Xavier then thrusts his blade through the back of The Fog and out through the head with the full row of teeth, piercing it through the mouth. It moans and it's eyes dim to a dull green before fading into black.

I feel my skull starting to crack, The Fog's grip being more than strong enough to crush my brain.

"LILY!!" I yell, desperation in my voice. "NOW!!"

Then Xavier is beside me, sword being hurled through the air at tremendous speeds aimed at the back arm. The blade meets and cuts cleanly through the decaying flesh and I find myself falling to the floor. I tear the arm off my face, panting tiredly and seeing everything slightly redder than before.

Lily has made her way around to our side and has her hand held out ready to cast a spell. Xavier leaps forward and smashes his blade onto the head with the deformed mouth, splitting it's skull in two, killing it almost instantly. I stand and look at The Fog's main head. Despite all it's committed and it's imminent death, it shows no fear or remorse.

It is a monster. It must be killed.

Flames explode from Lily's hands and burn through The Fog's chest, intent on destroying the darkness inside and the hearts it got it's nourishment from. The hearts catch fire, some exploding in a shower of grisly blood and shredded remains, The Fog's body catches fire, the rotten skin burning away as if it were paper. The creature before us crumbles and falls to the ground charred and bloody.

But it's not over yet.

"Lily! Xavier! Get out of here!" I roar looking at them furiously.

The two of them exchange hesitant glances but do as I say. Before they're out the door I call out to them what may be my last words.

"Confront your fears and you shall overcome them. Remember this Lily! Goodbye, my friends!"

They both turned, unsure of what I meant. Lily looked at me with dread scrawled over her face. I returned the look fiercely, reminding her that she had to leave.

They turned again & bolted out the door, Lily sobbing all the way.

~Chapter XXIV~

Amidst the burning flesh and severed limbs in a house deep in the slums I stood. I looked upon the dead eyes of the corpses The Fog had stolen and befouled. it disgusted me that such a creature could exist and do this to a town. Well no more, I was going to destroy it.

Out of the chest, a pillar of fog formed, black and with green eyes. It started convulsing wildly, unable to keep a consistent shape. Then it spoke, telepathically as it always did.

"Fool. I will live on. You will die."

I smiled madly, much like Xavier did when he ran off to what we all thought would be his death.

"No. No, we will both die."

The Fog quickly formed into a rough sphere, then a cylinder. I produced from my belt a rune dagger, green weapon poison dripping off the end. The Fog glides forward at a fast speed heading for my mouth as it did in my dream. Only this time I let it.

It goes down my throat and spreads through my body, filling every vein, every artery trying to reach my heart. I raise the dagger and prepare to pierce my heart.

Only to have my arm freeze in midair. The blade falls from my hand and strikes the floor, an iciness washes over my body.

"Did you think that would work?" It taunts. "Why do you think I gave you that nightmare fool?"

My eyes widen, fear returning. How could I have been so foolish? Of course it was the one giving me the nightmares! And now the ultimate realisation kicks in.

The Fog had always been there. Inside of me. Giving me nightmares, surveying the world through my eyes looking for a suitable place to attack. It started in Lumbridge but it was far too small and underpopulated for it to survive. It needed somewhere bigger, so that day at Draynor it had gone inside of me and scouted out Varrock. But before that I had experienced nightmares, so it must have come from somewhere beforehand!

The flashes of extreme pain and internal bleeding had been it too, as a way of saying "Don't try to stop me or else." It had always been there.

Watching and waiting.

And now it had me right where it wanted me. An entire town slaughtered, enough hearts for it to last a lifetime. By now it would have gathered knowledge from my brain and know where to go next. Falador? Ardougne? It could take any one of the locations in my head & go to it to kill everyone there so that it may sustain it's own life.

I would not let that happen.

Something flares to life within me. A power that had for a very long time been dormant in my body and seemed to only be available to those who practiced the skill. Magical spells. It seems I'm able to do more than I first thought.

I throw my hands up over my ears as a sharp sound echoes through them. Pain sears within me as The Fog takes up space inside my blood system, forcing blood to squirt out of every orifice in my body. Blood sprays from my ears onto my hands in what may be the most pain I've ever experienced. I shake madly, blood froths forth from my mouth before I'm able to take action. I'd watched Lily cast magic many times and knew what to say.

The pain increases, The Fog knows what I'm doing.

I decide on the fire blast spell & set about casting it through my circulatory system to flush out The Fog and kill it.

Blood is shooting out from where my thumb and finger should be, spraying out like a gory fountain.

I say the words to the spell.

The shaking gets worse. My chest feels cold, as if my ribcage was made of ice.

My hearts stops as something touches it.

Fire swims through my body as I finish casting the spell.

Blood continues to leak from my body.

Everything is hot and cold at once.

Something beats against my chest. I know it isn't my heart.

The fire reaches my heart...

Blood explodes from my body, I cough up a puddle of it, my eyes seem to be crying red, my nose shoots it out like a tap. My ears burst with enough force to knock my hands away.

My eyes go vacant. The cold is gone. I fall to the ground.

I sleep. Peacefully.

The Nightmare is over.

***********************************************

My eyes open to light. After being in darkness for so long I shut them reflexively. Then open them again.

It's the sun, shining high in the sky illuminating the city.

I suddenly realise that I'm quite wet. Confused, I sit up and look around.

I'm submerged in the fountain, it's cool water washing away the stench of blood and guts replacing it with the crisp scent of purity. The dead no longer litter the streets and have been cleaned up, leaving behind nothing but cleanliness.

Standing before me, smiles blessing their faces is a crowd of people, among them; Lily and Xavier. Lily runs forward, tears in her eyes and all but leaps into the fountain to embrace me, splashing the entire crowd and myself sparking cheerful laughter. Xavier grins proudly, an eyepatch and bandages adorning his face and shoulder covering up the worst of his wounds.

"You're alive...!" Lily cries, the biggest smile in the universe stretched across her face and tears of joy streaming down into the water below.

I stand, Lily still attached to me in happiness.

Quietly and gratefully, I declare "It's over. The Nightmare has been defeated."

The crowd cheers, children jump and the men and women dance for joy. I'm taking aside by Xavier, Lily still wrapped around my shoulder not wanting to let go.

"Who are those people?" I inquire. Lily hops off me to answer the question.

"They're the survivors, like us!"

"Where did they hide?"

"They climbed the castle and hid in the roof."

Xavier approaches me, his grin still stuck to his face. "What happened?"

I knew the question was coming. I didn't expect to survive and from Xavier and Lily's expression from when they left, so did they. But I had survived and they wanted to know how and why.

First, I explained what had happened before the massacre, how The Fog took refuge in my body and surveyed the town. But then it was time to tell how I defeated it.

"Did either of you notice a trend in the corpses that The Fog attacked?" I ask.

Lily looks at me sideways and grimaces, obviously not having looked at the victims for very long at all so Xavier answers the question.

"I did, The Fog seemed to take a liking to devouring the hearts of others."

"Precisely," I reply. "So I figured that was how it survived; eating human hearts. At first I thought that if we simply destroyed all the hearts in it's body, it would die. But then I recalled the nightmare I had. The Fog could still briefly survive after having it's heart destroyed. It could then enter the body and thieve that persons heart to continue living until it found more sustenance."

Lily and Xavier stare at me bewildered.

"I then thought that I could kill it by poisoning my own heart after killing it so that it may die, but taking myself along with it. But before I could it managed to freeze my hand. It was close to killing me but..." I hold up my palm and create a small column of water and hurl it at a tree, snapping a branch off much to Lily and Xavier's amazement.

"I managed to cast a spell to burn through my blood vessels. It incinerated The Fog in the process and almost killed me, but here I stand alive and victorious."

The two of them just look at me, unable to comprehend how I could do that. I'd never been one to use my head as well as them or most people for that matter. Xavier then says the question aloud.

"How did you figure all of this out?"

I sigh, slightly unsure of whether I want to say it or not.

"As it lived in my mind stealing information from my brain, I too, learnt from it. I delved into it's thoughts and found what I needed to destroy it."

"When?" Lily asks.

"Just before it attacked us for the last time," I say. "It told me it was coming and as it did I stole it's thoughts somehow."

" 'Somehow'?" Xavier says, raising an eyebrow.

"I can't explain it. It just happened."

I look to the sky and sigh, thanking the gods that I could.

Then I turn to Lily and smile like she did when she first saw me alive and well.

"Lily, do you still have any cake?" I ask.

She looks at me confused for a second, but then realises what I meant and nods furiously.

"Yyyeesss I do!" She laughs. "I have balloons too! And streamers!"

I look to Xavier and wink, to which he returns with a thumbs up.

"Then I believe we owe you a party..." I say, reaching into my pocket. I take from it the ruby bracelet I bought months ago for this occasion. Upon seeing the expensive jewelry, her eyes light up.

"...Happy birthday Lily."
