~Chapter IV~
"So Veronica, where are we gonna look first?" Tristan asked energetically, breaking the silence that fell shortly after the group had split in two. Robert and his group of Edward and Georgia had been assigned the south of Edgeville whereas Veronica, Tristan and Natalie were to search the north. Since parting with the other three, Veronica had been quiet.
As Natalie was somewhat mute around anyone but Veronica, Tristan grew irritated with the silence, prompting him to speak.
"Oh, um," was Veronica's response, before falling back into brief silence. Tristan came close to tapping her on the shoulder to vivify her before she finally replied.
"We could try the river."
"To the river!" Tristan exclaimed, running off without heed of the two girls. Normally, Tristan's spontaneous actions incited anyone nearby to race after him, as he was prone to accidents, much like Georgia. But Veronica didn't move.
"We should go after him." Natalie said in her usual undertone.
Veronica snapped to attention and nodded, starting after Tristan hastily.
Natalie spoke again. "You're worried. Don't be, we'll find him."
"W-what makes you think I'm worried?" Veronica asked, turning to face her friend.
Natalie's response was simply a stare. Though shy and only taller than Veronica by a slight degree, Natalie's stares made even the bravest members of Edgeville'* society shrink away.
"I'm afraid that..." Veronica gulped. "That we'll find him, just, not...um..."
"In one piece?"
Veronica gazed at the ground and sniffed, holding back her emotions as best she could. The amount of concern she held for her friends was great, the very thought that one of them was hurt in the slightest was enough to make her cry. In the mornings after an attack on her friends or family, Veronica would weep at their wounds or tears.
She hated seeing people in pain.
"Veronica!" Tristan called, alerting Veronica and snapping her out of her depressed state. "Come here!"
