~*~*~*~ Chapter 4 ~*~*~*~
Bond sipped at the glass of water and contined, “So, after the pirates attacked we all just went back downstairs, I was with Krystal, telling her what happened.”
“But…Maston? – knew that…Emmaris was up to something, right?” Rivera questioned. She was still unsure of some of the names, but getting better.
Bond nodded. “He called him on it, and Emmaris admitted that the contest was supposed to destroy us…Having been found out, he agreed to sail for Sarim when the storm was over. But then Maston saw Amodiel doing something, some kind of magic, I don’t know what – the mage said he was helping us stay on course. Maston agreed and went downstairs to talk to Arwing – his…girlfriend, you could say. I don’t really know what’s up with them – anyway, so then I guess they were talking, and realized that Amodiel works for the government – they figured he was in on the plot.
“Maston then realized, this fellow who wanted us dead was guiding the ship – was he REALLY going to take us back to Port Sarim? No. So Maston got me, Krystal, and Adrian – he’s this giant guy, monster fighter – to go confront him. Arwing didn’t come, she was still really beat up from her fight against Arvenous.”
He paused to sip at the water again. With the receding pain in his back, he felt stronger, but talking this much was still an effort. “So what happened?” pressed Rivera, engrossed in the story.
“He pretty much laughed in our faces. We attacked him, but…he was untouchable. He told us that it was too late and teleported out. I turned around…and…” he gulped at the memory. “The storm began to recede, I think he’d been controlling it, and some of the clouds faded…we could see the stars again. Then it was all blotted out, just washed away. I thought it was more clouds…I heard thunder…then there was a flash of lightning, and you could just see it all…” he broke off, choking on a sob.

“See what?”
“A – a wall of water. Hundreds of feet high. It just*it engulfed the sky, towered over us…this giant wall of blue, rushing towards us.” Rivera gasped, caught in the powerful image his words painted. “Each second it came closer and closer. Maston…he ran to be with Arwing. I think I saw Adrian dive overboard. I was with Krystal…It just * it hit me, so suddenly – that I was going to – to die.” Tears trailed slowly down his cheeks, and he made no move to wipe them away. “I was afraid. But Krystal, she – she promised me – promised we’d be together – no matter what happened – promised she’d find me, she promised…” He sobbed harder, and Rivera*s heart surged with pity for him.
“But you survived,” she said after a moment, tentatively.
“Next thing I knew, Maston was waking me up. Me and Krystal, Gods alone know how, we made it. We were on this island. We searched the ship, got everyone out…Then Emmaris announced he knew where we were.”
“What? Was it Karamja?”
“No. It was some island…off the map, undiscovered, but he’d found it in an expedition with some other of Issavan’s scholars. He warned us it was inhabited with these aggressive natives – and confessed that it was the plan all along to crash us on the island, and have us be killed wiping out these natives – so that he could build a city on there,” Bond spat with disgust. He remembered how Maston had coaxed the story out of him, how they had all threatened the pitiful scholar until he gave them answers, and the horrible realization of how they’d been tricked, over and over again.
“Why couldn’t he send his own soldiers? Surely they’d have more luck than a few warriors, however experienced?” Rivera questioned.
“He didn’* want to waste them. He needed someone expendable. Because of the plague.”

“That’s where it came from?” she exclaimed. “These natives?”
“I’ll get there,” he assured us. “We know now where it’s from – I’m getting to that. Emmaris promised he knew a way to get to an outpost, where we could get supplies and find a way off. He swore he’d help us go home and destroy Issavan. So off we went. We…we encountered the natives not far in…Radium, and a servant girl – they died…and Regis –“
“Duke Regis? From Ardounge?”
“He was on the ship,” Bond explained, then continued brokenly, “He was – they took him away. Endalin, this warrior who’d been watching the contest, he followed him, and we followed Endalin. We found their camp – at noon – Oh, Gods…” he was weeping again, head curled against his chest, eyes squeezed shut as if that could stop the memories. But they raged behind his eyelids, unbreakable, the image of Regis’ body arcing against the stake where they held him as they carved a gaping hole in his chest, and ripped out his heart. The screams rang in his ears and he cried out himself in echo.
“Prisoner?” Then, more gently, “Bond?”
Slowly, his eyes opened. He blinked and looked carefully around, as when he had first awoken after his capture, as though he was seeing the room for the first time. He let out a shuddering sigh and groped at his chest, to reassure himself that he was whole, that he was out of the powerful grip of the memory.
“R-ritual sac-sacrifice,” he rasped after a moment. “C-c-cannibals. R-Re-Regis, and Endalin…Gods,” he croaked again.
“I’m so sorry,” whispered Rivera hoarsely, as if she could see herself what had transpired that day in the jungle. “I had no idea…”

Bond took a few deep breaths, face scrunched in agony, but slowly the muscles relaxed and he had control back. Forcing the words out, he continued, “We ran away…then Gyron – another servant…he started acting weird. He was all distracted, then he lashed out at his wife, then he fainted. Emmaris told us it was the plague.” Rivera nodded to herself, recognizing the first symptoms of the deadly disease. “Maston was furious that we hadn’t been warned before, but Emmaris had just hoped none of us would catch it. Anyway, the natives attacked us again, took away more of the servants…then Kzahar was scouting ahead, and he found this hidden grove.
“When we got there, he told us to go to sleep. He had heard a voice, he said. We all thought he was crazy, but humored him, and then when we woke up, we heard it too. Then a woman appeared.” He heard Rivera*s sharp intake of breath, and continued, “She just walked out of thin air. Over this pool, it was this weird pool of purple water – some liquid…She said her name was Corynn, and she was the goddess of the natives – she called them the Kzyr-shan.”
“What? A Goddess?” Rivera cried out in shock.
“I know it sounds crazy,” Bond admitted. “And it’s not even the best part. Corynn told us that SHE created the plague.”
“Oh!”

“Oh!”
“She created it to punish Issavan for wanting to destroy her people and desecrating her land. She promised us that she’d call off her natives from attacking us, help us get home, and then end the plague if we helped her.”
“She wanted you to kill Issavan?” Rivera guessed.
“Yes. But not just that. She’s got a serious vendetta against him, and swore that she’d never let another like him on the throne, lest they pick up where he left off against her island. Therefore, we have been tasked to wipe out his family, except for his second son, which she believes to be different, and thinks that under our influence he can be a good king.”
“His ENTIRE family?” she echoed.
“Yes. And that’s why you have to let me go, Rivera! That’s why you should help us! We need everyone we can get, without exposing ourselves of course, to hunt down his last blood relatives, and at the same time keep control in Varrock. We don’t have enough people, there’s only eight of us. With your help we could easily wrest control of the palace, close off the exits of the other cities…Rivera, you have to help me – help us!”
She was silent for a long moment. His wild blue eyes, red-tinged with sickness, gazed unblinking at her, full of hope and pleading. She had to agree, she had to help him, didn’t she?
But then Rivera replied, coldly, “No. This changes nothing, prisoner.”

Not sure if I posted on TD*...but here goes
I'm planning on writing a story of authors banding together to fight off Wordless beasts, and would like you to be in it. Patriot5 thought of the idea, and we both thought that you would make an excellent contribution to the story, no matter how random or wierd it may seem.
So, if you would like to be in it or *kindly* decline, please reply.
Thanks.
