“Perhaps her benevolence requires assistance?” Ash spoke softly to the queen, yet her voice had that edge of power that could call the greatest powers of the universe to do her bidding. Queen Alexias knew this, and envied it.
“Only a trivial matter, really. Dear Ash, my oh-so-previous step-daughter has wandered off, would you be a dear and help find her?” Alexias about boiled over in the effort to keep her voice sweet.
“Hmmm, well, a princess fleeing the castle seems hardly a trivial matter to me. Why, there are fierce beasts outside these walls, such as giant scorpions, trolls, even dragons! I should hate to think what would happen if our little princess came near a dragon without so much as an anti-fire shield to protect her.”
The queen suppressed a smile. Roast brat sounded delicious. “Prepare for me the Well of Where-Things-Went. We will use the WWTW to find Cambria and --”
As if on cue, a tall, well-muscled man with a circlet of gold atop his graying hair strode into the room.
“... And, er, make sure our lovely princess is safe,” Queen Alexias finished up with ice-edged sweetness.
“Oh, dear,” the king said. “Has my daughter gotten herself into trouble? And dear, why in Gielinor are you wearing dirty socks?”
Alexias raised a dark eyebrow as Ash spoke. “Apologies, sire, her royal benevolence was assisting me in my never-ending magical experiments.”
“Right. Well, no need to smell like those awful HAM members, people, cleanliness is next to kingliness!”
“I thought it was next to godliness?” the brave guard pointed out.
“No, that's absurd. Who are you to know anything about wise sayings?” The king chuckled at the thought of a mere guard knowing more than him and gracefully strode out of the room.
As the queen turned around, she found that Ash and the guards had also made a silent departure, leaving the queen alone with her WWTW to figure out where that blasted bratty princess had gone.
