He steered his current mount towards a large rock-like creature that was fighting alongside a man in red garb against a small group of the Black Guard. They didn't seem to be winning, though they were putting up one hell of a fight.

The hippogriff screeched and veered to the right. Rajh held on for dear life, and felt a tingle of electricity in the air. A loud crash echoed through the air, and a lightning bolt danced among the Ordinators.

"Vat ze...” He muttered. How did that happen? Wasn’t the Keep supposed to be magic proof?

The Keep started to rumble loudly and shake violently. Various stones along the edges of the roof fell off and rapidly spiraled to the ground below. Rajh looked around in horror, and steered the hippogriff back towards the giant rock man. He urged the creature to go faster, and he swooped down low enough for the red garbed man to jump onto the back of the hippogriff.

“Get ze hell away!” Rajh shouted.

The man shook his head, and replied, “Not now. Get the general and let’s get out of here.”

The Rakshasa didn't have time to argue. Once again the hippogriff swooped low enough to the ground, and the rock man threw Arial’s unconscious body into the air. The red man caught the general, and shouted over the noise, “Don’t worry, I got him!”

Rajh growled in anger at the man, but didn't have time to react further as the hippogriff began to dive towards the ground a few hundred feet below.

~^+^~

Grim looked at the departing rebels with a sadness in his heart. He knew he would always die in this cursed place, but he didn't count on having any chance at freedom until not more than a few moments ago.

As Skyvern Keep finally collapsed beneath his feet, he found himself wishing something he thought he’d never wish for since his change. Then, everything went black as his rocky body smashed into pieces among the falling debris.

The blue man appeared on a hilltop not far from Skyvern Keep. His head hung low in sorrow. He knew the power would survive the incident at the Keep. A Damned One was far too durable to be killed in such a manner.

However, he hated what was to come. Nobody, not even one of the Damned, should have to experience it. Ever. The tattooed man spoke a word of power and teleported to his next destination.

~^+^~

The Hound’s ears perked up. It slowly rose from its slumber as a loud rumbling sounded in the distance. Swiftly making its way through the trees of the shadowed forest, the Hound came to a small clearing. In the distance, smoke rose into the sky as a stone building fell to the ground.

Pain shot through the Hound’s thigh. It lowered its head, and tried working out the dagger that the Purple Demon had stabbed it with back in the tomb. It wouldn’t budge.

The Hound’s attention was distracted by a screeching sound. It looked to the sky, and saw many bird-like forms fill the air. Two of them began to fall to the ground, and the creature’s uncanny eyesight could make out many more figures among the falling shapes.

Excited, the Hound dropped to all fours, and let loose a primal howl. Many more howls answered the call, and so the stage would be set among the pack. It had worked hard to bring more to the fold of the Dark One’s family, so it knew they would come, if not out of fear of reprisal, then at least respect for the one who had enlightened them to the glory of the Dark One, the Alpha of the pack.

Above all else, what kind of self respecting hunter would pass up the opportunity for food?

Well, that ends the first half of things. Interlude II will be coming within the next week or so because of my work schedule that managed to set me back as far as writing goes >.>

In the meantime, now's probably gonna be the best time to offer any feedback regarding the thing so far. It's far from over, but I'd like to at least make sure the readers are comfortable with how the story progresses as far as writing and character/plot development are concerned before going too far into this. Interlude II
<><>
Varrock’s new guard headquarters stood a silent silhouette against a bright moon in the middle of the night. The building itself had been in the city for years, but before the Liberators came, it used to be a church that was rather unsuccessful. The congregation of the Saradominist church was rather small back in the building’s glory days, and even then the members weren’t as attentive to the cleric as members of the other churches.

Many theories were thrown around to explain the lack of enthusiastic congregation, but all anyone could agree on was that a drunken priest, though funny at times, was just not worth listening to. The church eventually closed down after the Liberators attack due to the simple fact that even the most diehard practitioners of any faith would be hard pressed to pray for salvation in a city that has seen more than its fair share of danger, and eventually the security bureau Allivierion had stepped in and renovated the place so the city guard had a base of operations for the time being.

Of course, the renovations hadn’t gone without a fair share of local gossip as well. Instead of the somewhat peaceful atmosphere that pervaded the church grounds in the past, the building now appeared as little more than a military base used by the various orders of Knights in the world. A wrought iron fence surrounding the entire area didn't help matters either, which made any tension that could usually be ignored flare to the front of the thoughts of any who saw it.

After all, what was Alliverion doing outfitting the headquarters of what was left of the city guard with security measures that would usually be reserved for more noble knights and more sinister personalities?

Unbeknownst to the guards patrolling the premises, a shadow watched them from across the street. The figure waited until the guards turned the corner of the building, and it dashed up to the fence and leapt over it easily.

It landed silently, and hurried to take cover behind a plant that the security bureau had apparently left in an attempt to make the place look more ‘normal’ to outsiders. The guards passed by the plant, and didn't seem to notice the shadow at all. It laughed to itself, and looked up to find a window on the first story right above its position.

The shadow thought for a moment. It knew its destination lay in the basement area, not the first floor. That’s where crime scene evidence was kept, assuming that the fools behind the guard were naïve enough to believe that nobody would be stupid enough to attempt to break into an area whose only access point was a door on the ground floor next to the secretary’s desk. The logic made sense, so it reasoned to start there.

Guards passed the plant once more, and the shadow noticed a set of keys dangling from the waist of one. It quickly snatched the keys, and the guard didn't seem to notice. So this is the ‘city’s finest', it thought to itself. Fools.

The shadow began to cast a spell. Noise erupted from window above, and it heard shouts of alarm as footsteps pounded the stairs to go investigate. The shadow wasted no time in making its way through the front door.

“So, lemme get this straight,” the captain of the guard said. “You say you tried to stop these Brotherhood guys from killing the girl, but got hit with a fireball or some spell?”

The Spider nodded. “Yeah, and I think I lost a few things of mine in the struggle. Which is why I came here. I want my cloak back, if you don’t mind.”

The captain shook his head. “Sorry kid, but that’s evidence. Procedures say we can’t just hand any evidence out to anyone, even if it was their prized possession in the first place.”

“Evidence of what!?” the Spider shouted. “That I was there? I have some news for ya, cap, but I think the entire city knows that already!”

“First off, the name’s Rovin, wise guy,” the captain responded. “Second off, procedures are procedures. Believe me, I want to give you your cape back, but I’d be risking my job if I did.”

A loud noise erupted from below. The pair jumped in surprise, and The Spider was already going into a defensive position as the clamping boots of the guards stationed on the ground floor came to investigate.

The door to Rovin’s rather cramped office burst open, and a youth with dirty blonde hair stuck his head through. “Did you hear that, cap’n?” he asked.

“Who the hell didn't, Ben? What happened?”

The youth shrugged. “Dunno. We heard something come from the first floor, but didn't find anything when we got there. So we figured it had to be something up here.”
“Well, it’s not. We heard it come from below.”

“We? We who?” the youth innocently asked.

“Whadd’ya mean ‘we who’? Can’t you see The Spider right-” Rovin stopped in mid sentence. Where the black-clad man was mere seconds before, stood nothing.

Rovin slammed his fist on his desk. “Again?! How the hell does he do that?!”

The Spider quickly made his way down the stairs to the ground floor. Luckily for him, the guards were too busy looking for the source of the loud noise, so sneaking through the building was child’s play to him. At least, as long as he kept to the shadows and employed his tricks carefully. He couldn’t afford to be wasteful with his magic until he had his cape back.

He entered the main lobby, and noticed nothing out of place. A secretary’s desk was set up on the far end of the wall, and the door next to it stood open only a little bit. Potted plants near the entrance acted as floral sentries, and a glass chandelier hung from the ceiling.

He thought for a second. He didn't recall the door being open when he came in, and he doubted that anyone would be down there at this time of night. As far as he knew, everyone was either outside or upstairs….weren’t they?

“Hell, why not?” he muttered to himself. The Spider kept to the shadows as he moved towards the door, and shut it behind him after he made it through the wooden portal unseen. He found himself at the top of a stairway leading down to a darkened area. Without any torches keeping the area lit, it almost looked like the steps were leading to his very own grave.

“Yeah…like I’m that lucky,” he said under his breath. He began to make his way down the stairs with an uneasy feeling. He kept asking himself what could go wrong, but after the events of the past few days he couldn’t help but feel cautious.

~^+^~

Viez found himself in the evidence room. “Well, at least they’re that stupid,” he said to nobody in particular. His natural darkvision colored the room a dull grey in the total blackness of the room, though he imagined with a light around the room wouldn’t appear much different to him anyway.

First things first, he decided. The half demon looked around, and attempted to find wherever the guards held the evidence for recent cases.

It wasn’t easy, as the walls were lined with drawers labeled in the usual guard jargon, and those few labels he could understand weren’t related to his search at all. He eventually decided to try looking through a desk that was situated in the middle of the room, and to his surprise he found some sort of key to decode the labels. He found one marked ‘Brhd’, and decided to search through the corresponding drawer.

He was delighted to find that the drawer appeared to be the correct one. In it lay several files in folders, a black cloak with spiderwebs lining it in odd patterns, and among other things, a card with an eye situated in the center of an arcane pentacle. Viez pocketed the card, and began to look through the drawer just to see if he missed something. He picked up a file, and out of it dropped a bronze key. Viez picked up the bronze key, and opened the file.

<><>
Name: Alya

Age:20

Cause of Death: Severe blood loss. High probability of being caused by crossbow bolts found at crime scene.

Other Notes: Alliverion medical teams have examined the corpse and found the victim’s eye color to be an oddity. No magical energy traces were found on corpse. Victim is neither very rich nor well-known, making the cult's interest in her even more surprising. See Spider Files for further details. Victim’s corpse was moved to Morgue. Key is kept in file as per security protocols.
<><>

Viez shook his head in disgust. This is what the city guard kept for records? No wonder these guys couldn’t catch any of those Brotherhood men, because he doubted anyone else would be successful with this kind of information either.

Out of curiosity, the half demon looked through some more files. Maybe his sister’s was incomplete since they couldn’t find out much about her. Another one read as such:

<>
Name: Romeo Gontamue

Age: ?

Cause of Death: Victim was found poisoned in his own home shortly after the Brotherhood first appeared in Varrock.

Other Notes: A minor noble of Varrock. Most citizens complained about him being too whiny. Possible that The Brotherhood may not be behind the murder, though his death precedes the calling card they’ve started leaving in recent months.
<>

And another read:

<>
Name: Arnold Gorvanki

Age: 18

Cause of Death: Stab wounds and slashed throat.

Other Notes: First victim where the infamous calling card was found. Known as a womanizer and a very minor noble to the point where even the lowest of the lot considered him a joke. Thanks to the meticulous record keeping efforts of his immediate family, four crystals believed to be family heirlooms were recorded as being stolen from his home in northwest Varrock shortly after the murder.
<>

Viez thought he had seen enough. His next stop was the Morgue, so he headed back through the entrance to the evidence room.

~^+^~

The Spider crawled on the ceiling quietly as he attempted to navigate the corridors beneath the guard station. He heard a sound coming from a door down the hall to his left, so he stopped and waited in the shadows. What he saw surprised him.

A massive creature passed beneath him. His first thought was that the thing was a man, but no normal man had red skin, stubs that looked like they belonged to a Lesser Demon on his head, and massive muscles that seemed somehow….just *unholy*.

He waited until the creature vanished from sight, and crawled in the direction from which it came. He found a door marked ‘Evidence’, and dropped to the floor as he ran into the room.

Inside sat several drawers against the walls, but only one was opened and had several papers scattered across the floor. The Spider walked over to the open drawer, and shifted through the random items within. His cloak wasn’t hard to find at all, so he quickly threw it over his back, which caused some shadows to stretch from his suit and meld themselves into the precious item.

A voice rang through the room. “I knew it was a trick! Alright, you ass, get down on the ground NOW!"

The Spider turned, and saw a pair of guards standing in the doorway. He threw his hands into the air and replied, “Hey guys. Umm...I got my cloak back, so why not step aside and let me handle that demon thing that’s walking around down here with us?”

“Nice try, kid,” the guard answered. “We won’t fall for the same scam twice.”

“Alright, then. The hard way it is.” The Spider ran towards the guards, and pulled his cloak around to the front. Gossamer webs burst from the cloak, and entangled the guards. They panicked and tried to get free from the webbing, which caused them to fall to the floor as their efforts quickly became more and more futile.

Running as fast as he could, the Spider could only hope that the demon thing wasn’t another Brotherhood attack.
