I want to go on record saying that the idea of adding statues LIKE they were in the past is one of the worse ideas that you could do. they were so prevailing and so easy to get and gave so much gps that it completely ruined the ability of non pkers to make money. it caused armor and such to skyrocket. it got to the point that if we couldn't make it ourselves it wasn't within our reach because the pkers had so much money and had no reason not to spend it.
now if they are rare, don't give that kind of gps, and are hard to get, that might be ok.
you said you were looking at another pvp type situation, involving skilling. how about something like the nightmare zone, where instead of fighting the monsters, you had to skill them out of existence or into health once again. it could require teams of skillers to bring it about.
here's and example. an invisible (and thus unattackable) foe is killing trees and tree ents (the good kind). using herb and farming, you and your team have to grow stuff that will save them. using wc you have to cut away the dead or diseased parts. using fm you have to burn diseased parts that have been cut off. perhaps even fletching could be used to create something that slows the spread of the attack. you could even add mining, crafting, and smithing to add things that would be usefull.
in one version you have a set amount of trees and tree ents to save. if you succeed, get your rewards. in other version, there is an unlimited amount and you go until they overwhelm you.
this is just an example of what you could do for skillers that would give a variety to skilling. it would take the place of it, but would give comparable exps, perhaps a bit more, but not much. it could give rewards that would help in skilling.
frankly my dear, I couldn't give a dam. never had a river to build one on.
