~Chapter XXVII~
"I have a theory." Robert suddenly said, breaking the silence that endured. The two were quiet since they trekked down the seemingly endless, spiraling staircase they had wound up in.
"What is it?" Natalie queried.
"I think this house is one of Evan's creatures," Robert elaborated. "It makes sense. It moves, changes, listens and seems to speak to Evan. It must be like the creatures Georgia supposedly faced."
"Mm."
Robert suddenly stopped and gazed at the distant ceiling.
"Natalie," she looked at him. "No one is going to know what you're thinking if you don't say anything. We aren't psychic."
There was silence for a minute or so as Natalie bowed her head solemnly. Robert was in a trance, rushing through his thoughts, unveiling mysteries and presenting hypotheses to himself about everything around him. He mostly focused on Natalie, as he always did, wondering exactly how she worked. She wasn't like anyone else, she rarely spoke and never even hinted as to how she felt, not even to Veronica. Robert had always been afraid to ask Natalie or prompt her to speak her mind, for fear of upsetting her and the only reason he had courage at the moment was due to her revelation back during the chess game.
"Robert," this time, he looked at her. "I'm scared. That's why."
"Don't be. We're your friends."
"I know. I want to open up. I've tried explaining..."
"Your drawings?"
"Yes."
Robert understood now. Natalie never explained her drawings because that would mean explaining her emotions, which was something she dreaded. Simultaneously, however, she wanted her friends to at least learn about her. Secretly, she would love it when Robert and Veronica tried to interpret her artworks and smile inwardly when they, rarely, got it correct.
"I have another theory," Robert suddenly changed the topic, as an idea in his storm of a brain struck him. "And we should hurry if we want to test it. It could mean our salvation."
