I don't think anyone is defending the implementation of 10x XP into the main game. Maybe, perhaps, defending to implement a competition for paying members to participate in without pole, but not for 10x XP in the main game.
The competition not being polled is not the issue that players should be concerned about. The intent of it was to be a competition taking place outside of the main game, and it had a glitch that was not anticipated. By the nature of a bug or glitch, those sort of things do happen from time to time, and they can slip through the cracks to wreak havoc. See the 'Durial321' dilemma back in '06 with that 99 Construction rush from CursedYou, or take a look at other games with active development that run into game-breaking bugs from time to time.
It is never intended for bugs of this nature to occur. Are the bugs squashed in fair time? Usually. Are rollbacks performed? That depends on how the system works and how widespread/impactful the damage really is. I would have appreciated a proper rollback on top of the bug squash, but I am not entirely certain as to whether or not that has actually occurred (and I'm not sure if there's a quote stating whether or not there was one done, or one thought of but rejected).
Polling the competition would not have made much of a difference in either direction. There still would have been a chance for the glitch not making it to primary servers, and there would have been a chance for it occurring, regardless of a poll.
Now, should there have been more time put into testing this? Perhaps. An additional day might've caught the bug, or given them time to find out or remember that there are different modules that modify obtained-XP. This is the only thing I can really agree on; granting a little more time to test things a little more thoroughly, even though there still exists a chance for game-breaking glitches and bugs.
I can agree to furthered testing, but not polling of external competitions.
