’t looking for us, then?”
“I needed to get off the street,” Justine explained, slightly embarrassed. *It’s just – so crowded, and they all just – I had to get away,” she stammered finally. “Ah, beg pardon, but what exactly do you – sell?” When the woman raised an eyebrow, she added hastily, “It’s just – when I think of an apothecary, I think of, well –“
“A witch?” the woman supplied, as Justine hesitated again. The young woman’* cheeks flushed dark red in answer. The woman laughed. “Spells, potions, and the like? Not quite. This is actually my husband’s shop, but he deals in medicine, and healing. He is a physician.”
Justine nodded. “While I’m here…would you happen to have anything for headaches?”
“Of course! Please, sit, I’ll fix something up for you.” She ushered Justine around to behind the counter, where there was a small table with two chairs set around it. Justine settled in one of them, and took advantage of the opportunity to look around some more. There were no jars with strange substances in them now, she saw; all were labeled, for one thing, and the labels recognizable. There was chamomile, there was the cinnamon she had seen…
“I realized I haven’t introduced myself. I apologize. My name is Mirienne Adams. And you are?”
“Justine Val’Myren.”
She heard an sharp intake of breath; the woman must have recognized her name. “My lady!” Mirienne exclaimed. “I did not realize –“
“Please, it’s fine. Just Justine, if you will.”
Mirienne bobbed her head as she came back into Justine’s view, sliding into the other chair and laying a small packet before Justine, but leaving her hand on top of it to prevent Justine from taking it. “Justine, then. Can you describe the headaches for me?”

“Every day…they start about midday, and they never really go away. Sometimes it’s hard for me to sleep. It’s like a pounding, all through my head.”
“How long?”
Justine thought back to when Lucas had left. They had begun not long after he’d left. “About two months.”
Mirienne nodded, as if confirming something to herself. “This is a packet of peppermint leaves. Boil one to three leaves into a tea, depending on the strength of the headache. Peppermint oil works wonders on headaches. However…this can cure them only in the short term. It will make the pain go away, however, it cannot stop the source. As much as I would love the increased business, you can’t do this every day without end. Is there a reason you have been getting these headaches, that you know of?” Justine stared at her hands, twisting them in her lap, and Mirienne tried to catch her eye. “You can talk to me, Justine. I promise. Maybe I can help more.”
“It’s just –“ she broke off, sighing. She couldn’t pour her heart out to a total stranger. But she was so completely alone in this world without Lucas, and she desperately needed a friend. “My fiancée – his name is Lucas – he went off to the war.”
Mirienne fell back in her chair, with a knowing, rueful smile. “I know the feeling, my dear. Unfortunately, that’s where my husband is as well.”
“How are you so calm about it?” Justine blurted out.
The older woman shrugged. “I’m not,* she admitted. “This place is his, not mine. I know about his work, he taught me how to run this shop in his absence, but it*s his. Do you know what I mean? I associate these smells with him. To be in here daily, among his things, among all the things that he loves, it breaks my heart. Every day, every second. This place just smells like *him*.”

Justine was blinking back tears. “Lucas was a servant at the castle. I spent all my time there with him, especially in the gardens. I can’t walk through there without feeling his presence – and yet I cannot stay in my home, and I cannot escape into the city!” She flung a hand toward the door, encompassing the masses swarming outside. “They act like nothing’s wrong! They act like life just goes on, like there’s no war, like men aren’t dying for reasons they don’t even understand…” she finally broke down, sobbing, and suddenly strong arms were supporting her, wrapping around her, and a voice whispered soothing things in her ear, like the mother she had never known.
It was getting dark when Justine finally left the shop, and the sweltering heat had begun to fade. The streets were quieter now, as most patrons had gone home with the sunset. Justine wandered slowly through the twilight, arms wrapped tightly around herself, deep in thought. To her delight, her headache had faded, and she hadn’t even taken any of the medicine. For the first time in a long time, pain-free, breathing deeply of the crisp night air, she could truly think clearly. It felt as though for the past few months she had been walking around in a daze.
Just to be able to speak about Lucas, to be able to express all of her frustrations…she had internalized everything she was feeling, bottled it up inside to try and hide from it, until it finally overwhelmed her. But now, it felt like she had a friend, someone she could confide in. She could let herself feel again! True, she still felt that ache in her chest whenever she thought of Lucas, but it hurt a little less when she knew she wasn’t alone anymore.
For the first time, also, she felt peaceful. She was not overcome by memories; his face did not materialize in every shadow, as it usually did. She felt free, alive, incredibly lighthearted, like a weight had been lifted.

She wandered aimlessly down the street, humming to herself, in no rush at all, and it was in this state that a horse trotted up beside her, and a silky voice drawled, “Why hello, Justine!”
She looked up in surprise. “My Lord!”
“Please. My name is James.” He reined in the prancing horse and slid smoothly from the saddle to walk beside her. “It is late for a woman to be walking alone, especially in this part of town.”
“I am not afraid.”
“Perhaps you should be,” he said harshly, then, more softly, “I wouldn’* want anything to happen to you.”
“Well, thank you,” she replied, with a smile. “I guess it’s good I have you to escort me home, then.” She glanced, and saw his lips curve upwards. He was stunningly handsome when he grinned like that. How had she never noticed?
They walked in silence for a while. Justine was unsure of what to say to him – how did one strike up conversation with a Prince? She felt on edge, conscious of her every move, and she was aware of his constant, furtive looks in her direction.
“Have you heard anything about the war effort?” she blurted out finally.
He tilted his head as he looked at her. “Some,” he admitted. “But why would a young woman like you take interest in that?”
Her cheeks flushed bright red and she faltered. “I…” she stammered. Words had deserted her momentarily, and she did*’t know how to answer him. “I was just curious, My Lord. I hope we are stopping the Kandarin invasion.”
Prince James smiled indulgently and swelled with pride. “I believe we are. My father put me in charge of the war. So far it’s going well, although truth be told, not a lot has happened yet.”
“Have there been any big battles?”
“A few, but I really don’t believe that’s something you should worry about. It*s not information for a nice young lady like yourself.”
She bowed her head. “Of course not,* she conceded. “You are right.”

Inside, her gut was churning, and her head had begun to pound again. Her face felt strangely numb, like she couldn’t move her lips. She had tried to say Lucas’ name, but somehow the words could not come out. There had always been an unspoken agreement that their relationship, while not entirely secret, could not be entirely public, either. Once her father had realized that he could not keep her and Lucas apart, he had pulled her aside and told her in no uncertain terms that she must keep it quiet. Justine herself was not ashamed of Lucas, but to protect her father’s prestigious station, she had obliged. Now that he had become a soldier – that was more respectable, and she had never openly denied that she had a fiancée she was madly in love with. But somehow…she hadn’t wanted the Prince to know. She had blatantly lied about Lucas for the first time, and it made her feel sick.
“Is everything all right?”
She jerked her head up, realizing she had been silent for a long time. “Yes, thank you. I was just thinking.”
James studied the sky thoughtfully, and she followed his gaze. The pink hues of sunset had faded to navy blue, and she could see the first star high above. “It’s very late,” he mused. “You should be home. Will you ride with me?”
Justine stumbled slightly on the uneven cobblestones, and he grabbed her arm to steady her. His palms were warm and slightly sweaty on her skin, and she looked up to meet his burning gaze. One could not refuse such an offer from the Prince, and she agreed in a shaky, weak voice. Immediately he looped his large hands around her waist and swung her easily into the saddle, then climbed up behind her. His arms slid around her middle to reach for the reins, and his chest pressed tightly against her back.
