It took several minutes for the beautiful grey wolf to finally free her Beta's leg, and by that time the fire was almost on top of them. Supporting Azure with her shoulder, the Alpha led her son away from certain death, towards the east, towards the territory where their pack would be waiting. Fortune was with them, as the fire did not catch up on the slow-going pair. They reached the Eastern Brook long before the flames did.
By now Azure was supporting Zanix almost as much as she was supporting him. Every few steps the female would cough, and their traveling became painfully slower. As soon as they hit the shore on the other side of the shrivelled up stream, the pair collapsed. Azure’s leg was broken, cut, and badly burned. Zanix was dying of smoke inhalation.
With one look, Azure knew. Closing his eyes tightly, he held back bitter tears.
”Why, Zanix? Why did you save me instead of yourself? You have so much experience leading… You could’ve found a new Beta. The pack would’ve been better off with your experience after this devastation. So why did you give it all up to save me?”
Zanix fixed her ice blue gaze on the young wolf and offered a sad smile.
”Azure, long ago, a friend who was very dear to me told me something. He’d just made a very tough decision, too, you see. He said to me, ‘Decisions will always be made. It is only afterwards we look back to see, was it the right choice?’. Azure, looking back, I see that in my life many decisions were made. The decision to take you in as my son. The decision to lead the pack after Bloodwolf’s death, even though they believed I was too frail. The decision, even after realizing we could not both survive, to save you anyway, even if it cost me my life. We always make decisions, Azure. Always. And it is only afterwards we will know if they were the right choices. Looking back now, at all of those decisions, I know the answer. Yes, they were the right decisions."
