I don't think there's nearly enough upper positions for the higher races...hence why Senecianus was just an accountant.

...Actually, now that I think about it, there probably weren't any private businesses and all forms of (legalized) trade was controlled by the empire.
Runescape doesn't need a hero...it needs a villain. An all encompassing force of evil that will remain ever-threatening and use chaos to make the peoples of Gielinor tolerate each other, grow strong together, and fight side by side against this evil. I am that villain.

I encourage you to give the thread a bit of a re-read. You might find some of the answers you are looking for.

Anyways, here is the transcript of a twitter conversation between Mod Jack and I that is particularly relevant.

Myself: Hi, was the economy and trading systems within the Zarosian Empire controlled, and run by the state/Zaros or was it run by private sectors (Capitalism)."

Mod Jack: "Probably a mixture of both. Public services built by the church (and paid with heavy taxes/tithes). This might include food."

In regards the question about humans being shopkeepers I present the following relevant text.

"Sliske wrote and performed a play for the elite of Senntisten: the more urbane demons and the most powerful human merchants and bureaucrats." (Ralvash's memory)

So at least some humans had to be merchants, enough at least to form conceptions of powerful human merchants and non powerful human merchants.

You're quite right. It would probably be impossible for all members of the higher races, or even just the majority of the Cthonians to hold positions of power in the empire.

First of all, the higher races were the bulk of the empire's armies before humans came along. It's not like they all quit when humans came along. Yes, many Cthonians and Mahjarrat deferred to politics, and at least some Vampyres became scientists, but it would not be likely for all of them to leave the army. Especially the cthonians who had been bred for war.

In addition, newer Cthonians would likely have been built for a specific tasks by their spawn father's. They wouldn't have a choice in their occupation, that doesn't seem like power to me. Also, I doubt the Cthonians were just spawning priests, and politicians, and other occupations of power, but more likely cthonians designed to do more mundane things. Like accounting.

I really wish we knew more about the Vampyres.

There is the obvious problem about their feeding.... but also about what they did. Unlike the Cthonians and Avernic they were not necessarily brought here as an army. We know some were soldiers, and some were scientists. Their fifth age culture implies they are politically inclined. So perhaps many were politicians...

Personally, I would want them to fill in some sort niche job.

Also thanks as always for you input Mod Jack :D

I wonder if, given their apparent ability to manipulate blood, they might have functioned as doctors. Their abilities could allow them to literally pull a patient's pathogens out of their circulatory system. Gives a whole new meaning to paying in blood though.

He was an accountant, his main clientele would have been the business owners; humans.

What on earth makes you think business owners would be humans? XD

"The population continued to rise uncontrollably and the proportion that belonged to the clergy or the military fell and fell. More and more so, the humans devoted themselves to the provision of luxury and services for each other. "
-Akthanakos' Memory.

There's also been one statement by Mod Jack, I believe it is somewhere in this thread, that the "sweatshops" in which poor humans worked, were also mostly run by humans.

From what we've been told, the only people of Senntisten that really cared about money over sheer power were humans.

Y'know, I really can't help but notice that, from a storytelling perspective, there are some striking similarities between Zamorak and Donald Trump. They both took on the establishment, and against all odds, won. This old empire sounds like it was a nasty place stagnant with corruption.

Some good things that came from it though was the advancement of finer things like architecture and magical discovery. I see Zaros as a tainted version of Guthix. I also don't buy into him learning from his mistakes, simply because he probably believes nothing was wrong to begin with. I could be off on that, but I'm betting much of the dialogue in FoTg was nothing more than honeyed words.

In the end, if you believe power and prosperity should be for the elite; and the rest simply exist to facilitate their advancement, then follow Zaros. I support Zamorak because he advocates the opportunity for all to rise, given they have the self determination to do so.

Zamorak 2016! Drain the swamp again in the 6th age! (I couldn't resist, too funny)

In light of this revelation, I suggest that we build a wall around the Lore Forums and make the roleplayers pay for it. Meanwhile the Saradominists are going to flee to the Canadian servers. Runescape doesn't need a hero...it needs a villain. An all encompassing force of evil that will remain ever-threatening and use chaos to make the peoples of Gielinor tolerate each other, grow strong together, and fight side by side against this evil. I really like this. I will definitely spend time thinking about this more. I've been flicking through Roman history on hospitals and one thing struck me as interesting. Hospitals were primarily used only for slaves and soldiers. (Rich people got private doctors)

Now think about who the Vampyres would actually be treating. Cthonians, Vampyres (Didn't read the novels. Maybe false) Mahjarrat have never been stated to have blood. (Dragonriders I assume have blood but there is like 20 of them so they count barely more than Char)

Humans, Avernic, Werewolves all are reported to possess blood. These of course these three species are the lesser species of the empire that would make up the backbone of the army and the factories.

So I think it's reasonable to theorize that hospitals were filled primarily with the lesser races.

Now if I were to theorize about the state of mind for an apathetic mahjarrat, demon or vampyre I would say that this provides a very good opportunity. They've got 3 or more types of rather expendable races, made more so by sickness. It would be quite advantageous to use these sick individuals as test subjects rather than patients, the research that they could get would be very valuable to the empire, think biological weapons, methods of population control, a brute force method of finding out what makes people healthy etc. All this would be far more useful to the empire than it would be to ethically try to heal the patients.
