Defensive
Skill mechanics should always be the most important factor to master in a well designed boss fight. But having to think about your setup to maximize your efficiency is also quite interesting. Practically speaking we see alot of all out DPS builds in the game, while defensive stats have almost become a joke. But with the right pvm mechanics it is possible to, not only bring less valued items back into the game, but also to make gear setup decisions more interesting. Without too much pushing.
For example:
The Nightmare could possess some very deadly moves, which makes the fight feel lively. One of its attack could involve The Nightmare choosing a victim (to steal life from), resulting in taking massive damage. Obviously players should be able to avoid taking a lot of damage based on their mechanical skills. But when a player is targeted, another player can get the attention of the boss and take a lot of damage himself (as a sacrifice). This could potentially breathe life into more defensive gear for at least one team member. And perhaps it could give spells like heal other some interesting uses. As, for example, The Nightmare would gain power by taking the life of a team member, feasting upon its life force. This would make it more important in a team fight to keep everybody alive.
