“Tell my parents that I have decided to visit a friend in Ardougne,” Elizabeth instructed the maid, as she gathered up her things, “Tell them I would've let them know in person, but that I found out just today that a group of white knights were leaving on a diplomatic mission, and was afraid I would miss the group if I stayed to long, and pf course, being a young maiden, I don't want to travel the dangerous roads alone.”
The maid nodded, well aware that Elizabeth's explanation was a lie meant to appease her parents. Unbeknownst to her parents, Elizabeth had made a point of keeping track of the knights' schedule, as it allowed her numerous excuses and alibis should she need them. In addition, Elizabeth was as skilled a fighter as any knight; and there were few real dangers for her on the road, as many a hapless highwayman had discovered the hard way. Of course, the maid wouldn't say anything, Elizabeth had the foresight to pour lavish gifts on her parents' servants, ensuring their complacency in nearly anything she did.
Tucking her sword into her belt, Elizabeth checked her supplies one final time, and nodding in satisfaction, walked over to the window of her room.
“What time should your parents expect m'lady back?” asked the maid.
“The white knights are set to return in two weeks time,” replied Elizabeth, “Depending on the circumstances with my friend, I may head back with an earlier or later group though. I will send a letter if my return will be later than two weeks.”

“I will let them know m'lady,” said the maid.
“Thank you,” said Elizabeth, tossing a small, jingling bag to the maid, “And here, a little something for your trouble.”
The maid picked up the bag, and noting it's fairly significant weight, smiled and bowed.
Certain that her instructions would be followed, Elizabeth looked outside her window, checking for any onlookers. Satisfied that she would be unseen, she leapt from the window, landing on the ground below silently and gracefully. With one final check that she was unwatched, she made her way out of the yard, and toward the gates of Falador.

It had been six days since Skia had started his apprenticeship at the Wizard's Tower. Those first several days had been busy; Skia had spent half his time assisting the wizards with their magical experiments, and most of the other half trying to avoid Chalcon. A feat that seemed much harder than it should be; since every day, Chalcon just so happened to decide to explore the same place Skia was planning to lay low in. These constant encounters had begun to wear Skia down a bit, to a point where his night prayers now contained a litany of rather harsh words for all three of the gods, since Skia was sure at least one of them was finding this situation very amusing.
As might be expected, spending his days either running errands or trying to evade a seemingly nigh-omnipresent roommate had taken its toll on Skia's energy. As such, he was one of the few apprentices who was actually happy to hear that today would be spent in a class going over the basics of magic.
The class was as dry as could be expected; all the apprentices sat at desks while an old wizard gave a long rambling speech on runes, and the types of spells they were used in. Truly elementary stuff which most of the apprentices had figured out years before attracting the notice of the Wizard's Tower. Thus, it was of little surprise that most of the apprentices found themselves dozing off a short way into the lecture. Skia had also been dozing off, but as the lecture was going on, he suddenly became alert.
Just before catching Skia's attention the old wizard had been off on a long, rambling description of the types of enchantments that cosmic runes could be used in. And as expected by most of the class he had then gone into the subject of nature runes. Once again elementary stuff, and Skia would've ignored it had he not caught the wizard's early statements.

“Nature runes,” the wizard had said, “Are used to change the nature or substance of something, and do not necessarily have to do with 'nature' as in the natural world. Oddly, despite this distinction, they are made by infusing magical energies associated with an abundance of natural flora, for reasons we do not understand.”
To most people, this would've been just another boring part of a boring lecture, but Skia had caught the word “made” indicating that, despite what most people believed, at least some of the wizards in the Wizards' Tower knew the secrets of the supposedly lost art of runecrafting. After becoming sure of what he had heard, Skia's hand shot up.
Taken a bit aback that someone was firstly awake, and secondly actually had a question, the wizard stopped in mid-sentence and stared blankly at Skia for a few moments. Finally regaining his composure, the wizard cleared his throat and said, “Yes, Apprentice Aeole?”
The interruption in the wizard's rambling seem to awaken most of the students who now also stared at Skia. More than a few were already certain that he was just going to ask an elementary question, and already had insults on their lips. Most of them nearly called these insults out when Skia asked, “How are rune's made?” since they all knew the art of runecrafting had been lost for many ages.
“Unfortunately,” the wizard replied with a patronizing smile, “That knowledge was lost when the last Wizards' Tower was burnt down. As such, no one knows anymore.”
“But you just said that nature runes are made by infusing magical energies in places with a lot of natural flora. How do you know that if you don't know the secrets of runecrafting?” questioned Skia.
The wizard turned as pale as a ghost, and beads of sweat formed on his brow. Having seen that his students had been dozing, he had allowed himself to more think aloud than give his speech; was it possible he had let something slip out?
“Y-you must have misheard me,” the wizard stuttered.

“Then I must have misheard you as well,” said Veryth, “In which case, you better be pretty nervous, I doubt the head wizard would be happy to know that your lectures are so completely boring that it makes your students hear things.”
Under normal circumstances the old wizard would've scolded Veryth for being rude to him, but as it was, feeling backed into a corner, he was too nervous to do anything of the sort. Unfortunately for him, his inability to respond only made the less attentive students more certain that he was hiding something about runecrafting and left him with two unsavory options; give away that indeed, runecrafting had been rediscovered, and in doing so, possibly allowing that knowledge to fall into the wrong hands, or lying, in which case any of these apprentices who did become full-fledged wizards would likely hold it against him.
Thankfully, just as the wizard was about to have to choose between these options, Sedridor's voice filled the room, requesting his immediate presence in order to help open a portal to the mage's guild in order to transport some supplies.
Clearing his throat, the old wizard turned to his students and said, “As much as I would love to discuss the art of runecrafting with all of you, I have just been called away. Should any of you wish to pursue the topic, please seek me out later and I will explain what I know.” Mentally making a note to always be busy if a student should happen to find him, the wizard added, “Oh, and by the way, there will be an announcement at dinner tonight, make sure you attend.” and teleported away.

Veryth and Skia stared at the spot their teacher had been standing, both aware that he had absolutely no intention of telling them anything, and that he was probably going to avoid all of them from now on. While they were miffed by this, the other apprentices seemed happy just to get out of the mind-numbing lecture, and quickly piled out of the room, while guessing amongst themselves about what the promised announcement would be about.
Seeing that most of the apprentices were leaving, Veryth gave Skia a grudging nod of approval before going to join her peers.
Skia made no move to leave. It had been a long time since he had been acknowledged by anyone, and Veryth wasn't exactly the type of person Skia expected to show any sort of recognition to another person. He might have remained standing in the classroom for a while had he not felt a hand rest on his shoulder. Turning around, he was unsettled to see Chalcon standing right behind him smiling.
“You're pretty sharp,* said Chalcon, “Most of us didn't notice the teacher's slip up. Good work.”
It was only a minor compliment, but Skia was firstly unused to any sort of compliment at all, and secondly still unable to maintain his composure when being close to Chalcon, much less when Chalcon was touching him. As such, he began blushing, and barely managed a quiet “thank you” before bolting out the door.
Chalcon remained in the classroom, looking Skia flee with a hint of amusement.
“I hope you're not just playing with that boy. If so, I would watch your back.”
For the first time since he had entered the Wizards' Tower, the look on Chalcon's face was one of absolute surprise. He turned around, and noticed the open windows of the classroom darkening despite it being near noon. As the room darkened, a number of candles that had been spread about the room for night studies became alight with violet flames, bathing the room in an eerie light.

Chalcon took several deep breaths, even though he was technically an apprentice, he was well aware that the significant amount of magical energy which was ambient to the classroom was now under a single mage's control. Staring expectantly, Chalcon could already see mist gathering in the far end of the room; a mix of mist which seemed to be illuminated by the violet light of the candles, and other mist that seemed to be as black and impenetrable as midnight, gathering together and making the form of a single person.
The intruder was obviously a magic user; even a child of three could tell that. The mage wore the stereotypical pointed hat of a wizard, but with a wider brim which covered the eyes. From under the hat, strands of silver hair which nearly reached the mage's shoulders were visible. Despite the silver hair, the mage had the smooth skin associated with youth, and this, combined with the loose mantle that the mage wore around the shoulders made determining the gender and age of this intruder difficult; even the mage's voice seemed able to either belong to a man or a woman.
“A pleasure to see you here,” said Chalcon, “To what do I owe the honor of entertaining a member of the Witches' Synod?”
“I just so happened to be in the neighborhood,” replied the mage, “Some of my chattel tracked a certain fugitive to this world. It seems he's been quiet active too.”
“He must be quite a dangerous fugitive for you to come personally, I assume he is dealt with then?” asked Chalcon.
“Don't play with me,” snapped the mage, “You know better than I do that there is nothing I can do in this situation. Because of this.” The mage snapped, and a piece of parchment covered in gold-green writing appeared in front of Chalcon, floating in the air.

Chalcon glanced over the parchment; he already knew what it was, but feigned interest nonetheless. “Ah, yes,” he said, “The Edicts of Guthix. They're only meant to apply to gods, but there's a very thin line between a mage who's become immortal and a god, isn't that right? Still, you've bent the rules before, why not do it again this time?”
The mage glared at Chalcon, quite certain the “apprentice” knew the answer to his own question. Chalcon noted the look and smiled saying, “Humor me.”
“The so-called “High Council of Gielinor” would notice my interference in an instant and run screaming to Guthix,” replied the mage, “Although, I will admit that I am very curious as to why a council of archmages is watching over this land with such intense scrutiny...”
“Considering that, what do you intend to do?” asked Chalcon, “Have you come here to ask for my help?”
“Don't flatter yourself,” the mage replied, “I was curious about exactly what you are doing here, so I stuck around and watched you for a while. I would've stayed longer, but I need to visit “The Senate” soon and let them know about the situation on this world.
I don't suppose you'll tell me what you're doing sitting around in this amusing little playground? And don't expect me to believe you're here to learn.”
“What? Are you insinuating that I have not been entirely enthralled by the astounding rune magic practiced on this world?” asked Chalcon.
The mage sighed, “Very well, keep your secrets. Would you like me to relay anything to the Synod or the Senate for you?”
“You probably would've done this already, but remind them that they shouldn't take unilateral action on this world. I'm sure that the mages here have some liaison with the Senate of Magi, even if they don't actually know they do.”
“I'll remember that,” said the mage, “Until we meet again, Chalcon.” With a snap of his fingers, the mage vanished and the room was back to the way it had been before.
