Lil stared straight between the horse’s pointed ears, over a tufty mane, at the cobblestone road straight in front of her. She did not look to either side, where arms like tree trunks wrapped around her waist, or behind her where a giant man pressed up against her back.
Adrian himself could barely fit in the saddle. Lil and Adrian was an even tighter squeeze. She was nestled uncomfortably in his lap, his arms pressuring her sides as he held the reins. He kept making jokes, to try and end the awkward silences, but it only made things worse. She was dwarfed by him, a full two feet shorter, and desperately needed to be out of the saddle, away from his crushing presence. She wished she was anywhere but there…’Even back in the tournament?’ she asked herself dryly. That gave her pause.
*It’s all for Bond,’ she told herself. She personally hadn’t really known Bond, but he seemed nice enough, and Krystal had been hit hard by his capture. She imagined if it had been Kzahar that had been taken, and that strengthened her resolve. Still, she felt confined, pressed in the saddle, with the forest on either side.
“Look, the road’s just up there,” rumbled Adrian.
She let out a long sigh of relief. At least there would be open air. Now if she could just breathe…
“If they traveled on the stones, it might be hard to pick up a trail,” she began uncertainly.
Adrian bit his lip. He wasn’t much of a tracker himself, and didn’t know how to respond. Lil thought aloud, “Maybe, once we get to the fork in the road, we can travel a bit down each, try and see which way they went. I just don’t know what to look for.”
“I’m sure we’ll find a sign,” he assured her.

As they exited the wood, Adrian turned their steed up the road away from Port Sarim. He urged the weary horse into a trot, eyeing the sun over his shoulder. It hung low in the sky over the distant town and had begun to drop into the western horizon. “We’ll need to stop soon.”
“It’d be nice to know which way before nightfall. That way, we might ride some in the moonlight, and perhaps catch up,” Lil replied. Adrian nodded wordlessly.
They reached the fork just as the reds and yellows faded to navy blue in the sky. “Let’s look around,” suggested Adrian. Suddenly the weight on her back vanished, and Lil sagged backwards, almost falling from the saddle. Adrian reached across to steady her. “Sorry,” he mumbled with a shy smile.
“Don’t worry about it,” she stammered, flushing. Then she was flying through the air, and Adrian dropped her gently onto the stones beside him.
“I’ll – I’ll check the west road, you check the east road.” She strode quickly away, enjoying the cool night air as it rushed through her lungs. Her eyes scrutinized each cobblestone, although she didn’t know quite what to look for. It was a hopeless mission, she knew, but she couldn’t bring herself to admit it. On the road, there was no way to tell if they’d passed.
All of a sudden, Adrian let out a yelp of surprise. She turned and jogged to him. He squatted by a tall tree, running his fingers along the trunk. When she approached, he held up something in his other hand. Up close, she realized it was a scrap of cloth.
“Can you make a torch, or a fire?” He proffered a long stick.
As flint struck stone for the third time, the spark caught, and red-orange blossomed. She took the stick as he lifted the cloth into the flickering light. “Blue…” she breathed. “Bond’s shirt was blue.”

He grabbed the torch from her hands and held it close to the tree. Once more, he trailed his thick fingers down the bark. “See it?”
“Blood.”
“They hurt him…”
“This is the east road,” Lil mused. “Maston said they’re taking him to a ‘big city’. Lumbridge, you think?” Adrian went rigid. “What?” she pressed.
*Not Lumbridge, Lil,” he rumbled. “Varrock. They’re taking Bond to see the king.”
