Lil stared straight between the horse’s pointed ears, over a tufty mane, at the cobblestone road straight in front of her. She did not look to either side, where arms like tree trunks wrapped around her waist, or behind her where a giant man pressed up against her back.
Adrian himself could barely fit in the saddle. Lil and Adrian was an even tighter squeeze. She was nestled uncomfortably in his lap, his arms pressuring her sides as he held the reins. He kept making jokes, to try and end the awkward silences, but it only made things worse. She was dwarfed by him, a full two feet shorter, and desperately needed to be out of the saddle, away from his crushing presence. She wished she was anywhere but there…’Even back in the tournament?’ she asked herself dryly. That gave her pause.
*It’s all for Bond,’ she told herself. She personally hadn’t really known Bond, but he seemed nice enough, and Krystal had been hit hard by his capture. She imagined if it had been Kzahar that had been taken, and that strengthened her resolve. Still, she felt confined, pressed in the saddle, with the forest on either side.
“Look, the road’s just up there,” rumbled Adrian.
She let out a long sigh of relief. At least there would be open air. Now if she could just breathe…
“If they traveled on the stones, it might be hard to pick up a trail,” she began uncertainly.
Adrian bit his lip. He wasn’t much of a tracker himself, and didn’t know how to respond. Lil thought aloud, “Maybe, once we get to the fork in the road, we can travel a bit down each, try and see which way they went. I just don’t know what to look for.”
“I’m sure we’ll find a sign,” he assured her.
