I think it's random selection to be honest. My main has played for years and they didn't pick me either I understand.
It's a bummer because my OCD will kick in if this character isn't first

If I upgrade my alt, can I import this account, and will this account be listed first? Being my main and most hard worked on I would prefer if it was first in the list of accounts, or are we able to move them around? The accounts are listed in the order that they are added to the Jagex Account in the character selection drop down. You can't change the order (or at least, not at the moment).
The Launcher remembers which account you last selected, so if you normally only play on your main, that will be the default each time the Launcher is started.
Jagex have announced that the open beta will start in "early April", so if you do prefer to wait, then you won't have to wait long. Glad to be of service
