I gasped for air, feeling as if I was short of breath. Ridiculous, considering I no longer had the need for air. What disturbed me far more, was that I was lying on the ground, in utter darkness.

The darkness seemed to stretch infinitely, and no matter the attempt, I could not light the area. Puzzled, I started to contemplate the situation, struggling to figure out what had happened.

I contemplated the situation for what seemed like hours, reaching no conclusion. Stumped, I sat down and waited for something to happen. It didn't take long.

Corpses appeared from the darkness. I recognized all of them, chains around their necks, leading seemingly nowhere. I was perplexed by the sight, and continued to wait and see what would happen next.

My patience was rewarded with millions of eyes. Dark red, glowing eyes peered at me from the darkness, piercing my very soul. The eyes were not scary to me, but they did cause me to question my sanity a bit.

The eyes entered the corpses, taking them over, and causing them to stand at attention. They stood waiting for something to come by, and I heard the sound of footsteps. I directed my attention toward the assumed direction from which I believed the sounds originated, and I saw someone looking exactly like me, except his armor was an extremely dark shade of purple, and his hologram eyes were gray, sort of like static.

In his right hand he carried a long blade, dropping blood from the tip every tenth of a second. In his left hand, he carried the decapitated head of The Enemy. He walked toward me, in a somewhat menacing way.

"Who are you?" I inquired.

The strange look-a-like laughed maniacally, then he stepped close to me and stared. "ME? I...am...your...destiny."

I began to demand an explanation, but a voice called me. "Commander?" It called....

I woke...and looked around. I was deep in my work, and General Wilkins had called for my attention. "Oh...sorry Mr.Wilkins. I was dozing off for a moment. No idea why...." I said.

"That's nice and all Commander, but I have to ask...how long until this weapon of yours is complete?" Inquired John Wilkins.

I thought about it for a few moments, scanning my current notes and plans for any indication of time. After a short pause, I determined the approximate amount of time.

"Well, the weapon should be ready in about one or two days. I'm having trouble stabilizing my powers in a real thing. They seem to decay within a few seconds of exposure, destroying anything within their path. I just need to figure out how t-" I started, stopping midsentence.

"What's wrong Commander?" Asked Wilkins.

Wilkins was right to be worried, but his worry was for naught. I had just figured it out midsentence. I was concentrating so little energy into the virus, but what I needed was massive concentrations in order to combine the virus and my own energies.

I had to use the same technique when creating supportive creatures before, the ones that helped out in the war. However, those creatures required massive energy drains from myself, leaving me extremely exhausted afterward.

I would have to concentrate much larger amounts of energy in order to allow the energy to be inheritable from virus to virus, so this wouldn't be easy. I simply beckoned Wilkins to follow, and walked to the most recent prototype.

As soon as we were ready, I began the process. Huge amounts of shadow-like material spawned from nowhere, feeding into a point in the virus' coding. The part I had affected would be ever-present in the virus, so I made sure it was the randomizing code.

I began to feel fatigued as the process lingered on, but I continued. After several minutes, I simply collapsed to the floor, energy expended to the point where I had trouble getting up. John helped me to my feet, and I contained the virus in a special canister.

I handed the canister to John, arms shaking from the effort, "Give this to our last bomber. Tell him to deploy it in The Enemy's midst. Go." I said.

As John walked off, I wondered to myself, could this work? Could my theories about this virus truly work? Or would it fail, and end up condemning an entire race to extinction?

I pushed these thought out of my mind, looking at the nex schematics I was working on. It was a powerful magnetic armor, one I dubbed IWD armor. A new armor, for a new army. A new army for a new age. It almost seemed impossible that we could recover from this war, but if I ever completed my schematics, it looked verry likely that we could push The Enemy straight out of the universe, and eventually...slay him.

I pressed a button on the wall, bringing up a blue holo-screen, which showed the few communications we still had left, and selected the channel designated ARD-1-5. It opened up a direct link with out last fighter division, since we'd used up all of our multi-roles.

"Trien, Greg, Falz, Kita, and Rorik. Stop whatever you're doing and get in the air. You are to provide our last bomber with an escort. The bomber will be deploying a wonderweapon straight into The Enemy's midst. Are you all up to the task at hand?" I inquired.

"Yes sir," They answered, "Formation, tactics, and strategy?"

I thought a moment, taking into account limited support and maximum protection. I then decided that the fighters should take out as many aircraft as they could, providing a distraction from the incoming bomber.

"Formation 187-B-11, Tactics 76-A-R, and use the fifth strategy." I ordered.

"Strange decision for an escort mission, but we'll carry out your orders. They've been extremely effective so far." Stated Trein.

"Excellent. Good luck on the battlefield. Hopefully you'll make it back in one piece." I said.

"Don't worry about us Commander. We didn't make it out of Washington to die now." Stated Greg.

I remembered Washington. Worst battle of the war. We did our best to defend, but they simply overwhelmed us with sheer numbers, smashing through our defenses in a matter of minutes. I had to use a nuke.

I severed communications with the group, then changed the screen so that I could see the fight through ARD-1's pilot seat. The craft had yet to take off, so I rigged the system to tell me when Trein finally entered his aircraft.

Now it was just me and my schematics. All for the war, all too advanced for any scientist or engineer to assist me. IWD Armor, troop missiles with extremely high yields, plasma weapons, anything I thought could help us win the war.

I tested the weapons on what armor we could collect from Enemy troops who'd been slain by our artillery. On the armor side, I tested what Enemy weapons actually survived, which were extremely few in number, due to the highly destructive nature of the weapons.

As I walked around, I stepped on a fallen schematic. I stepped back to take a look at it, and was displeased. My current plasma weapon idea, a high powered plasma rifle, had some good results. However, the weapon only worked after shooting enemy armor for quite a long time.

My projectile based ideas were a similar failure, except for those to work, I required hand-held rail-guns, which were extremely heavy, making them impratical in our war. We needed a weapon that used a low amonut of material, while still having enough punch to take out The Enemy quick. I thought for a moment, contemplating the nature of The Enemy's armor, and came up with a solution.

I quickly drew up the schematics to my new rifle, a hybrid rifle. It combined the punching power of projectiles, while using heat and explosive effects from plasma. I just needed to craft the rifle, and test it out on The Enemy armor in the 'House'.

I opened up communications with the soldiers who had been giving me the equipment I needed, then asked them for the necessary materials, as well as several plasma canisters. Plasma canisters were an idea from the troops, using a highly pressurized tank, which detonated to take out a great number of The Enemy. They were more useful as storage units though.

Soon the materials were in my possession, and I thanked the soldiers who had delivered the materials to me. I prepared to get to work as the troops left, but then the holo-screen alerted me that something was going on. I called the troops down, telling them to watch the screen.

"Exactly what are we watching Commander? Some sort of war movie to boost morale?" Asked Johnathan.

"Well Mr. Lenias, it's not a war movie. This is a live-video feed from the cockpit of ARD-1. They're currently providing an escort mission for our very last bomber." I explained.

"What exactly are the escorting, Commander?" Inquired Kate.

"Hope, in the form of a biological wonder-weapon." I stated.

"You mean diseases actually affect The Enemy?" Inquired Johnathan.

"Yes...well...not exactly. Their armor normally protects them from the diseases we're all used to, but I've infused the disease with some of my power, so it will punch straigt through their armor, and spread infection amongst their armies, all the way back to the area from which they're producing them!" I elaborated.

"What if they quarantine the area?" Asked Kate.

"The Enemy responds to any loss of troops by sending in more troops. The Enemy is quite frankly, very stupid. He'll probably just run away from the planet once his lines are pushed back far enough." I responded.

"Will the disease affect us?" Asked Johnathan.

"Unfortunantely yes. We don't have any true DNA samples, since The Enemy seems to destroy its own DNA to keep us from releasing any DNA targeted viruses against them. So, I had to go off of default human DNA." I said.

The two soldiers nodded, and we watched the screen. ARD-1 flew at the head of the formation, so we couldn't see what the other fighters were doing at the moment. Nor could we see the bomber.

What we could see, was hundreds and hundreds of enemy aircraft approachig their position though. They were likely sent to destroy our aircraft before they could make it through.

"ARD-3 reporting in! We've got hundreds of Enemy fighters inbound!" Yelled a male's voice over the communications.

ARD-1 exhaled, slightly annoyed at his fellow pilot's distress, then pressed a key in his fighter, "Calm down. The Commander's plan will work. He's never failed us before."

"He said he'd stop the Enemy." Interrupted ARD-2.

"He didn't say when though. Could be tommorow, could be years from now. Heck, my great-grandchildren might even be fighting this war." Helped ARD-4.

"Everyone off the communications, and concentrate on the plan. We're to execute the commands outlined at the exact moments we need to, then break off." Ordered ARD-1.

"Understood sir." Grunted ARD-2-5.

A hundred Enemy fighters streaked through the air, heading for the ARD force in the air. Energy weapons glowed, ready to fire. Their strange design made them less manueverable than the ARD, but their sheer numbers completely outweighed this.

Without guiding the missiles, ARD 3 fired all of its hardpoint missiles to designated spots, and lit up quite a few Enemy fighters. ARD 1 and 2 did similar actions, while ARD 4 and 5 lit up Enemy fighters that were poised to hit the vulnerable fighter planes.

Although combat had just begun, the plan had to be followed, and the ARDs broke off, speeding off in two directions. The Enemy fighters turned to follow, but by then it was too late. Specialized Ground-To-Air flak missiles released dense debris into the air before the Fighters, and the sheer speed of the Enemy fighters caused the debris to tear right through them.

Nearly all of the Enemy fighters had been dispatched, and the few that were left were easily destroyed by the ARD fighters. In response to this act of defiance, The Enemy dispatched its entire airforce to destroy the ARDs, who fell back, dodging Enemy fire all the meanwhile.

What the enemy didn't see, was a bomber plane heading into their midst while the fighters distracted their airforce.

The ARDs had used up the last of their missiles, barring ARD 5, who was equipped with flak missiles. Strangely, the Commander's tactics had worked to the letter. Each manuever had been perfect for dodging Enemy fire, and causing their own fighters to slam into each other.

The Enemy crashed into eachother, fired on eachother, and were lit up by the Fighter planes. It seemed as if the Commander had known exactly what they were going to do. Obviously he didn't, but he did a pretty good job at making educated guesses.

However, even though the Enemy was taking casualties, the ammunition of ARD couldn't take everything out, whic the Commander's tactics took into account as well. ARD-1-4 made a series of manuevers designed to lure the enemy into a small cluster, then broke off as ARD-5's Flak missiles detonated in front of The Enemy.

The Flak Missiles tore through the hundreds of Enemy Fighters, which led to even more debris from The Enemy fighters themselves. The chain of collisions left only a dozen Enemy fighters left, which ARD dispatched with the last remnants of its ammunition.

At this point, the Commander's tactics merely told them to head back to base, since they couldn't be of use until they refilled their ammunition. Hopefully they'd be back in time for the next stage of the plan.

"This is LB-1, I'm over central Enemy territory. No signs of an airforce, and the Enemy never uses AA for some reason. Deploying the bomb." Said the bomber pilot over the communications.

A small capsule dropped out of the hatch, fell thousands of feet to the ground, and broke apart with barely a sound.

"Uh...Commander, you sure this bomb wasn't a dud?" Asked the bomber.

"If it exploded, you dropped the wrong bomb. Did it just crack open?" Inquired the Commander.

"It didn't explode." Answered the pilot.

"Excellent work Ms. Rodenda. Return to base. The ARD fighters should be back to make sure nothing follows you, though I think they have other concerns." Ordered the Commander.

Indeed the Commander was right. The ARD squadron did have some problems. However, these problems were directly due to the Enemy. They were a result of the virus that was just dropped on the Enemy. Some sort of strange creatures that were created as a result of the virus began to fire huge amounts of AA at the bomber.

"Take out that AA before it tears me up! I can't perform any tight turns in this thing!" Exclaimed Rodenda over the communications.

"ARD 3-6, take out those creatures with some of those flak missiles. They may not be suited for this task, but they're all we've got." Ordered ARD 1.

"Understood. Moving out." Stated ARD 3-6.

The ARD fighters quickly maneuvered through the strange AA fire, and deployed the missiles before returning to formation. The high density debris cut through the AA producing creatures, leaving them as little more than a mist on the ground. The ARD fighters didn't know whether or not their missiles worked, but the lack of AA fire seemed to confirm their success.

"Whew. That was a close one. Let's get back to base." Said Rodenda, relieved that she wouldn't die crashing to the ground in a bomber.

Back at the base, the Commander was off on another speech about how how the enemy would be defeated within a matter of months, and Wilkins was above the basement, at the second floor window, checking for signs of enemy activity.

"Look troops, all I'm saying is tha-" Started the Commander.

"Commander! We've got enemy aircraft! Some type of hovering vehicles. No signs of propulsion. They're coming closer to the safehouse!" Whispered Wilkins over the communications.

"Hold position, we're coming up from the basement! All of you, arm yourselves, I'll grab the schematics and arm the charges which will detonate the plasma canisters. I want you with Wilkins in thirty seconds. I expect us to be gone in two minutes or less." Said the Commander, already stashing schematics.

While the others rushed up the stairway, Wilkins was left to deal with the enemy floating assault craft. They appeared to be some sort of composite machines, consisting of several overlapping black plates. They were pyramid shaped, with the corners ending in longer narrow tips.

Wilkins placed his rifle on the floor, and grabbed a unguided rocket launcher from the table. It wasn't much, but it was the best he could do at this point and time. He sighted the leading craft, steadied his weapon, and let loose a missile. The launcher let loose a thundering projectile, which left a huge spray of thrust as it moved through the air.

It streaked further, moving further and further downward, but miraculously it struck the lead craft. It exploded, leaving a blooming explosion. The other craft spun and lost altitude from the shock wave, rapidly spiraling toward the ground. Wilkins thought he had solved it, reaching for his communications device, but suddenly the smoke where his missile had struck cleared.

The craft was not even scratched. It opened up, revealing a bright, glowing panel in the center. The individual plates floated around the panel, serving as some sort of means of locomotion. The other craft joined it, having stabilized their downfall.

Wilkins quickly loaded another missile, and fired at the panel. The missile streaked through the air, and the craft turned to look at it. They fired, causing it to detonate early. The shock wave busted the window inward, and sent Wilkins and his rifle crashing into the wall behind them.

Wilkins was wearing shock absorbing gear, so he managed to survive the explosion. His vision was blurred, and blackness was seeping into the center of his sight, but he grabbed his rifle and stood up. He shook his head, clearing his vision.

Just in time too. The craft fired bright beams at the house. Wilkins dropped to the floor, barely avoiding a lethal haircut. Debris from the top of the house rained down on him.

Wilkins waited for the storm of debris to cease, then went into a crouching position next to the window. He sighted the panel through his sight, and fired off a burst of bullets. The bullets either missed and bounced off of the craft's thick armor, or melted due to the sheer amount of heat coming off of the craft's glowing panel.

Wilkins lowered his rifle and grimaced, and quickly noticed the panel growing brighter than before. Assuming this to mean another wave of beams, Wilkins decided to jump out of the second story window. He landed, shifting his momentum into forward momentum at the time of landing, and rolled out of the way as the bottom of the second floor was destroyed in a blaze of glowing beams of death.

Wilkins recovered from the roll, now crouched and looking up at the enemy craft. Their panels glowed again, and Wilkins was forced to dash out of the way, as the beams destroyed the ground where he was standing. Wilkins took cover behind a rather large tree, but was force to leave his position as the tree caught on fire from the beams.

Wilkins had to think of a plan, and quick. The bullets had been ineffective thus far, he was rapidly running out of cover, and he couldn't run forever. He looked on his person to see that he had a pistol, and two grenades. He pulled one of the grenades off of his person, pulled the pin, and ran from cover. He zigzagged, feeling the deadly beams pass by his skin. After a few seconds he toss the grenade up into the air near the craft, jumped to where he knew the shrapnel would be blocked by their armor, and lay prone.

A microsecond afterward, the grenade detonated, and the craft smashed into the ground all around him. Wilkins stood, smiling proudly, and walked away, just in time to meet the other soldiers. "What took you guys so long?" Asked Wilkins.

"Nothing. Just a long flight of stairs." Responded Lenias.

"So...these are the craft?" Asked Fora, indicating the remains of the assault craft.
