I'll be honest, none of these sound that appealing to me.

Sailing sounds miserable to train. Like Agility, but worse. Hard pass.

Taming is just Summoning no matter how you try spinning it. Summoning shouldn't ever be a part of OSRS. This would completely strip away the soul of the game.

Shamanism is the only one with even slight potential, but I'm worried about introducing even more power creep. And I definitely don't like the idea of a Spirit World, keep this all to already existing spaces (I've never been a fan of Zeah and have spent very little time in that part of the game).

I don't think any of the purposed "skills" sound healthy for OSRS. Skills are cleanly defined operations, like: Mining (ore rock + pickaxe = ore, that can be used to smith armor & weapons); Fishing (fishing tackle + fishing spot = fish); Woodcutting (tree + axe = logs for firemaking & fletching), Combat ( weapon + enemy = battle), etc.... The three purposed skills are a disorganized conglomeration of mismatched ideas, that I fear will ruin, or complicate Old School gameplay. Will these skills be omittable, without affecting gameplay? Right now, we have all kinds of pures, that omit one or more skills, and can play their desired skills without having to participate in the ones they don't care for. Sailing, Taming, and Shamanism seem poorly planned, and directionless. I don't see how they will make Old School a better game. RS3 is a mess, because the gameplay was drastically changed, and people left in droves. It was no longer our beloved game. I've seen people suggest that the purposed skills might make good minigames, and I agree. Interested players could pursue them, while others could ignore them.

ok so i will try and keep this short and sweet, although i don't think 2k characters is enough...

i've played runescape since 2003, been here from before the game started to evolve with higher tier quests and weapons etc, that game was what the era at the time allowed for "complex" abilities as runescape mostly targeted children at the time, myself being one of them.

around 2006 came the times where people were growing up, staking/pking was more evolved with clans and mage bank, 2007/8 seen better armours and new bosses to keep up with growing additions to the game, then came 2009-10... things got much better as the players who had played in the beginning years, remained to play due to updates not being STUPIDLY OUT OF HAND.

in the 2009-10 era, we seen the ability for max cape, recolouring of it, summoning being useful in both skilling, pvp and pvm, pack yak for example, unicorn, fruit bat, terrorbird, all these had their unique abilities like helping to heal run etc.

then, a lot of players, as seen, QUIT playing as the EOC came out, yes some players stayed and some new players were attracted, but the majority of the "oldschool players" quit.

so why not, instead of trying to create new skills, just slowly rearrange the game and bring back what was here PRE-EOC.

yes a new skill sounds great, but, and this is a big BUT... as many stated, these new skills all sound like minigame type material, for example... runecrafting is tedious, we now have GOTR, fishing has tempoross, firemaking WindT... why not ADJUST these "skill pitches" into minigames, that say for example HELP other skills, like maybe agility and thieving into one of them, herblore and woodcutting into another, farming and construction into another.

but instead of making them instanced minigames, make them like pest control, or castle wars?

just my personal concept, some may agree some may disagree, this is why we are human, everyone is different :)

Love all 3 ideas spoilt for choice! After reading through all proposed ideas I would really love to see Sailing implemented into the game. Something about exploring the vastness of the ocean is thrilling.

It would also engage the community and let accounts of all builds to work together from what I have gathered. It makes the most sense as there are so many areas of the game that are non accessible due to the water.

the rewards and new methods are definitely a breath of fresh air and it will be very exciting to see the finishing result if it passes. Thank you to the amazing dev team at Jagex who constructed not 1 but 3 ideas to give the to community. It really puts into perspective how hard they work, how creative they are and how much time care and effort they genuinely give :D

I'm going to be honest, all the proposals sound exciting to me! Am I just easy to please? You be the judge. :P

In all seriousness, Sailing would probably be my pick of the trio of awesome pitches as the exploration aspect has been something I thought would fit into the Old School style of playing going back to when this skill was just an unfounded rumour in the RS2 days!

There's understandable criticism in the thread about sailing feeling like a mini-game or even like agility as someone said above. All perfectly reasonable reservations imo, however , I still think it's a worthy candidate because:

a) Although it may sound like agility at the high level pitch stage, the unlocking of islands to explore, skill and PvM on sound a lot more exciting a reward than what agility offers.

b) Any skill on release will feel somewhat cheap and childish. Just cast your mind back to literally any skill released in the RS2 era, like RC and Slayer and how many updates those skills received within just 3 years of release, let alone the mammoth changes we see in those skills in OSRS today!

I'm quite excited to see all this evolve, may the best skill win ;)

Taming sounds the most exciting! Access new skill nodes to buff base skills gold rates, and usefulness? Having combat, or beast of burden options similar to familiars in RS3 wouldn't be unwelcome. *Allowing thralls to be used with the new pets (?)

Shamanism should be a spell book or expansion, not a skill in itself. Where was it ever mentioned in lore but with ogres, or maybe a couple other places? Noting how it could be an interesting addition to the game, however.

Sailing could be an OP D&D like Player owned ports but more involvement. Simply giving construction, crafting exp and rewards, two skills that aren't so rewarding, save for Ironmen players and the construction convenience items. So many PvM updates are crashing resource prices while keeping their desirable items pricey. Skilling becoming less relevant by the week it seems, in terms of gold making and resource gathering.

Taming:

I think it would be fun if it felt like the old tomagachis, keep taking care of your animal or it dies.
There are some big issues I see though, like how does it interact will skill/boss pets, how many animals can you have tamed at once, are they permanent or do they die, to name a few.

Hey jagex team!

Really love the idea of all 3 new skills. Whatever happens in the poll, I just want a new skill in the game. But I think its rigged in sailings favour.

Sailing definitely seems the most thought out, we know you've been discussing sailing for years now. It is almost guaranteed to win the polls. I think it's a little unfair considering the community seems to not like buffing their characters, which is why ppl didnt like summoning, and why shamanism wont win. they think the challenge of the game will be lost if you add some extra buffs to ur characters.

Taming would be a DREAM for me. I loved summoning back in the old runescape days. Taming would be incredible, modifying summonings issues, and adding plenty of new fun content with familiars and companions.

Shamanism sounds very interesting, definitely the least favourite of mine from these 3 personally though. I would love some cool buffing items, consumable or permanent.

Instead of an entirely new skill, why not revamp current skills? Many skills need levels reset (why is rune 90 smithing?). You can account for power creep and integrate various gameplay elements better. you can also create new content around these skills - quests, minigames, etc.

In addition to power creep, you can handle end game content better, more training methods, new items, more lore development, and more. A new skill doesn't fix the issues with current skills. The game doesn't need a new skill, it needs recalibrated skills.
