“Hey, it looks like Joran actually remembered what to do!” Kaz shouted excitedly. Arial, seemingly surprised as well, agreed. Looking at the chaos below, he couldn’t help but feel glad that Joran came through, but at the same time he also couldn’t see anything in the crowd. Not only were Ordinators fighting against Joran and his ex military and drinking friends, they also had to contend with the people who started to panic and flee the minute all of the guards in the area decided to run into the fray with swinging swords, and the yaks somehow got loose, stranding the platform in the middle of the plaza entrance.

“Crap, this isn’t good.” Arial said. Kaz looked at him with a confused look on her face. “Why?
” she asked. “He did what you said, and from the looks of things it worked.”

“True, but they were supposed to be away from Nhur by now. Doesn’t that idiot realize if he wins, that only invites the Mahjarrat to kill him anyway as ‘justice’?”

“I suppose you’re right. Luckily for you, I have an idea.”

“Kaz, don’t do it. The last thing we need is for our cover to be blown.” Arial replied.

However, he was too late. By the time he finished his sentence, Kaz had already finished a spell that sent a streak of lightning into the middle of Joran’s distraction.

“Come on, vhat ze hell is taking so long?” Rahj howled in frustration. He’d been stuck waiting for hours on end, and it seemed that nobody had the brains to give the damn signal that he was told to wait for despite the fact that nearly everyone was busy either running away or just busy punching someone in the face for the hell of it.

Just as he was about to call it quits and get out of there, the Rakshasa noticed a faint glow from the statue that spewed forth a stream of lightning that seemed to hit everyone in the immediate area of the emperor’s platform.

“Finally!” he cried. Taking that as the signal, Rajh aimed at Nhur’s head before he loosed his bolt.

“Dammit Kaz, what the hell was that about?!” Arial screamed. Kaz, apparently drained after her display of power, slumped to the ground before deciding to prop herself up with an elbow.

“You were complaining about the fight not being away from Nhur,” she replied. “So I fixed your problem. Feel free to thank me anytime now."

"Well-” Before Arial could contest the results of her spell, a loud boom, followed by the sound of hushed gasps from everyone in the area, resounded from the south. Turning to see what happened, he noticed that Nhur now had a green shielding around him...

...which was also holding a crossbow bolt in midair, which clattered helplessly to the ground as Nhur dispelled his protection.

A loud ringing filled his head, and before he could do anything to stop it Rajh was raging into his ear. “A spell shield? Koshir, you didn't tell me ze damn target had a spell shield! Zis vhasn’t part of ze deal.”

“Calm down Rajh,” he replied. “You did fine. Let me handle this from here, then we’ll talk about your pay.” Kaz, noticing him in deep concentration, gestured towards the direction Nhur was in.

“Go,” she panted. “I’ll be with you as soon as I can stand up.”

Arial nodded, and then walked towards the edge of their hiding place. Apparently the attempted assassination scared most of the normal people out of the area, with only Joran and his friends mixing it up with the Ordinators that decided he was a bigger priority than a few scared citizens.

He untied his cloak and let it drop to the ground to reveal his old armor-a full plate suit made of a mysterious metal that gave it a red tint despite the fact that the shadows surrounding it made the suit look black at a glance-and proceeded to jump into the crowd below.

If Nhur was stunned, he didn't let it show. Recounting the events that eventually led to someone trying to put a bolt through him, he wasn’t surprised in the slightest, as he had expected that eventuality the minute the Shade known as Joran was spotted in the crowd by his bodyguards.

What he didn't expect was seeing a figure drop from the hippogriff statue and start making its way through the chaos that was happening in the streets. Keeping an eye on the newcomer in the crowd, Nhur turned his attention towards Joran to see how the Ordinators were faring. It didn't look good for them, as he now noticed that Joran had somehow managed to conjure up a ball of light in each of his fists and was using them to blind the guards while dispelling some of the protective magic that was naturally present in the Ordinator armor at the same time.

A voice rang over the noise, catching his immediate attention as the noise died down since the people in the crowd-Ordinator, Rebel, and citizen alike- wanted to hear the newcomer’s words. “Nhur! This ends now!”

He turned to see a pale man with brown hair standing before him dressed in a somewhat red plate suit, and holding two crackling light blue swords that he must have conjured by some sort of spell that was unknown to the Mahjarrat. He now realized the full extent of what was happening: the ex-general had shown himself at last, and on the day of his ascendance to the throne, no less.

Meeting his gaze, Arial spoke, his voice rising far above the commotion so the bystanders that were remaining heard his every word. “Nhur, you stand accused of treason against the throne, along with trafficking with demons and other foul spawn in order to kill the true emperor and take the throne for your own selfish purposes. How do you plead?”

A wicked smile crossed Nhur’s shade-like features. “Not guilty, my dear ex-general. I deny your accusations and in turn accuse you of attempted assassination against the rightful heir to the throne, as decreed by the late Emperor Ix himself. How do *you* plead?”

~^+^~

Rajh felt movement beneath him. Looking down, he noticed that the gargoyle he was on had finally woken up. Trying his best to hold onto the creature as it stood up and stretched its wings, his hands slipped, and as he fell his claws ended up scratching and irritating the beast. It swatted him aside before looking down and noticing that the Koshir and the faux emperor were now facing each other down. With a malicious gleam in its eyes, it took flight towards the two.

He only had enough time to quickly work the contact spell that everyone in the rebellion was taught and shout a quick mental warning.

~^+^~

Arial froze at Nhur’s words. He expected the Mahjarrat to deny any accusations against him, but he was still surprised that the creature dared to accuse him back in retaliation.

The ringing came back into his head once more. “Koshir, look out!” He never heard the beating of wings as something swooped down and crashed right into him.

~^+^~

Rajh looked on helplessly as the gargoyle collided with the Koshir. He knew that gargoyles were fierce and overwhelming opponents because of their territorial nature, and as a result were far beyond the Rakshasa’s capabilities to fight. Backing up, he bumped into someone. “That’s as far as you go,” a voice said. Turning around, Rajh came face to face with an Ordinator.

“Ah, karrish,” he muttered. “Zis is not my day.” Rajh turned around to face the edge, and noticed that the gargoyle had disappeared and a human-like figure with bat wings had taken its place on the platform…..and he also noticed a line with lantern decorations connecting to a stall on the ground across the plaza.

“Ah, Rajh, you roshii cat,” he said to himself. “Maybe things be looking up instead.” Turning to the Ordinator, he did a mocking bow. “Forgive my rudeness, but zere’s ze small matter of ze bolt I vas paid to put in a head.”

He unsheathed his lucky dagger that he always kept in his left boot, gripped the side of the blade in his off hand, and then started to slide down the line on the flat edge while taking some hits for the team. Courtesy of the lanterns, of course.

~^+^~

Arial’s vision cleared, and he laid his eyes on his attacker after he untangled himself from what hit him and collecting his swords. A man, his black hair made into dreadlocks that came down to his shoulders, stood before him dressed in a dragonskin trench coat that was unbuttoned, showing well developed muscles that looked honed after years of martial training. He also had big bat wings seemingly popping out of the coat somehow, and also wore flared pants and sandals.

“Erevin,” he said. “You’d side with him after what happened?”

The man laughed, showing two pointed teeth in the process. “Oh, general,” Erevin replied. “We may have been working together, but you of all people should know that my kind is bound by our word. I swore to serve the emperor, and, well,” he gestured towards Nhur, “here he is. Lovely, isn’t he?”

“Traitor! I’ll have your head for this!” Arial shouted. As he drew one of his cerulean blades back to strike, Erevin took to the air and charged straight at him. He dropped to the ground, and brought the blade in his off hand up in a strike that drew blood straight from Erevin’s chest.

“You….you drew first blood? From me?” Erevin asked in a surprised tone. His features hardened as he locked his gaze on Arial. “Now it’s my turn. Taste vengeance!”

A purple hue washed over Erevin’s chest before disappearing completely. Arial felt pain as he’d never felt it before. Clutching his head, he kneeled on the ground, seeing only a skull in his vision. However, it ended as quickly as it came.

A female voice shot back, “Now feel mine!” Lightning engulfed Erevin, leaving him screaming in pain as he rolled on the ground. Looking up, Arial saw Kaz making her way onto the float, smiling. “Told ya I’d be here!” She said.

Erevin stood up and brushed himself off, looking at the newcomer that managed to put him in more pain than a single blade ever could. “I suppose we’ll finish this later,” he snarled at Arial. “When your Fade Witch isn’t around to bail you out.” Turning to Nhur, he added, “I always settle my scores. *Always*.”

Tensing up, Erevin’s features blurred slightly, eventually stretching and contorting into the form of a gargoyle. A flick of his enormous wings lifted him off of the ground, and carried him off into the night sky. Nhur clapped slowly, as if he was mocking both Arial and Kaz.

“Good show, general. Now unfortunately, since you haven’t answered my query, I assume you’re guilty and thus sentence you to death.”

~^+^~

Joran saw everything despite the fact that he was fighting a handful of Ordinators at the time it happened. As Erevin flew away, he turned his attention back to the current threat, which was a hapless guard that he was grappling with shortly before Arial publicly accused Nhur and lost. The Ordinator, still stunned from what just happened, didn't put up a fight as Joran drove a fist into his helmet, thus ending the conflict.

Turning to see how his bar buddies were faring, he was glad to see that they currently outnumbered the enemy. Whistling to catch their attention, he nodded his head towards Nhur’s platform. They understood and nodded before turning back to the current beating they were giving the guards that were still in one piece after the lightning blast. He figured if Arial was going to go toe to toe with Nhur at last, he might as well be there for the show.

As Joran made his way to Nhur’s platform, he noticed a tiger barreling through the crowd, tossing anyone that got in its way around with reckless abandon. It came to a screeching halt in front of him, scattering pebbles and other random debris from the street in a cloud of dust as it finally stopped. Its form shifted, with the fur shortening to reveal a green tunic and matching pants on its shape as it stood up in the way a man would. “Come on,” Rajh yelled. “Ze Koshir might die zis day, so I vant to get ze bolt through ze head and get paid before he does!”

Joran shrugged. “Lead the way then, cat. We don’t wanna miss this!”

~^+^~
Arial backed up a step, never taking his eyes off Nhur. “Kaz, if you have any ultra powered spells, now's the time to not hold back and use them,” he whispered.

“Oh,” she replied. “When I want to, you won’t let me fire one off, but when we’re facing certain death, it’s all of a sudden the best idea to use something that could easily backfire on us?”

“Well if it’s certain death, then there shouldn’t be a problem now,” he shot back.

Nhur tapped his staff on the ground, sending a loud rap echoing through the air. “If you two are done,” he said, “then I suggest you make this easy on yourselves and just drop your weapons and die. There’s no need for the people to see too much unnecessary violence on this night.”

A voice in the crowd shouted, “Like hell it’s unnecessary! Long live the old guy and not the sack of bones!” Joran and Rajh climbed onto the platform, much to the dismay of the guards that were pinned on the ground by either raging drunks or the body of the odd yak or two.

“Oh, joy,” Nhur yawned sarcastically. “It looks like there shall be four executions today. I wish I could say I’m surprised, but for some reason I’m not. But enough talk,” waving his hand in a dismissive manner, he shouted, “Guards! Kill these traitors!”

As the closest Ordinators started to advance, Kaz waved her hands in a mystical gesture. A blue flash emitted from the palm of one hand, blinding everyone in the vicinity, and when the light cleared, a dome of pure arcane energy surrounded the platform.

Nhur frowned. “Oh, and here I thought it was going to be uneven odds for a minute. ‘Tis a Pity.”

“It still is!” Joran cried. “Look man, we got you outnumbered four to one here!”

A wicked grin crossed Nhur’s features. “We shall see. Now, let’s make things interesting, shall we?” As he waved his staff in the air, eight orange orbs materialized in the air, hovering before burrowing into random spots on the ground.

Kaz flung out her arm, releasing a volley of red darts right at the Mahjarrat as Arial and Joran charged him. Rajh readied his crossbow, took aim, and then proceeded to fire a volley of bolts in Nhur’s direction. Nhur waved his staff again, causing the darts to dissipate in midair, and the bolts stopped completely before dropping to the ground.

Arial swung a blue blade, aiming at Nhur’s head. The Mahjarrat was too quick, and managed to duck beneath the blow before it connected, and then retaliated with a backhand that sent him sprawling to the ground. Joran managed to connect, however, sending the two tumbling to the ground. As they rolled around, Nhur managed to push Joran off onto a spot that flashed a bright orange before erupting into flames, leaving him engulfed in flames.

Kaz shot off blue darts this time, aiming them at Joran. They connected, and from the looks of things the fire didn't have the chance to do much damage. Rajh fired more bolts again, all while screaming. “Vhy…von’t…..it….vork!?” Nhur brought his staff around in Rajh’s direction, and a wall of force stopped them in their tracks. Whispering a word of power, Nhur waved the staff again, and watched as the bolts began to turn around in the air.

Rajh tried to move, but to his dismay, he discovered that he was frozen in place.

Nhur waved his staff once again, and the bolts zeroed in on the Rakshasa. As they were about to hit home, Rajh found himself staring at Nhur’s back in the blink of an eye, and, to his joy, he found out that he could also move again. He saw Arial recovering from the hit he took earlier, and helped him up. They didn't have much time, however, because as soon as Arial got his bearings Nhur turned to face them, staff at the ready. Kaz made a few motions with her hands before touching Joran on the shoulder, whose features then shortly became a little blurry to everyone.

Arial spoke a short command, which promptly caused the cerulean blades to appear in his hands once more. He drew back with one to strike once more, this time readying the blade in his off hand to defend against any melee attack that Nhur might try as he quickly drew near. As he did so, Joran once again charged Nhur with a wild scream, and a blow with his foot managed to connect to the Mahjarrat’s knee, causing him to falter and kneel on the ground as Arial made an upward thrust that pierced Nhur’s armor. Rajh made some guttural sounds that caused his feline frame to grow bigger and appear bulkier, then charged the enemy, managing to give Nhur a nasty cut across his face with his claws before the Mahjarrat got up and smacked the Rakshasa with his staff, causing a sickening crack to reverberate in the air.

Kaz wove her hand in a circular motion, which caused a small black hole to appear in mid air. Proceeding to quickly rummage through it, she drew a wand made of a yak horn topped with a topaz gem, pointed it at Nhur, and spoke the command word. Blue fire spewed forth from the wand and managed to connect with Nhur before he could cast any counter magic, engulfing him in flames in a manner similar to which afflicted Joran as the battle started.

Nhur’s features began to blur, accompanied by an unholy scream as his frame shrank down to that of a decrepit figure, his eyes deteriorating as his skin literally melted away from his eye sockets, causing red specs of light to take their place in the newly formed holes. The change took only a matter of seconds to complete, as the remainder of Nhur’s visible skin twisted and shrank, and then quickly flaked off to reveal a skeletal frame that somehow still managed to look comfortable in his now bulky armor.

Joran charged again, this time aiming a punch at Nhur’s now skull-like visage. Before it connected, the Mahjarrat’s hand shot up and caught it, and with unholy strength sent Joran sailing right into Kaz, knocking her down.

“Enough of this,” he said. Nhur pointed his staff at the two, which emitted a blue glow as it released a bolt of energy. The attack connected, forcing both Joran and Kaz to stand up straight. They tried moving, but to no avail. “Now, let’s see how much punishment you can take,” Nhur growled.

He lifted his staff into the air, muttering some indecipherable arcane phrases as he did so, which caused the atmosphere to thicken with ancient power.

Arial and Rajh tried to move as well, but the power in the air was suffocating them to the point where they were helpless. Nhur pointed his staff directly at Joran, then thought better of it and pointed it at a space that was between him and Kaz. The staff released the charge, and as it reached the duo it exploded, leaving them to wither in agony on the ground.
