Chiming in here, I know its an old thread, but, here goes:
The
ONLY
evidence you need from in-game to establish that horses are
not
the same as the hornless unicorns is the fact that there are still items in-game that directly reference horses rather than "hornless unicorns". I refer to the items "Toy Horsey". These items come in 4 colors, two of which parallel the two colors of unicorns found in Gielinor. There were no brown or grey unicorns in Gielinor, and no examine text, usage, etc., ever refers to the toy horse by any other description other than "horse". Therefore, Horses, by name, did in fact exists and were known to the inhabitants in Runescape.
As for why we don't see them, or any stables, coincides with the same phenomenon of why we can literally walk over a mountain and between 3 castle-toting kingdoms in mere minutes; scale theory.
Scale theory is employed in this game for simplicity, and because this game originated as a java client in the browser without requiring it to be installed to the computer, it would have been too cumbersome or impractical to the player to have an overly scale-correct world streamed through a 640x480 screen at the time. Games like WoW, SWTOR, FFXIV, and the like, those games employ mounts BECAUSE they are so freakishly and realistically huge and NEED to have speed-increasing mounts (and they also have casting timers for teleports, most of which will charge you for their use). Of course, nowadays the game could easily be adapted to be scaled up, which would likely see the introduction of mounts, WASD movement, and other huge engine changes, it is doubtful that Jagex would evolve Runescape into that kind of game in replacement (maybe as a side project for fun or a completely different game altogether?).
So instead, we just don't see horses or evidence of them being there, because it would be as useful as adding toilets around Gielinor; a waste of graphical resources for no useful reason.
