The History of Runescape re-write:

Pre-First Age

Not much is known about what existed before the current universe we know. Seemingly there was at least one universe before ours, created by beings known to us as the Elder Gods. The Elder Gods create universes to generate Anima. One of the creatures from this previous universe were the Dragonkin, dragonesque beings of great intellect and power. Unfortunately on their home planet it appears something occured to one of the Elder Gods, Mah, which resulted in issues creating their final planet. This planet, Freneskae, was not a 'perfect' planet for Anima generation, and resulted in Mah being under-developed after being re-birthed.

The Plan:

With the aims established (power for Sliske, the return of Zaros as a universally praised God, trolling), how does this relate to what actually occured?

With Sliske's supreme power over shadow and illusion (as seen in The World Wakes and Missing, Presumed Death), and increased power with the Stone of Jas and Staff of Armadyl, Sliske conjures up a plan to fool the populace of Gielinor. Firstly in this plan, he must convince the populace that Guthix has died and that the Edicts have fallen.

The World Wakes:

To convince the world of Guthix's death, he will need as many witnesses as possible to spread the word, respectable beings from as many of the god's followings as possible. Along with them he needs his main pawn, the player. The individual who has gained the trust of kingdoms and whose strength exceeds almost all that opposes him.

Sliske happens upon an ancient Guthixian Temple (much like the one under Lumbridge) which contains a powerful artifact, one which allowed Guthix to gain power from the World Lifeforce. The guardians inside are easily controlled with the Stone, allowing Sliske to easily access it without concern, finding the artifact. With this, Sliske begins to formulate his final plan and thus chooses to reprogram the security system, adapting it slightly so as to adjust one single details; they are now guarding Guthix, not this artifact. He then gives Orlando Smith hints while in a disguise as to the location of a temple of 'great knowledge'. Orlando finds the Temple but is unable to enter surprisingly until Sliske's prime pawn, us, arrives and grants entry into the temple.

The scene is set to convince us of what this place must be, Guthix’s resting place. We are forced to look at articles of interest around the room, only then having the door open up for no apparent reason. Even Orlando considers it odd, a 'sign to move on!' Again, only we can lift the butterfly demonstrating that we're required to move on.
Everyone dies.

Orlando is killed, the one loose link in Sliske's plan, and Sliske appears ahead of us after watching us fight, already waiting. Out of character again Sliske decides to explain everything to us, from this being Guthix's resting place to the mechanics of what is occuring, explaining it by simply stating 'Oh, I just like educating a less fortunate being.'

In order to get the required audience for Guthix's fake death, Sliske replicates Guthix's transmission system on the surface to attract attention to the temple. He soon abandons us and leaves us to find our way to the main stage where he's waiting, his illusion prepared. We finally make it and witness Guthix's death to Sliske, confirming to us that the edicts should be gone. Notably, we are the only one present to see Guthix alive besides Sliske. Sliske could quite easily have just manipulated our perspective of statue and have the others come to see his ‘corpse’.

To ensure we play our role correctly, Sliske uses some of his memories from Guthix (gained through the Stone of Jas, as much as we gained memories from Saradomin when we touched the stone), to demonstrate why we should oppose gods such as Saradomin, and why we should seek to stop those that threaten Gielinor. Along with this, he throws in an excuse as to why we cannot be directly affected by the Gods (besides of course that they are to be illusions). Equally, this explains why Guthix simply allowed Sliske to kill him, which would be entirely against his desire to keep the gods removed from Gielinor, and for Sliske to gain power from him.

Sliske returns in the guise of Saradomin to demonstrate the return of the gods, and so the word will begin to spread.
Everyone dies.

Divination:

May Stormbrewer informs us that the colonies of memories are believed to be the 'remnants of Guthix's lifeforce', and similarly that the craters are holes into Gielinor's life force. According to May they are 'the same force that Guthix drew from to become so powerful.' However, this is not the first time we've encountered collections of life force linked with Guthix. Under the Tower of Life, there exists a dungeon of life energy, as Effigy claims:

We now have the ability to create life itself! We owe much to the power of Guthix, for without the life essence he left below ground, we would never have been able to bring this tower alive!

Clearly such pockets of life force existed prior to Guthix's supposed death and the life force of Gielinor itself can be used to gain power (presumably now with the use of the aforementioned artifact). Clearly such power would be useful to Sliske, as gaining as much power as possible without the use of the Stone would be preferable to avoid any unpleasant surprises from the Dragonkin. Sliske thus used Guthix's death as cause for opening up these sources of energy, siphoning the processed life energy the players 'return' to the craters for himself. In reality all we're doing is helping Sliske gain power without even realising it!
Everyone dies.

The Battle of Lumbridge:

Sliske was in need of a lot of life force prior to implementing some of his grander illusions and thus he put into motion the first 'conflict' of the gods; both raising awareness for their supposed return along with having followers of each god collect en masse energy for him. He approached groups of Zamorakian and Saradominist forces as their respective gods to recruited them, bringing both to Lumbridge to create the act. Not only does this ensure the more peaceful residents begin to see the negatives of these gods (as seen by talking to the individuals in Lumbridge), but the more fanatical followers slowly slaughter one another, leaving only those more likely to give up on their god’s ideals in hopes of peace.

With the point of Moia, she is likely real, however took part in a plan of Sliske's prior to his grander world-wide plan. Prior to inacting the return of the gods when he did not have the stone, he intended to fake the return of Zamorak.

His plan was to have Bilrach sense what he was looking before below the Daemonheim Peninsula (although the energy simply being a decoy of Sliske's), and once Bilrach found 'Zamorak', he would manipulate Bilrach to spread the word and gain power over the Zamorakian mahjarrat using Bilrach as his pawn. However, with the unexpected arrival of Moia, and the growing suspicions of Bilrach, he had Bilrach disposed of in favour of using Moia. When he later comes into ownership of the Stone of Jas and Staff of Armadyl, along with the original artifact in the Guthixian Temple, this turns out in his favour for his larger plan.

With the battle, he gains a lot of power through the life force collected, and makes his statement.
Everyone dies.

Missing, Presumed Death:

With the general population in the belief that the gods have returned, Sliske needs to set the scene for what is to come. Sliske needed to not only convince us of what is happening, but more importantly the gods which remained in Gielinor, such as Icthlarin and Brassica Prime. On a lighter note, Sliske still wishes to have his fun with us.

By kidnapping Death he lures both the player and Icthlarin to the island he has occupied (easily done without Armadyl actually having returned), and after messing with the player with some puzzles begins his grand performance between the gods. The only real individuals there are Sliske, the Dragonkin, Brassica Prime and Icthlarin. This is both done to set the scene of Sliske being in control of vast amounts of power (while still keeping secrets from us), as well as getting back at Icthlarin for the Second Age.

The individuals waiting outside have also been pitted against one another with Sliske's interventions, creating greater tension among the followers of the gods. The Zamorakian Mahjarrat appear to be considering abandoning Zamorak entirely already.

The Death of Chivalry:

Knowing of a powerful life-bringing artifact, Sliske seeks to make use of it, perhaps in making stronger, more powerful Wights (perhaps they Wand of Resurrection was even used as part of making the stronger Barrows Brothers?). Again, he manipulates the player in the guise of Saradomin to retrieve the Wand for him, intending to take the wand once it's location is found.

With the death of Owen, he sees his opportunity to test out his new toy. He either intends to make Owen warped for his own amusement, or simply due to himself not being a true god the wand does not work as intended. Regardless, he takes his new Wand along with a potential candidate for a Wight away, leaving the player. Once again we've been used to give Sliske even more power.

Armadyl vs Bandos:

With the masses of energy gained from BoL and general player training of Divination, Sliske is now able to create far grander and complex illusions than previously. He is now ready to start removing some of the gods, slowly approaching his final goal. In his playful manner he also allows adventurers to participate in one of their deaths, using competition to fuel energy collection. Bandos falls, along with some of his greater followers who were in the tower with him, leaving a rabble of followers uncertain as to where to go and what to do. Again the fanatics have slaughtered one another, leaving only the more relaxed individuals behind.

The Future:

So, where is this all going? Well, with the eventual plan being the return of Zaros, Sliske would logically intend to slowly kill off these fake gods until only a few remain, leaving most of the individuals godless. This also explains why Jagex intend to keep Zaros strictly as quest content, not allowing for Zaros to be killed off like Bandos has been.

This is where Tuska comes in. With the followers of dead gods now believing they are alone, they'll be searching for a new being to protect them both from the other gods and their followers. When the illusion of Tuska arrives, in order to show her immense strength it would seem logical for the remaining illusions of gods to attempt to stop her and die trying.

But then the real Zaros steps in and fells her in a single spell, with an audience of thousands. In this moment Zaros is believed the last remaining god as well as the protector of Gielinor. Thus Zaros would become the one god of Gielinor and able to truly rule as he seeks fit with none to challenge him.

And so, the Sixth Age never occured, the Edicts remained and Guthix continue to live
Everyone dies.
