A new woman had just approached. This group was getting crowded. Perfect way to make new friends! They seemed pretty familiar with Eris already; upon thinking about it, they seemed familiar to Zadie as well - though she fought the intuition, trying to remember specifics. No, yeah, she actually knew the new girl. But from…

Meanwhile, Eris introduced them, or at least most of them, and Lexii (that’s her name!) commented on Zadie. She laughed; Lexii either knew her pretty well or was skilled at cold reading.

“Yeah, I’ve met Lexii before, actually. At Jack’s After-Midterms Party, fall semester last year. I had too much to drink that night, but who didn’t?”

Zadie made sure to look at everyone in the group, hoping to include Flowerpot especially. While looking around, she noticed a mysterious figure off in the distance. Were they wearing a gas mask? Very odd. Zadie hoped to avoid them when she would be grabbing her gear and boarding the ferry.

“Well, if you are hosting anything, I could… make some arrangements.” She smiled warmly. “You’ll have to show me where you’re staying once we get to the island. I think I’ve got all new roommates this year, and I don’t remember what dorm I’m in. I’ve gotten it written down somewhere in my car. I’ll have to get back to you on that one!”

What a varied bouquet this was becoming.

whilst her eyes scanned up and down Nikki's firm, flaunted form with no hint of embarrassment whatsoever. "You're fit," she stated, flashing a wolfish grin

"Thanks! I spend a lot of time outdoors." Nikki grinned, misinterpreting the use of the word "fit."

"You remind me of a nemophila!" she responded in turn with what was apparently a compliment.

Bluefirecan said :
“Okay, to alleviate some of this. Zadie, Lexii. Lexii, Flowerpot. Flowerpot, Zadie. And I’m Eris.”

"Oh! But who's Flowerpot ...?" Nikki wondered, looking around to find the mystery person. "OH!" she suddenly exclaimed, turning her eyes upward.

"That's right... I was trying to make the clovers grow four leaves with my brainwaves!" she cheerfully explained. "It isn't working yet." the girl concluded, counting the three leaves of each plant with the touch of her fingers.

"A party sounds fun!" Nikki agreed, clasping one hand over each handshake thus adding to the chaos and forcing all of them to hold hands longer. "It's great to meet all of you! And my name is Nikki by the way!"

"You know it," Lexii said to Eris on proposing they host the new year party, winking good-naturedly at her partner in crime. "Besides, I haven't been able to unwind in sooo long," she drawled out, and as she held the long 'o' note she refocused her gaze on the Flowerpotted girl, who she now knew to be named Nikki.

"I'd love to have your body," Lexii continued, taking the conversational opportunity to observe the woman's toned stomach once more. Then, making pronounced eye contact, said, "And I am definitely a nemophiliac," mistaking the word for nymphomaniac .

And then Nikki launched into a spiel about how she was trying to use her brainwaves to grow plants on her head. Lexii kept her face frozen in a pained smile, then quickly reevaluated her options and decided to instead change her tact towards the six foot Amazonian with rainbow leggings and rainbow-buttoned jacket, who seemed like a safer bet.

"Oh, you wouldn't believe the shit I did then," Lexii responded to the mentioning of the After Midterms Party, though who she did would have been a more accurate descriptor of the source of her embarrassment.

"But that'd be shit hot if you could hook us up," Lexii said in earnest. "Can always kip with me if you can't find your digs; I'm sure I got a queen-size bed this year," she offered, knowing for a fact that she'd gotten a room with only a single. Then Lexii frowned, her thick, black, heavily painted eyebrows scrunching up, as she saw Zadie observing something over Lexii's shoulder.

Turning, she saw the solidarity figure, clad head to toe in body obscuring clothing, with the face completely obscured by an honest-to-God gas mask. Lexii's jaw dropped in shock, mouth making a perfect O shape. Then she gasped out:

"Oh my god, that's so fucking metal!"

The Docks

The conversation was interrupted by someone with a bullhorn. "Attention students! Departure is in only a few minutes! Please begin boarding your designated ferries in a calm and orderly fashion!"

And so it began, with students filing into the ferries one by one, stopping only at the boarding ramp to show their student cards to the security. After verifying that they did in fact look like their picture, they were allowed onboard. Of course, the process was inevitably delayed somewhat by an unlucky few who didn't have their student card, or tried to get on the wrong boat, and spent far too much time begging or making excuses before finally taking the hint and turning back.

Luckily for everyone amidst the small group of eccentric college girls, despite not being first years, they had all somehow received passes that allowed them to board the first batch of ferries. Perhaps there weren't enough first years to fill them all, or perhaps it was an administration error, or perhaps they had influential parents who had somehow pulled some strings. Either way, the system worked out in their favour.

But not in the favour of a certain gasmask wearing girl, who would not be allowed onboard until she actually took off the mask and verified her identity. If she refused to do so, she would be left behind.

Then the twenty-minute voyage began.

----

The ferries arrived at the school with little fanfare, and the curious first years began to disembark, moving at a frustrating pace as they stopped or slowed down to take in the sights. Already guides were waiting to point them in the right direction.

From here the process would be rather straightforward. Find their dorm rooms, get settled in, buy their textbooks, and maybe attend the opening ceremony at the stadium that was to be held later that day.

Curiously enough, all four girls had the same dorm: Building 1, Floor 3, Room 13.

Eris chuckled, weaving her way out of the weird pretzel that had formed amongst the girls as the boats were called. Someone came by to help her with her luggage, considering this was a fancy expensive school and she was clearly a damsel in distress.

--

Getting off the docks would, theoretically, have been a problem for Eris, as the first-years bottlenecked the fuck out of the docks. Luckily for her, she was short and ruthless, so she aggressively pushed her way past all of the students blocking her path.

Time to see what dorm she was assig-

Oh god damn it.

Sable Hall, Floor 3, Room 13. She knew she should have gone to another school. Oh well. At least the first-years assigned to that hall would view the goth as a god and not get in her damn way again.

Eris headed to her dorm room, waiting for the Welcome Committee to deliver her luggage. While she waited, she slung her messenger bag into one of the bedrooms off the living room area. The goth got her laptop out and started typing away to pass the time until her stuff, including her textbooks, got delivered and her new roommates arrived.

Lexii, laden with a bag comically larger than herself on her back, and pulling a large suitcase behind her as well to boot, came to her dorm in Sable Hall and opened it, to find the eponymous Sable already there. Lexii wasn't surprised that her friend had managed to wrangle a dorm in the building named after her family, nor that Eris wasn't laden with any of her own luggage - someone whose family was that important to the college would have someone available to carry her stuff for her.

"Hey bitch," Lexii said as way of greeting, hauling her gear into the room and tossing it onto the floor unceremoniously. She immediately set about checking the rooms, to see if Eris Sable managed to get the best of the best when it came to lodgings at the college. Sadly, it seemed just as typical as the rest. They were still sharing one bathroom between four women. Lexii grimaced in anticipation of the hair she would be forced to unplug from the shower every third day.

Walking back into the main room, Lexii nodded her head back towards the bathroom. "I'll be doing a mad nude dash back to my room each morning, so try your best not to hang around the living room," she sent her friend a wolfish grin, then catapulted herself on top of a sofa. Sighing, relaxing, kicking off her leather boots and stretching out her feet, Lexii made sure she found comfort before continuing.

"God I want to hump the shit out of those girls," she said, waving a hand to indicate the people they had been speaking to near an hour ago. "I'm not sure which one, but I'm excited to find out." With that, she sighed in reverie, staring at the ceiling.

Lexii was the next woman to walk into the dorm’s door. Eris thanked the gods for letting Lexii be one of her roommates this semester. Realistically, this would be one of the only ways to confirm that the common area wouldn’t be plastered with preppy decorations constantly.

Eris’ mouth quirked up at the thought of Lexii sprinting through the dorm rooms nude.
“And what would you do, then, if I was in the living room in the mornings?”
the goth asked, a little too quietly for Lexii to register, particularly because she immediately began another line of thinking.

The goth picked her laptop off of her bed and moved to seat herself sideways in a recliner. She preferred to recline along the cushy armrests rather than the way the chair was meant to be used. Lexii commented on her rather blatant interest in the other girls they had just met.

Eris had to admit, she also appreciated the others. That said, she coyly shifted her eyes from her laptop screen to the girl flopped on the couch.
“It’s been what, an hour? And you’ve already decided your next conquests? And they’re girls you’ve barely even met, not someone you’ve gotten close to?”

Zadie was about to respond to Lexii when she was interrupted by the announcement and laughed as Eris was already peeling off. “Well, I’ll see you all on campus! Maybe see you tonight!” She waved as the group dispersed and she headed to her car. Eventually she lugged everything back over to the docks and was surprised to find herself admitted onto the first ferry. Walking up to the first group of around 5 she saw, she immediately got into a discussion with a couple of first years about the merits of local coffee shops and spicy junk food, and the twenty or so minute ride passed without her awareness.

-

Zadie looked at the slip of paper she had noted down of her dorm. Sable Hall, Floor 3, Room 13. Thinking about it, wasn’t Eris’s last name Sable? Of Sable Financial? Zadie banked with Sable Financial. Makes sense they would have a building named after them somewhere. Knowing her luck, there wouldn’t be an elevator.

She carried her several beaten duffel bags up several flights of stairs. Mostly stuff she absolutely needed for the first week. The rest of her furnishings were still in her car back at the mainland, and she would retrieve them over the weekend. One bag had most of her clothes and toiletries, another her tennis gear, and another her cooking and… chemistry gear. She was surprised she could carry it all. On her back was her backpack with her electronics, a few notebooks, and the chemistry textbook she had gotten for her chem class last year.

She had gotten the book used, and written in the margins were a lot of weird recipes with unusual ingredients. She hadn’t thought much of it at the time, until she tried out the recipe for a hangover cure out of pure desperation. Surprisingly enough, it had worked. Since then, she’d tried some of the more interesting sounding ones, but hadn’t seriously studied it much. It was useful enough to not immediately sell off to the next fool to try that course. But hey, she had passed, so it must have counted for something.

Eventually, she arrived at her door. She looked at her note. Wrong door. She slid over a room, and as she started to put her key in the door, she heard some voices coming from the other side. Sounds like she would get to meet her roommates sooner than later!

Inside were two people she already recognized. For a moment, she was completely surprised, but she quickly snapped back into focus. “Eris! Lexii! Well isn’t it cool to see you two here!” Zadie smiled as she considered which available room to pick. “How… coincidental! I’m just going to drop my stuff off here and head down to the bookstore. Trying to get there before the big rush. You can join me if you’d like, but I’m sure we’ll have lots of opportunities to get to know each other better over the coming months. I’ll probably be seeing you after the opening ceremony.” She picked the one closer to the door (it wasn’t by much) and dumped her bags unceremoniously on her bed. The space wasn’t much, but it was better than her room back home. She missed it here.

She headed back to the front door and waved. “See ya later!” she said, and headed down the hall.

She arrived at the bookstore in short order. Inside was cozy; the lights were dim and warm, and she could smell coffee and hot chocolate wafting in from the café next door. A small number of students hunting for their required textbooks, and there was a short line currently checking out. Zadie had managed to beat the rush.

Seeing no one she recognized or otherwise looked interested in a chat, she pulled out the note she’d written with this semester’s required textbooks. Hmm… A few books for her course of study with ridiculous names like Fundamentals of E-Mail Technology: 2nd Edition, a couple books whose dead authors’ names she couldn’t pronounce, a poetry anthology… Zadie mentally tallied up how much she expected the bill to be, and while she wasn’t great at mental arithmetic, she was already anticipating physical pain at the register. She grimaced a little and headed for the history section in search of The World from 1500-1800: A History. This would be a year.
