This week marks 5 years of Town Square Q&A in Old School RuneScape; the first session that was hosted was on May 2nd, 2013.

When Old School first started up, there wasn’t much of a need for an initiative such as Town Square (which has always targeted newer players to the game) as everyone was starting from scratch – all of us were figuring everything out again, and most who hopped over were veterans of RuneScape who had been playing for years, rather than new players. As time progressed, newer players began to join in and were learning the game alongside of the more experienced vets who were just starting out again, as many did back in the original days.

The need for Old School Town Square Q&A didn’t become apparent until a series of in-game “Q&A’s” that the Old School team hosted towards the end of March 2013. Unlike current times, this was just as Twitch was beginning to take off, so JMod livestreams were a concept that had not yet been explored. Several things stood out at us as we attended:

• Numerous players commented that it was incredibly rare to see a PMod
• There were the usual common misconceptions as to what PMods did (their purpose was much different in 2013 than it was in Old School’s original 2007 time)
• Players did have questions about the game that could be asked at a Town Square session if one existed in Old School
• In general, the players enjoyed chatting with the JMods (and afterwards, the PMods who stuck around)

And so, the concept of bringing Town Square to Old School was born. Considering the initial version of Town Square Q&A started out in the Old School era (2006-2007), it seemed fitting to bring it back to Old School. We did have a few things to consider when starting it up again, such as what world to host our session on and what in-game location to host at. Traditionally, Town Square had been hosted on a populated F2P world, but Old School didn’t have F2P yet, and the populated worlds were filled with trading spam in the typical locations that RS3’s sessions were, so we had to improvise. We ended up outside of the Varrock West Bank on World 330 – enough players were running by that we caught plenty of attention, got plenty of questions, and overall the session was a success.

Over time, things changed – F2P was added, the Grand Exchange was added, newer locations were trialed, and so on. One thing stayed the same though – Town Square continued to be a successful initiative where players were free to ask whatever game related questions were on their minds and could see that PMods and veteran players were more than happy to help, regardless of game version.

Many thanks to all who have helped make the initiative a success over the last 5 years, and here’s to another 5 successful years in Old School. :)
