‘Just a quick short cut,’ Alex’s mom had said. ‘You will get to Conner's in no time.’

Alex was at a crossroads, literally. He stood on Fifth Street wearing a puzzled look like trying to mull something over in his head. If he took fifth he would walk up to eleventh, cross through his elementary school and eventual walk half a mile down to Conner’s house.

Right now Alex was staring down Flynn’s Alley. That was the unofficial name it had, its real name was the alley between fifth and ninth. It was unpaved and was littered with trash bags and pet dishes and all that jazz.

The wind was starting to pick up into a heavy gust. Alex zippered his blue coat up. The clouds appeared dark and murky, ready to deliver rain but still keeping the anticipation. Alex was trying to visualize Conner’s house right at the end of the alleyway. He couldn’t.

Flynn’s Alley was named after a person. A man who was just as infamous as the alley. His house was located exactly halfway down the path, built on top of a plateau like a vampire’s castle. Everyone thinks it’s haunted.

The rumors were grotesque and despicable. It was believed that Mr. Flynn invites children when they reach his house. He serves them tea and acts like a hospitable host. Then he slits their throat with his lucky knife and carves a smiley face on the back of their heads with a carving knife. Like a pumpkin. Exactly like a pumpkin.

He would then store them in the freezer for a couple of months. He had to be careful, though—meat never tastes good when it’s expired.

Somebody had told Alex that was when Flynn goes Egyptian. He would put a hook through his victim’s nose, hook onto the brain and squeeze it through. Alex couldn’t even imagine a huge brain fitting through a tiny nostril. Flynn would then bake it in a glass dish a make a cherry pie so he could put it outside on a special post that Flynn had made and it was for anyone that passed down the alley that wanted to help themselves. The body was left in the freezer to be preserved.

Alex never believed any of it. To him it sounded comical. But he was still afraid. There was something weird in that house and he just didn't know what.

Making matters worse it was still twilight time when Alex was beside the alley. That meant it was dark, but not enough for the street lights. His fear level had just increased by two.

Alex brushed his sweet blond hair behind his head and made his decision. Moms knew best and he would listen to his mom. If he got killed and made into pie he would blame her later.

The first step wasn’t the hardest. In fact, Alex made it a whole ten meters before panicking. It was when he looked back to gauge his distance and tripped over a fallen metal trash can did he start freaking out.

During his fall he believed he was dying. That scary feeling of freefall was the worst you could get when unanticipated. And you couldn’t stop it, it stopped on it’s on, sometimes concluding with a ‘splat!’ Alex fell on his back and looked at the black, rain-filled clouds hearing all the owl hoots and cricket chirps that now suddenly flooding his brain.

It had been a bad idea to go down Flynn’s Alley. A bad, stupid and terrible idea. But Alex just got up, spun his head to look for any late time murderers and continued down the uneven path.

Something as unnerving as Flynn’s Alley disintegrates any chance for Alex to have braced himself. How terrifying did an old man have to be to have an alley named after him? He hoped that he would never find out the answer to that question.

‘Here it comes. Get ready, you sissy.’ His walking never stopped, just gradually slowed until his feet froze in front of house number 1570.

It looked...normal. White trim surrounded the blue paneled house. The windows were clean and free of the cobwebs and dust Alex expected. Flynn was also a gardener. A small island in the middle of the lawn was full of tulips and roses and every flower that smells nice. Alex almost smiled until he saw the pie.

His first thought was that the rumors had been true. That was until Alex queasily walked over and took a deep breath of the pastry. It was on a small platform driven in by a one meter spike. The meat was still strong and fresh. Alex’s second though was that Mr. Flynn was a lunatic.

Alex took one look at the house, and then at the path he had walked so far. Far in the distance he could see a small notepad. His notepad. Alex had kept a tiny diary, being cautious to hide it from the other boys. If the saw, they would laugh, maybe enough to spray milk from their noses.

He had to get it. Alex’s soul was poured into those pages. If he didn't get it, how would he live? A ten-year-old only has a one or two special belongings that they clung onto until they ‘were too old for it’. The diary was his.

"Turn. Around. Son.” The voice was firm and instructive, coming from right behind Alex. He turned around with petrified eyes and saw Mr. Flynn for the first time in his life.

Alex’s first look at Flynn reminded him of the Crypt keeper. The ambient porch lights acted like a veil, preventing Alex from perceiving the whole face. Flynn had a long pointed nose with short, gray thinning hair. His skin was stretched like someone had cut it off him and pulled it as far as it would go. Alex couldn’t see his eyes, which were just black specks in the light.

“You. Inside. Now." Alex didn't think his legs could take him that far. They felt like rubber, ready to collapse on the first step. Slowly he made his way into house 1570. Since he imagined it would be his last time in the outdoor air, Alex took a good whiff from the nice smelling flowers.

“Sit.” Alex found the closest chair and shuffled into his seat. They were in the kitchen, which looked really bright and cheery to Alex. Splashes of yellow covered the walls as well as paintings of famous artists. He only got a quick second to look before he realized that he was in the same room as the most feared man in town.

“So kid, what brings you down the most haunted, gruesome, horrifying alley in town?” His face almost looked full of amusement—not madness. His face looked more kind when Alex could clearly see it. It reminded him of his own grandfather.

“W-well sir, I w-was j-just—,”

“Don’t stutter, kid. Nobody likes a babbler. Just tell me when you’re ready.” It took two minutes of silence and the ticking from the nearby wall clock.

“My mom told me it was a shortcut to my friend’s house.” Alex said without breaking a sweat.

“Did she now? Moms can be good for that. Always helpful, they are. You were quite brave to travel down this alley. I bet all your friends would be too scared.” Alex felt slightly proud by that comment, and then decided to push his luck.

“So you don’t murder kids and cut them into little pieces?”

Flynn suddenly had a look of seriousness on his face. “Of course I do. And then I put them in front of my window for all my neighbours to see!"

A small smile shone on Alex's face. He could bet that when he told Conner he would nearly wet his pants. "Mister Flynn why—,”

“Don’t ever call me Mr. Flynn again. My name is David. I don’t think I caught yours, did I?”

“No, you didn't. It's Alex. I was just wondering why you live all alone.” Alex’s face was half full of dread, the other half longing for an answer.

“I had a wife, a long time ago, but she went away and I guess I just fell in love with this house instead. Enough about me though, what’s school like for you?”

Alex’s eyes tore away from David’s and refocused on the entire cutlery lying in the sink in a pool of hot, soapy water.

“Alex, are you being bullied?” Mr. Flynn now looked concerned. He walked over to the marble island counter, grabbed the tissue box, and plopped it beside Alex. Alex grabbed a handful and smeared them across his eyes.

“It doesn’t even matter; I just want him to leave me alone. His name is Chase and he is even shorter than I am. Isn’t that funny?” Alex gave a choky fake laugh and continued. "I don’t know if hates me or not, but since he has started picking on me, I have lost lots of my friends. You won’t tell my parent’s, will you?”

David just stroked the stubble on his chin for a few seconds and then his eyes turned fiery.

“No, I won’t. And I won’t give you some pansy crap about ratting on him or whatever you youngsters call it now. If you can’t face this kid now, you are going to have problems facing kids when you get older.”

“So what can I do?”

“Tomorrow at school, I want you to walk up to this Chase and tell him to get out of your face, or else.”

“What if he doesn’t listen?” Alex asked not even wanting to imagine the situation if he did.

“Well then you do your ‘or else’. Unfortunately I can’t tell you what it is, but when you are know what it is for sure, and then I promise you he will leave you alone. I want you to know that you are not like most kids. You’re special, Alex. Remember that.”

“Maybe...” Alex mumbled, uncertain. David practically jumped out of his chair, scratching the legs harshly against the linoleum.

“Come on. I think I have something to cheer you up.” He gestured to Alex and opened a door right outside of the kitchen. It led into nothing but darkness. Alex knew what it was. They had one at his house, but he had only traveled down his once. He had turned on a light, revealing a dusty blanket covering some of his old preschool toys that looked so much like a corpse. Alex had run upstairs crying. Then his mom had come downstairs with him just to show him how big of an idiot he was. Alex never liked basements and he knew he wouldn’t like David’s one bit.

The walked down the creaky wooden steps which led to a cement basement. There was only one large room, split in half by a long strip of plywood. There was a workshop, complete with a vice, chisels and tools and scraps of wood and metal. Bird houses, fire pokers, treasure chests and other projects littered the floor. For a second Alex couldn’t wait to be retired.

On the other half, standing alone in the corner was a white box. It had a neat plastic rim, as well as a metallic handle. Alex shivered and backed up a step. He still hadn’t flushed the myths completely from his mind. Very distantly, Flynn began to talk.

“You are going to be the first person to make a meat pie with me. I just need to fetch a few tools. What I need you to do is fetch us a package of ground beef, like the stuff you make for hamburgers. Can you do that, Alex?”

He nodded and started shuffling his tiny feet towards the freezer. He could feel the frosty temperature from it slowly creep under his skin. One hand curled around the handle and he froze.

Did he want to know? Why would Mr. Flynn make Alex go into the freezer if there was something grotesque in it? ‘Better not, Alex. You know there is going to be a little boy in there, just like you. He is going to be blue a frozen with pale eyes that when you see, you will scream like when you screamed in your own basement. Only this time you will go insane. And David Flynn is going to chop you up and put you in a stew instead of a pie because you’re ‘special’.’

His hands gripped tighter and slowly he lifted up the lid. It was one-quarters of the way up when Alex slammed it down again.

‘I saw blood; for God’s sake I saw blood!’ Alex’s common sense was overruled by his fearful fascination. He thought it was sick, but maybe part of him wanted to see a dead body.

Alex let out a long sigh. Apples. Alex had almost screamed at the top of his lungs over seeing red apples. 'That’s Alex for you. In his next show he is going to shriek at a bowl of spaghetti that looks like human brains.’

He gave a squeaking laugh and took out some ground beef, heading back upstairs to David.

The first thing that David made him do was wash his hands. Alex went into the bathroom wallpapered with blue and purple flowers and used the green bar of soap. He almost gasped at the smell in there. He never wanted to get the scent of old people.

The pie was the most fun Alex had ever had. He even got to tenderize the meat with a special hammer. His mother thought he was too young to work in the kitchen. In the end they ended up with a perfect meat pie.

“Alex, do pigs fly?” David had asked him this while they were walking across the lawn.

“What?”

“Pigs flying, do you believe it?” Alex frowned and thought for a moment. David had stopped walking.

“I think they do,” Alex answered.

“Why is that?” Asked David.

Another tough question. Well, Alex had walked down the most haunted place in town, met the most haunted man, baked one of his dreadfully haunting pies and even seen his terrifyingly haunting freezer. That was good enough for Alex to believe.

“I guess if you have the imagination, pig’s can fly. Maybe they will travel through space.”

“Good answer, kiddo,” Flynn said and ruffled Alex’s hair. Together they set the pie on the pedestal and stood back to look at their masterpiece.

“I bet you must need to go to your friend Conner’s,” David said with a sigh. Conner didn't know he had taken the shortcut so he would assume that Alex had arrived just on time.

“I guess. David, one last question?”

“Shoot. You gave me one the best nights since my retirement.”

“Why do you make the pies?” Alex asked. Flynn just smiled.

“Two reasons. One, I love to allure people like you to my house, just so I can have a night like we just had. It gets pretty lonely here all alone.”

Alex was now official on Flynn’s Alley. David’s image was getting smaller and smaller. Alex sucked at goodbyes.

“And the second reason?”

“I thought it would be a little fun to go along with the town’s silly rumors. Beside’s it’s much more amusing to see all the little kids gasp when they see you at the supermarket.”

The next day David Flynn shot himself in both his eyes.

Alex took David’s advice. The next day at school Alex walked up to Chase Colsen and told him to get out of his face or else. Chase had laughed. That was when Alex punched him right in the nose, sending him sprawling onto the gravel, crying. Alex just thought that was the right thing to do. Flynn was right. The whole day everyone started treating him like they used to. It felt strange that all it took was a good hard punch to set things back in order.

When he had got home that day his mother didn't care that he had beaten up a boy. She wouldn’t stop hugging him and apologizing. She had read the paper and told him that Mr. Flynn had committed suicide. Alex was just shocked and his mother thought that was because she forced him to walk a couple of feet away from that house. That caused her to bawl even more.

Alex wasn’t scared, he was sad. Late that night he sneaked the newspaper and read the article with the title, ‘Retired Old Man Is Also Homicidal Maniac.’

Apparently the rumors were true. The police had found several dead children’s bodies hidden throughout the house. Some were cut into little pieces and others were whole, but missing brains. There were also large amounts of blood on all the walls of the house like he was trying to paint everything red. The editorial didn't reveal where the dead bodies were located (One was stuffed into the fridge, another was laying in the shower, looking ready to take a bath—Alex had mistaken the scent of old people for the scent of rotting flesh—and they found pieces of a hand sprinkled onto the pie that Alex and David had made).

An officer made a couple of comments saying how that Flynn was a crazy madman who deserved to be locked up for a long time. Not only that, but Flynn had horrifically wrote a poem in blood that they were analyzing. Alex had stopped reading there. David may have been insane and he didn't know if his life of crime started before or after the rumors, but to Alex he was just an old retired man.

David had spared Alex for a reason that he thought he would never figure out. But he had, and that was all Alex had to hold on to. No cop or parent would have told Alex what Flynn had and he the one who stopped Alex’s bullying problems. David was special, just like Alex.

He never told anyone about his adventure down Flynn’s Alley. The police never interviewed him and he never told any of his friends. After David died the name still stuck. Kids were afraid of the alley even more but not Alex. David was a killer. That wasn’t the part that Alex cared about. David was also compassionate and maybe the problem wasn’t that he was too crazy for this world. Maybe everyone else wasn’t crazy enough.

[Passage from the police statement]

...David Jeremiah Flynn was found in his kitchen, sitting in a chair with both his eyes bleeding and two bullets in his skull. We have decent evidence to believe it was indeed a suicide.

Numerous bodies were discovered but what intrigued the investigators most was the poem written in blood, on the yellow walled kitchen. The poem in question is being examined for some clue to if he hid one last victim that has not been located. It appears that the poem was written with two of his fingers simultaneously.

“I had tea with a dead inside white boy.
I gave life to the lifeless schoolboy.
Pigs really do fly.”

David Flynn was discovered at ten in the morning by the daily milk deliverer who claims...
