You are suspended high in the sky. The city of Ansdale and the surrounding countryside stretches out beneath you. You cannot move.

There is a golden light on the horizon. It appears to be the sun, yet it does not burn your eyes when you look upon it. Then it comes closer, and you realize it is no sun at all. The glowing ball of light comes to a stop just in front of you, no larger than the wheel of a car.

“Greetings mortal,”
a pleasant, almost fatherly voice says. But the tone quickly turns grim.
“I come with grave tidings.”

“A great change is coming to your world. Ancient evils are being awoken. Creatures you once thought were mere legend, who by their very nature must prey on the weak and the innocent to sustain themselves. They will turn others to their cause, filling them with corruption and stripping them of their humanity. This cannot be allowed.”

The voice pauses, and though the orb of light does not move, you feel as if your very soul is being judged.
“Heroes are needed to stand against this darkness,”
he finally says.
“I have chosen you to recruit them, and to lead them. It is an immense burden, but someone must bear it. In this, you shall find atonement for your own failings.”

Then, the light slowly drifts forward, passing through your chest and into your body. For a few moments, a warmth fills you. Then, the light leaves, and returns to its original position.

“You are now a Templar,”
the voice tells you.
“It is your duty to vanquish evil. To purge the creatures of darkness and the night. A duty which must be fulfilled, at any cost.”

And with that, the orb of light begins to drift away.
“See it done.”

Then you wake up.
Beneath the gold, the Bitter Steel.

Alyson Halwell woke up that morning feeling... quite woozy. She sat up in bed perhaps a little too fast, or was coming down with something. As she stretched her arms over her head, she quickly snapped her hand back down to her neck. There was a sharp pain that she couldn't really explain.

Must've slept on it wrong or something... Aly thought, though her mind also drifted back to the bizarre nightmare she was having. Who was the woman in her dream? Why did it feel so real?

Aly shook her head, trying not to put too much thought into a dream. It was far from the weirdest dream she'd ever had. A quick glance at her phone told her it was about time for her to start getting ready for her shift. But when she went to open her curtains and let some light in the room, she immediately felt sick again. Maybe she should call out of work, just for the day.

"Hey, Marcus," she spoke into the phone. "Not feeling great today. Can you call someone else in?" There was a pause, then a sigh, from the other end of the phone. "I know, I'm sorry it's so last minute, but I feel like I can barely walk outside right now..."

Another pause. "Okay, can you just tell Stacy I'll take her night shift tomorrow if she covers my morning shift today?" Finally, an agreement. "Thanks so much," Aly added, a second before the line went dead.

With work taken care of for the day, Aly slipped into her standard attire. However, despite the relative warmth of the day, she slipped into some dark jeans rather than her usual shorts. She pulled her hoodie over her head - a constant when she wasn't feeling well - and headed outside. She wasn't sure why, but she felt too restless to simply stay inside despite the weakness she felt.

Miles awoke suddenly - the image of the giant wolf burned into his mind, the pain of the dream when it bit his shoulder fading rapidly - yet his shoulder ached. He raised a hand to it, felt no blood, glanced down to see that it was perfectly fine. What the hell was he thinking about? Of course it was fine, it was just a damnable dream! He wiped his face and groaned, checking the time to find it was pretty much right when he'd normally wake up - so up he went, letting the dream fade into the background as he went about his morning routine.

-

" Mornin' bro... " Came a sleepy voice from the kitchen doorway, light slaps of footfall stepping onto the tiles.

" Morning. Bacon? " Miles didn't even turn around, merely continuing to work on cooking up breakfast as the sound of a chair getting dragged across the floor was heard.

" Mmph... " Came the response, which he knew to take as a ' yes please you're the best brother', which of course he was she'd just never say it this early. Luckily he was almost finished and soon served up a hearty meal of bacon and eggs, sliding two plates onto the table before taking the remaining chair. Miles took a bite before glancing up, spotting the half-dead face of his younger sister Nisha wolfing down the meal, already splattering egg on her cheek without notice.

She was not a morning person.

Still, as they ate she gradually perked up more and more - until eventually as her utensils hit the plate again her eyes were nearly half open. She looked across at him.

" You gonna be home later? "

" Should be, depends if I get a call or not - why? "

She shrugged. " Was gonna invite Ty and Halle over after school, wanted to know if you'd be home to cook or if we'd order out. "

He shrugged back. " If I'm not here when you get home, call me - I can tell you then. " A noncommital grunt from his sister was his only reply, as she got up and went to leave.

" Sink. "

She turned back to grab her plate and

dumped it into the sink with a clatter, then shuffled back across the apartment to the bathroom. Miles shook his head, finishing his own food and washing the dishes. Just as he finished he felt his phone go off, fished it out and answered the incoming call.

" It's a bit early, isn't it? " He started with a good natured chuckle only for the smile to fade off of his face when he got his reply. He glanced across the apartment at the closed bathroom door, hearing the shower running, then lowered his voice a touch. " A meeting this early, Trevor? What's this all about? " The reply only made him frown deeper, shaking his head in exasperation. " Yeah, I'll be there soon. I swear Jerry's starting to lose it with all this paranoia... "

Ending the call Miles put a hand to his head, sighing deeply in frustration. Someone had been skimming some of the cash from their jobs, Jerry had been on a warpath about it - made him real paranoid, and frankly it'd started making Miles nervous. The way things were going it felt like only a matter of time until Jerry found out who was doing it, then if his anger was anything to go by.... Dammit, he really didn't want to be an accessory to murder.

He looked across at the bathroom door again, sighed, then grabbed his keys and wallet.

" Just got a call, I'm heading out early! " He shouted over thr unning water.

" 'kay! " Was the simple shout back. Miles headed out the door and down into the street, getting a deep breath of the cool air before setting out.

Tia rests her cheek on her palm, her elbow on the desk as she stares vacantly at the computer screen. An email occupies the screen from her area manager, probably whining about why their targets are not higher. The red-haired young woman slowly blinks, scrolling through the email before pausing to take a sip from her cup of tea.

I hate this, she idly thinks to herself, before looking up at the sound of the office door opening. Her store manager - Kristie - enters, exhaling sharply.

"Checking our sales again?" Kristie asks, sounding as tired and defeated as Tia feels. Tia shrugs, minimising the email to open up the task viewer. A couple more clicks.

"You want the bad news or the....Bad news?" She asks at last. Kristie winces, rubbing her eyes. "We haven't even cleared four percent of promotional sales. I don't know what the fuck Sheila and Josie are doing out there, but they're sure as hell not pushing the promotions. And Harry's really not happy about it."

"Harry can go fuck himself," Kristie mutters darkly, before peering at her supervisor. "You look tired, have you even looked at any daylight today?"

"Ha. Ha." Tia leans back from her desk and stretches her arms above her head with a yawn. "I think I need a coffee. You want anything?" She asks as she rises to her feet to grab her bag.

"Coffee. Black. Like my sooouuuul."

Tia rolls her eyes. "You don't even have a soul," she retorts with a brief grin before ducking out of the office in time for the stapler to bounce off the door handle. Snickering to herself, Tia makes her way out into the busy street to look for the nearest coffee shop.

Aly wandered around. She hadn't eaten today, but the thought of eating anything made her stomach turn even more than just being outside was. Thus, she had no real goal as she wandered.

But... There was a guy. He was much larger than she, and something about him called to her. Normally, she would probably just ignore the whole situation. She'd just continue on her way, go to work, do whatever she needed to do. But today was not a normal day. Today, she woke up from a weird nightmare and felt sick just existing outside.

So today, she walked right up to him. "Hey," she started, suddenly starting to lose her nerve. "I like your outfit." Aly was suddenly extremely aware of her own outfit, and how her hood was pulled above her head.

Miles hadn't gotten too far from his apartment building, maybe half a block or so on the way to his piece of junk car, when someone approached him. His ears twitched ever so slightly, the sound of her footsteps reaching him second - her voice was third. First was this strange smell that he caught just a couple seconds beforehand, making him slow to a stop as he frowned - what was-

But that thought, of course, didn't get a chance to finish when the woman stepped up to him. Miles blinked - looking down at the short, hooded figure with no sense of recognition. Did he know her? He didn't think so, what he could see of her face under the hood wasn't familiar to him. It took a further half second for him to register what she said - his confusion shifting way for a friendly smile.

" Hey, " He retaliated, his eyes briefly moving over her - cocking his head slightly to one side. " I like yours too - little modest for the weather, but there's a comfy kind of charm to it. " It was odd - not just the sudden encounter, there was something about the woman herself that Miles felt as though he couldn't ignore. An odd smell he couldn't place - one he wasn't sure if he liked or not, but in the back of his head there was more than that - something telling him to not turn his back on this stranger in the street. But... More than that? He couldn't place the odd sense.

" I'm not complaining when a pretty girl approaches me, but was there something you wanted? "

Aly looked up and actually met the man's gaze. Of course, this cast the sun further into her eyes, forcing her to squint them shut. She pulled her hood down, as it wasn't really obscuring the sun at all by this point.

Her light hair drifted to form a halo around her face. It wasn't neat - she couldn't remember if she brushed it before she left the house - but it never got especially messy, either. It probably only added to her slightly disheveled look.

"Oh, sorry. I thought I recognized you from somewhere. You've got that general vibe, I suppose. But since I've got your attention," Aly smirked. "Any chance I could distract you for some coffee?" Something about him set her on edge. It didn't seem wholly negative but it... Wasn't right, either. Still, she'd developed a persona for work that helped her get tips. She could put on a pretty face even when someone internally made her uncomfortable.
