Poll Question #9:
Should Charlie the Tramp's Beginner Clue steps allow the player to give him items they’ve prepared in advance, instead of forcing them to fish and cook new ones?
First, it is unclear to me if the player will still have to prepare the item themselves or if they can use a bought/traded item. Assuming that the game will not check if the player actually produced the item...
I've engaged with this content quite a bit (top 3k for beginners) and I agree that Charlie steps are annoying and have room for improvement. However, the proposed change is not in the spirit of why Charlie steps exist in the first place.
I thought Charlie steps were originally intended to expose low level players to the clue step style given by Sherlock. Like for Sherlock, players should be required to make the product themselves by meeting the skill level requirements while holding the clue in their inventory.
At the same time, I think there are ways to improve beginner clue scrolls because it is my experience that beginners can take longer than easies or mediums to complete and offer far less rewards for it. If the goal is to reduce average time to complete beginners while still preserving the spirit of a clue, here are some ideas. To be clear, I'm not suggesting to use all the ideas.
Idea A: Model Charlie steps off of Falo instead of Sherlock. This would preserve Charlie steps as being a preview to higher level content while allowing players to quickly grab items from the bank to show. The tasks would need to be rewritten to ask for low level items (including untradeables obtained from engaging with low level content) instead of skilling items.
Idea B: Make Charlie steps a guaranteed final step.
Idea C: Change the weights for the number of steps from 10/45/45 to around 25/50/25.
Idea D: Prevent Charlie steps from being the 2nd or 3rd step.
Idea E: Remove the possibility of a 3rd step, making the weights somewhere between 10/90 and 25/75.
