I upgraded my account to a Jagex Account although now I wouldn't say "I upgraded my account" rather than "I lost my account".

Everything was smooth sailing during the transition, my account was displayed in the launcher without issue except for when I actually tried to play the game. Both the Runlite and "new client" loaded up perfectly, but when I clicked on my character's name to play, I was given a "Failed to login, please try again" message, without any explanation.

I did some tinkering, I logged out of the launcher and the website, I turned off my VPN (I live in China so it's absolutely necessary to use a VPN to even use the Runescape website let alone play the game), but now the problem has gotten even worse.

Now, when trying to use the launcher, no account is shown at all and I am prompted to "Add an account". When I try to sign in with my (newly upgraded) Jagex account using my email and password, my login credentials aren't accepted! It's not possible the account has been stolen as I use 2-step authentication. I even reset my password, that password isn't accepted either. Not even my pre-"upgrade" password is accepted?

Which freaking password does the launcher want from me?

bump

I uninstalled and reinstalled the Jagex Launcher and it now accepts my Jagex Account login credentials, so that ought to be a consistent fix to the "unable to login to launcher" situations.

However, I am still unable to actually PLAY the game with my upgraded character.

"Failed to login.

Please try again"

Could this be linked to the VPN or my location in China, or is it something else?

I should clarify that using both RuneLite and the OSRS Client prior to "upgrading" presented no problems at all despite using a VPN service (although turning OFF the VPN would render the game unplayable since I guess it is blocked in China)

Thank you for the suggestion, I attempted to fill in the form as accurately as possible, but am stuck in a CAPTCHA loop whereby I am sent to an refreshed and empty form page with every attempt to submit.

Perhaps, for now, the universe is telling me to take a break from Runescape ;)

I will say this:

Beware to any who are considering upgrading to the Jagex Account/Launcer system. In an attempt to modernize and streamline the gaming experience, Jagex have introduced a host of unknown errors, bugs and complications! I wish now that I had stuck to my old account, unfortunately this mistake is irreversible!

I am prompted to "Add an account".

You cannot be logged into the Launcher with a Jagex Account and unimported Runescape accounts at the same time.

Log out of the Launcher completely, then log in with your Jagex Account details.

Yessir, that is what I did.

Actually, upon deactivating the VPN I was force-logged out, probably as a response to the sudden switching-off of the VPN.

Anyway, when attempting to log back into the launcher, the form presented for me to enter my login credentials did not accept my jagex account password , in fact my chosen jagex account password was too long to be written in its entirety .

I solved that issue by reinstalling the launcher entirely, which allowed me to log back into my jagex account just fine. Oddly, the "failed" form looked different to the form that successfully allowed me back in. The "failed" form had the traditional Runescape website aesthetic and colour scheme, whereas the "successful" form had the updated, modern Jagex launcher aeshetic. Could that be a bug, I wonder? Probably related to the VPN.

My situation now is that, after following every step via the Jagex Launcher correctly, right up to the moment where I can hit "Play Now" at the familiar Runescape login screen we all know and love, I receive a "Login Failed. Please try again." message.

Very odd, probably a China thing.

Yes, that's how you can tell whether the login email you have supplied is for a Jagex Account, or old-style Runescape account. Or if the login page you have used is dedicated to one or other type of account.

See the table labelled "If you're not sure if you have a Jagex account, here's how to find out:" on this page:

Yes, it might be a China thing.

Normally, when you click "Play" for RS3 in the Launcher, it loads the game client, and logs you in, so you go straight to the lobby, logged in on the character you selected. You only get the "Play now" button if you subsequently log out of the game client.

So it could be part of the login server interaction needed when the Launcher passes the login token over to the game client is being blocked.

Thank you!

I am quite certain I have a Jagex account as I am currently logged in to the Jagex Launcher and can see my imported character's name is present as I'd expect it to be having followed all given instructions. I used my new login credentials to get to the point, not my "old" account credentials.

Actually, logging into the Jagex Launcher itself is no longer a problem (although I expect if I were to turn my VPN off I'd be able to recreate the same trouble I encountered earlier). The issue arrives when, at the familiar game login screen with the braziers and the doorway (where we would usually enter our email and password one last time before actually entering the game), the form to enter those credentials is absent and is replaced by a button which simply says, "Play Now" along with my character's name.

Hitting that button, I'd expect to appear in the world of Runescape as I've done so thousands of times before upgrading. Instead, I remain on that familiar login screen and the "Play Now" button is replaced by a message that reads, "Login Failed. Please try again."

Thanks for your patience guys, this truly is a mysterious situation.

BUMP WITH INTERESTING UPDATE

Using Jagex Account login credentials, I am able to play on my character using the OSRS Mobile app.

This narrows things down considerably, since it proves my Jagex account works as intended, and that my imported character is still eligible to play the game.

So, the obstacle exists somewhere between logging into the launcher and playing the game...

Could it be a problem with the Runelite and New official client working in tandem with the launcher...?
