"Sir, are you certain you won't be going with any soldiers?" Inquired the guard.
I paused for a moment to contemplate the thought, but scattered it with a wave of my hand. I shook my head, then explained my reasoning to the soldier, "Look, if this is a trap I can get out of it. The rest of you may be very well trained, but I will not have any of you die for fear of my own life. If I must live to preserve the rest so be it, however this simple meeting does not warrant the use of soldiers."
The soldier stopped for a moment, probably thinking of something to convice me otherwise, but he gave up, and nodded in acknowledgement of my decision. He stayed quiet for the rest of the walk, but soon we had made it to the meeting place. I stopped him with a signal, then spoke, "Your journey stops here, and changes direction. My journey continues to the meeting place. Don't worry about me, I'll make it back in one piece."
The soldier nodded, but a trace of doubt was everpresent within his gaze. I was about to ask him what was troubling him, then he answered my question with another, "What happens if you don't come back? What would I tell the troops then?"
I stood silent for a moment, but did not answer. I looked away, and continued to the meeting place. The truth was...I didn't know what I would have them do if I died now. However, I could not pass up the opportunity to view my enemy up close. I'd seen him before, we knew eachother's various titles, but it seemed that neither of us had a name, or at the very least, no name which we could remember.
I stood before a wooden doorway. The door itself was lying on the ground. It was thin, an the center was missing, as if something had kicked it in. As I looked around more, scorch marks covered the walls, and a few dead bodies lie on the floor. I felt pangs of sadness at seeing them, but pushed them out of my thoughts. The only thing I could do now is make sure this never happened to anyone again.
