Millstone - a sleepy little town located somewhere within Appalachia, just off the beaten track of the Appalachian Trail - where state lines are blurred in the midst of thick foliage and high mountains. Boasting only a mild population of 1200 inhabitants Millstone barely qualifies as a town, only getting smaller as people leave and nobody new moves in. Life in such a remote place leads to a lack of excitement, everyone knew everyone and a solid internet connection was near unheard of. The most memorable event would be little more than a crashed car.

That changed the day of July 17th, 2010 - what would be called the greatest tragedy the town had ever experienced.

The day Millstone Caverns collapsed.

-

Even over the thunderous rainfall the sounds of raised voices and honking horns could be heard, the residents of Millstone rushing over the hill to where the cavern entrance was located - flashing lights and heavy equipment across the entire clearing.

The sheriff looked on with a sullen gaze, his clothes soaked through even despite the heavy rain poncho he wore. Rescue workers had been going in and out of the entrance for hours, experts had been called in from Ridgerock along with the heavier equipment to try and safely dig their way further in - where the caverns had collapsed in the early afternoon. On any ordinary day the collapse would never have garnered such hefty response, but today... Of all the god damned days it could have happened, it was the day of Millstone Middle School's field trip.

Forty-eight students aged between 10-14 alongside ten chaperones and two guides entered the caverns shortly after lunch, roughly an hour before the collapse. Half of the group had been led back by a guide minutes before the collapse, and were safe - the rest had been trapped inside. Once they broke past the the first rockfall rescuers had found most of the remaining students in the cave beyond, having been only a short way behind the initial group when the collapse

took place, their injuries were minor - merely scrapes and bruises.

However, a handful of the children, two chaperones and the second guide were still missing. The rescued group had told them that some of the other students had gotten separated from the group, and the guide had gone looking for them along with the two missing chaperones after sending the rest of them back the right way.

It was dark now - it'd been over seven hours since the group was rescued, and there were no signs of the missing.

...

The sheriff blinked, breaking from his trance as a commotion caught his attention. There was a sudden burst of activity from the cavern entrance, raised voices filled with something different from the struggling professionalism he'd heard all day and night. His eyes widened with hope as he rushed for the entrance, the sounds becoming more distinct - shouts of excitement, cheers, even some sobbing somewhere in the midst... And even as he reached the entrance he could see children being led out, silent or sobbing, and his chest lightened.

Until one more sound emerged, silencing the cheers, piercing through them all and echoing through the caverns - screaming. He pushed past a couple of rescuers and hurried inside, lights illuminating his path and flashlight taking away the shadows that remained - there, a boy being held by rescuers as he screamed like a banshee, eyes glued to a low crevice - barely enough for such youths to fit through, let alone a grown man. Lights illuminated nothing, the boy was hurried outside - his screams echoing long after he was brought to safety.

That screaming would haunt them for years.

-

Nine years later

-

The man awoke with a violent start, bolting upright and lashing out in search of the light switch - clicking it on in his panic. It was bright, blinding him, but brought him back to his senses. He blinked away the spots in his vision, quietly groaning as he kicked his legs off the bed and sat there - rubbing his head.

Sleeping was still difficult even after all this time, but now... Now he supposed it made sense for those nightmares to be hitting him, with what he was doing. He stood, making his way over to the window and opening the blinds to let in the early morning sunlight - taking a moment to absorb the warmth and wipe away his cold sweat.

The motel parking lot was nothing to look at, but the glimpse of his pale reflection in the window was enough to settle him - for now. He sighed. This was the last motel until he reached Millstone, just a few hours and he'd be... Home. The man grimaced, but a determined gaze met his in the window.

He wouldn't back out... It was time to go home and face the past, no matter what.

~SUMMARY~

Welcome to Dark Places, ladies and gentlemen. Here you will be playing one of the survivors of the Millstone Caverns collapse, one of the students amongst that handful that were trapped within the caverns for hours - only to crawl out from a narrow crevice with little memory of what happened within.

After the events of the collapse you moved away from Millstone for one reason or another, and now nine years later you have received an invitation to return for the last reunion of Millstone Middle School before it's torn down. Whatever your reasons may be for doing so, you have chosen to accept this invitation - and return to the hometown you knew so long ago.

Though is this really the Millstone you knew? Something seems off in this sleepy little town, something that makes you think back to that fateful day and wonder - what happened down in those caves, and why do you remember that distinct sensation of being watched?
