Krystal gaped. “Prisoner? What do you mean, ‘prisoner’?” Her voice shook.
Rivera put her hands on her hips. “We captured him.”
“Who’s ‘we’?” pressed Lil.
Kzahar put a hand on her arm. “Look, can you just tell us how this happened? Start at the beginning.”
“We don’t have time for that!” Krystal wailed. She rushed toward Rivera, grabbing her shoulders. “Tell me where he went!”
Rivera shoved her off and stepped back, hissing contemptuously, “If I knew, do you really think I’d be standing here talking to you? Believe me, little girl, I have better things to do.*
Krystal snarled wordlessly and drew one of her swords, just as Rivera unslung her bow and knocked it. The two faced each other warily for a moment, then Krystal charged. Maston lunged forward just in time to stop her, spinning the both of them away as fletching sprouted from the ground inches away. “Stop!” Adrian bellowed. Krystal wriggled away from Maston and jumped up. Arwing quickly pulled her back, knocking the sword out of her hands.
“Just tell us how he became your prisoner. Please,” she asked.
Rivera rolled her eyes. “I don’t have to tell you anything,” she replied as she walked to pick up the arrow from the ground. Then she began climbing into the saddle. “Good luck with everything.”
“Wait!” Krystal had wrestled free of Arwing, and now she ran forward. “Please, Rivera. I’m sorry I attacked you. It’s just – I’m so worried about him. I haven’t seen him in days. All I want is to know is what happened to him. If he’s out there and needs our help, we need to know.” Her voice cracked slightly. “Can’t you understand? I need to know he’s okay. I need to find him.”

Rivera looked at the tears running down Krystal’* cheeks during this heartfelt plea and sighed. So the woman cared, about as much as Bond did. How could she refuse? She slid back down from the saddle. “All right,” she conceded, “If you help me find him.”
“We can’t –“ Maston began, but Krystal interrupted, “Of course!”
“Krystal!” he exclaimed. “We’ve been over this! We can’t go looking for him, we have to get to Varrock! Every day we waste is one more that the plague consumes the country, and Issavan makes everything worse.”
Rivera smiled. “I think I can help you. Help me find him, and my people’s strength is yours.” Father would be furious, but it did*’t matter. It was time she took control, if she was truly meant to be queen.
“Your people?”
“We’re…outlaws. Bandits. Revolutionaries.” She saw their eyes widen at this. “Look, I’ve been on the road awhile. Can we go somewhere more comfortable to talk?”
“Come to our camp,” the scholar invited, but cast a searching glance at Maston. The muscular man nodded stiffly. Interesting politics within this group, Rivera thought to herself, as she followed them back through the trees, leading her horse. It was just as Bond had described. Though most of them chafed against it, somehow they all deferred to Maston’* authority.
Storm whinnied loudly after a moment, and she heard answering whickers from the group’s horses as they entered the camp. Bedrolls were lain out around a banked fire, with the horses tied to trees around the edges. She dropped Storm’s reins and let him wander off to explore the other animals. Then she sat with the others in a rough circle around the fire.

There was a long silence as she decided where to begin. Then she spoke. “As I said, we’re revolutionaries. I am descended from the royal line of the Empire; from the king Issavan’s grandfather usurped. My father and I have gathered quite a following – we live underground, with help from the dwarves we expanded the old HAM hideouts. Bond called it an underground city, but it** more of a garrison, or fort, and we spend most of our time raiding from the guards. We’ve wanted to make an attack on Issavan but never quite found the right plan…but I believe your situation may aid us in that. But that isn’t important right now – Bond is.
“Our scouts reported a troop approaching with a prisoner. We surrounded them, as usual, but as we were about to attack, their captain realized who Bond was. He’d seen me and thought I was…well, you, Krystal.” Krystal flinched and her eyes welled with tears again. “Somehow the man put it together. Then we attacked, and rescued Bond, as we usually do with their prisoners. But my father…who is really in charge, well he decided we had to keep Bond, and ransom him. He’d be worth a mighty bit to all parties. But he trusted me enough to tell me everything, about what you have to do. My Father wanted to ransom him to you once you took control. Bond begged me to help you, and at first I refused.”
“Why?” Maston demanded harshly.
“Because the thought of Issavan’s son remaining on the throne is repulsive,” she snapped back. . “Especially when I should sit there. But,” she continued, as he opened his mouth to speak, “I think that we should help anyway. Father is still against it, but I believe we can find some compromise once this ‘Corynn’ has taken away the plague. She may not know about us. I don’t care what Father thinks any more, the people will follow me.

"So, anyways…Bond was getting better – he was injured by the guards, and got sick, all his cuts were infected – and I took him out to explore the caves. I let him go outside. I-I thought it would make him happy. He must have heard something, because he started acting different.”
“When?” Krystal asked suddenly.
Rivera shrugged. “Two days ago? Why?”
Lil lit up with recognition. “When you were yelling –“
“--He heard me!” Krystal finished. “Oh, but what happened to him, if he was coming for us?”
“He asked to go back into the stables, which has the exit. Then he knocked me out. I woke up hours later, and Father sent me to track him, but I lost his prints in the rain. I don’t know where he went,” Rivera finished.
Adrian leaned forward. “So what do we do now? Do we search?”
“We have to!” Krystal exclaimed.
“No. Rivera helps us take Varrock first.” Maston glared at her.
“By the time that happens, he might be dead,” Rivera snapped coldly. “He’s still sick.”
“If we wait any longer, other people will be dead,” he retorted.
Silence fell heavily across the scene. No one knew how to respond. Then, Arwing exclaimed, “Split up!” Everyone turned to stare. “Look. It would take time for Rivera to go, get her soldiers, and come back. We have a plan to take Varrock anyways, by ourselves, without extra help. So, we go through with it. Krystal can go with Rivera, and they can search on the way back, and meet us in Varrock. Issavan will be dead by then, and hopefully you’ll have Bond.”
Maston grinned at her. “That might work.” Then he looked at Krystal and Rivera. Krystal was nodding her agreement, but Rivera hesitated. Traveling with this lovesick woman? That was her last choice. But it was the only way. After a moment, she nodded.
