Mist Rising made an interesting comment about semi-common rares. I believe that a status of moderately-rare to rare could work as well. Even with potentially lowered spawn rate of a handful of crackers per person per year, that is still spawning.
This idea is actually quite good since it still benefits
everyone
and it allows for them to be worth something too. If you make knee jerk reactions and sell everything based on profitability, feel like you are lied to... whatever. Calm the **** down. Participate in the community.
Picture a scenario of limited spawning rares on a once a year basis. Everybody still gets them annually and everybody can still hoard them. That way people get free money, cool stuff and there is more of a merch/hoard community. What is wrong with hoarding? Even if partyhats are worth 100k forever (edit: spawning 2 sets of each per holiday) people will continue to buy them because after a certain point you have to make goals. Eventually they will have so many they will dominate the market in a new and weirder way everyone will hate.
Some people want to buy 20 AGS, some people want to buy 200 phat set... whatever. The problem with hoarding is totally cutting off the supply. If people hoard rares, and the little guys like me still get a couple a year for free... I can buy 99's... expensive equip etc. just for participating in the game.
Whatever though, ppl rage... ppl rage.
I think there is a lot of potential for a strong rare community where rares are actually rare... and a hoard/merch community can do what they want. While everyday players, the average joe, me, can get free stuff that is actually worth something.
QED.
