NOTE TO READERS: This is a sequel to my first short story: The fall of Ysmora.
I will summarize the story briefly but if you want to read it for yourself check it out.
=================================================================
The fall of Ysmora follows the viewpoints of three characters, Sir Guyard Valten, Ser Ivon, and Scout Meivar. The story begins with Sir Guyard entering the city of Ysmora with a garrison of 4,000 men sent to help hold the city against recent barbarian raids, later however we learn that Sir Guyards lord had been sending small attacks against the city so the lord of Ysmora, Lord Silmi, would ask for help. Once in, Guyard, Ivon, And Orri take over the city. Guyard sends Ivon with a scout team to find a magical object that lord silmi had been looking for, they were also to locate lord Silmi's garrison of men that had been deployed to find it. Instead Ivon and his men are cought by a goblin raiding party in the mountains, Meivar escapes with a knight named sir Valtir, Ivon, Scout Halmin, and sir Einos are taken captive, the rest die. Ivon, halmin, and Einos are all killed in a goblin arena but Meivar makes it back to Ysmora. Once in Ysmora the city is overrun by demonically possessed corpses, (I imply that it is the garrison ivon was sent to find). It ends with all the main characters being executed.
===============================================================
This story takes place just as news of Ysmora reaches the main characters liege lord. Also please note that I have a lot to get through with this tale, and I will have another sequel written when im done with this one, but being that I have so much to do with it i had to write chapters a bit shorter and move the story at a bit quicker pace than I would like, so when reading keep that in mind.

MAP KEY

/\/\/\: Mountains
l l: Bridge
o: Village/town
[]: City
~~~: Water
lllllllll : Forest
:::::: : plains/hills
Blank area: The blank area to the far northeast signify the edge of the civilized lands, lands exist beyond that point but they are overwhelmed by goblin tribes, dragons, draugr's, etc.
When looking at the map, in the forested area i put several villages without names, this is just to signify that too many villages inhabit the area to name them all on the map.
This story will be a bit longer than my first one and also follows multiple viewpoints which i refer to as POV, (point of view). When the characters viewpoints switch i will give a note saying who it is following to prevent confusion.
The story will start six days after the events of: The fall of Ysmora when the lord of Ornica receives the news from a soldier who escaped the city just as the final assault was initiated on the city.
Also note that this takes place in what is sort of my view of a specific area of the wilderness before the god wars.
PROLOGUE:
Tolvar couldn't believe his eyes. The men came from everywhere and nowhere all at once. He ran along the battlements quicker than he knew he could until he found the bells. He yanked the strings down once, then twice, then he bit his lip and closed his eyes and pulled the third time. The bells icy melody rung hollow throughout the courtyard. It took a moment to hear Orri's booming voice yelling commands. Soon he saw men running along the battlements, He himself ran to a murder hole and waited. It took no time at all for the gates to burst open, just when he saw the first figure moving below him he tipped his oil barrel and spilled boiling black oil over the man.
The oil engulfed him only... He kept walking as if it didn't phase him. (Gods be good... We cant do it...) "We cant do it" he mumbled to himself under his breath, then again louder "We can't do it!". Robyk was firing his arrows at the invaders, they stuck in them but they still kept walking. (These are no men. These are beasts) he thought, and when the first one screeched its blood curdling screech his bladder let go. His leather chaps were soaked, even more than they had been due to the rain.
The things killed men wielding strength like nothing human. They swung their axes breaking stone yet the axes came out unscathed. He felt tears welling in his eyes but he wiped his face with the back of his hand and dried them. Now the beasts were on the battlements. He drew his short sword and held it up, as if he was actually ready to use it. When one of the things found him he dropped it instantly, no longer finding the strength to hold it. The thing before him had grey skin, a broken jaw, an arrow in its eye, and half a spear jutting through its stomach.
It felt like an eternity watching the monster come toward him until he saw a boulder of a fist coming for him, the back of the things hand touched his chest and he fell
from the battlements and into the courtyard. Everything was black for a second but when he opened his eyes there was nothing but corpses and smoke and ash. The beasts were gone, at least that he could see. He stood and nearly fell, so he grabbed a spear to help support his weight.
He limped up to the castle steps and took his time climbing them, but when he reached the top... Orri was sprawled out, his guts laying about him, his arms and legs torn from his body. Some poor scout was laying on his side with a spear stuck in him and his torso almost removed from the shoulder to the waste. And sir Guyard was only recognizable because of the red crests on his shoulders and arms.
Tolvar could hear... Things inside the hall. Screeches and moans. Howls and hollow laughter. He nearly wet himself again at the thought of entering. Instead he picked up Guyards longsword, Ember, and limped as fast as he could down the castle steps.
He limped over the dry oil at the gate and started walking through the rain headed south, he knew that Devon was close by, if he could reach it he may survive.
All day he limped, he had strapped Guyards sword around his belt, but other than that he did not stop until well after dark. His shoes had filled with water and formed blisters on his feet, he wanted nothing more than to dry off. But the only solace he could find was a tree that had three branches hanging low to keep the rain off of him for the most part. He was awake for several hours under his tree, when his eyes finally did close he saw nothing but the seven foot monsters that had invaded Ysmora.
He woke several times throughout the night feeling his ribs ache and his leg throb. When finally morning came he couldn't bare the idea of sleep any longer and he set out. Tolvar war growing hungry by the third day, though he no longer needed the spear to help him walk he had no food or water with him. (I don't remember the village being this far... (Did I get turned around?) he thought warily.
On the fourth day he came across a man riding slowly on a horse, headed south. The horse had several satchels about its saddle, one had to have contained food. The man stopped suddenly and dropped off of his horse, the horse stayed still as the man unlaced his breeches to make his water. Tolvar felt his hand moving the hilt of his new blade. Ember's hilt was warm to the touch, maybe that was just his blood getting hot.
His vision almost blurred with his adrenaline, his heart started pumping so fast and loud he could hear it. He moved from the bushes where he was hiding and slowly inched toward the man, the rain was pounding as it had been doing for days, but this man was fortunate enough to have a cloak and hood to stay dry and warm. (I'll take those too) he thought. He got up to the man slowly, and before he knew it he grabbed the man and knocked him to the ground.
When the mans hood fell off Tolvar saw familiar brown eyes and short brown hair. "Tolvar..." The man said. "Robyk?" Asked Tolvar. The man nodded. Tolvar sheathed his sword and helped Robyk stand up. "How did you survive?" asked Tolvar who felt more confused and happy than he had in ages. "I exited through the cellar just as the... Just as they made it to the castle. Everyone who died bought me some time." Robyk said ashamed. "I have been looking for Devon but I can't find it, there will be time to catch up Robyk but I'm starving to death here." Robyk laughed. "Devon is the other way friend, you have passed it, but I have some food for you, some wine too if you want it." he said. Tolvar did want it.
Chapter one: Robyk
After three days more marching west, they reached Ornica. The city was the oldest one on the map and it showed. Its walls were a canvas covered in cracks and holes and old stains barely visible now. The gates were open as of now due to an increase n trade of late so the two men got in no problem. "Tolvar you must present lord Roham with the news of Ysmora, I need to speak to someone." Robyk said in a tone that offered no debate. Then Robyk strode off down one of the old streets. They were all old if truth be told, and overgrown with moss and ivy, but it gave the city a kind of scenic beauty.
He marched past people giving him strange sideways looks due to his mismatched clothing, until he found it. A two story stone house, the front overgrown with weeds and ivy so thick you couldn't see the stone walls underneath it. He pulled the iron ring on the door and smacked it against the wood twice and waited. After a moment a woman opened the door dressed in a rough spun gown and apron, she had clearly been working hard today but past the sweat and tan she still had beautiful blue eyes and blonde hair.
"Aveline my sweet" Rodyk said so happily he sounded sad The girl smiled brightly and embraced him saying "Rod..." she almost sounded as if she would cry. "Hush" Rodyk said and he sat their hugging her tightly. "I've... Rodyk I've missed you." He kissed her. "I know. But I'm back now and Roham has another thing coming if he thinks im going back to fight for him again." His wife looked guilty. "What troubles you my dear?" He asked. "I'm... With child." She could not look him in the eye. "Well... Why would that trouble you? It is great news!" He said overcome with joy. "It is not your child." Rodyk waited a moment to make sure he heard her correctly, then he let go of her.
"A month past when you left on your march, a guardsmen..." Tears welled up in her eyes he could see.
Robyk thought on that a moment. "What was his name?" He asked bluntly. "I... Don't know. His helm and pauldrons were crested with red ridges." Robyk nodded slowly. "I do not wish to embark on some bloody quest yet. I wish to visit with you a while." But before he could step inside, the bells tolled four times. "An execution." Aveline, his wife, said. "Wait here... I will be back in a moment." Said Robyk walking off. (Did Tolvar realize what would happen if he told Roham we ran?) he thought awkwardly turning off the street to the city square.
The gallows were wooden, but supported by Iron to keep them standing when the rot had taken them. A prisoner in a leather jerkin and chaps stood on them with a noose about his neck. His head was bowed and he appeared to be crying. Robyk drew in closer. "This man, is accused of the highest of crimes. Desertion of the lords army in times of war." The man read off a scroll of paper. "His lordship, Luthor Roham on this day sentences you, Tolvar Aviik, to die. Is there anything you wish to say Tolvar?" The man folded up the scroll.
Tolvar tried to speak but fear had apparantly overcome him and all he could muster was "I...So..." He cried a little. "Creatures...". The executioner waited until he was done mumbling, then pulled a lever, dropping Tolvar and snapping his neck, he struggled for a moment after he fell but it was in vain, he died shortly after. Robyk bowed his head and mumbled a short prayer for his friend.
The way home seemed shorter now, and when he found his wife inside they spent no time talking but embraced each other instantly. "We have been too long apart", Said Robyk unlacing his breeches. "I agree." his wife said unlacing her rough spun clothing. He was ready by the time they were done with their clothing, and he took her right there on the floor, It was the only joy he had experienced for ages.
When the morning came he rolled out of the bed. "Don't leave." Aveline said looking at him. Her blue eyes staring deep into his it was hard to refuse her, so he didn't. He got back into bed with her and he took her again. "I must go now my sweet, but I will return to you have no fear." He said as he got up and clothed himself in his plain leather clothing. She stood next to him and kissed him once more before allowing him to eat, shave off his beard, and take his leave.
=================================================================
Chapter two: Valtir
"Stay still", the healer said dabbing Valtir's forehead with a piece of damp cotton. It was all valtir could do not to scream. "This will fester if I do not tend to it immediately sir. Ned come hold him down please." A brawny young man with a bald head and bushy black beard appeared behind the doctor. He walked around and held Valtir's shoulders down tightly. The doctor pulled the iron dagger out of the hearth and brandished the glowing red blade. Valtir took a deep breath and held his eyes.
He was too afraid to open his eyes but when the dagger touched him he knew, and he screamed so loud he was sure every village in the Lorik forest could hear him. The dagger made a singing sound as it burned the gaping red wound closed, Valtir wasn't sure if it was pain, or the sound that made him faint but when he woke up it didn't hurt anymore though he couldn't see through his left eye.
He brought a hand up and felt cloth covering his head and eye, when his hand made contact he felt like he had been kicked by a horse. He groaned with pain and before long the healer was back in the room with Ned close on his heels. "You need to rest knight, I've stopped the wound from festering but it will take a few days before you regain your strength, you're very lucky to be alive, were the wound any deeper you would likely have died before reaching me." the old white haired healer said. "I'm beginning to think death would hurt less."
