So todays update came with 5 pieces of lore, memories of guthix. I have to say, after reading these memories i really dont like these new pieces of lore. Not really for being negative towards guthix, but for the fact they're just bad pieces of lore and badly done. Some of them only serve to take away from guthix's character and even seem to outright contradict previous pieces of lore. So much so i'm having to ask myself who actually wrote this, and where they actually familiar with any of the already established lore in the game?

Aagi:
In time, you might come to see my choice to die as a selfish act, but i am decided. I have prepared for this for centuries, ever since you visited me and i became away of my fate. But if the mortals are not ready now, they never shall be. Maintaining the edicts has taken too much of a toll, and i cannot stall things forever. I am so very tired. I will leave you with a fighting chance, a glimmer of hope but you will have to find your own way, world guardian. Use the power i shall bestow upon you, the knowledge in these caches and the guidance of my guardians. If you should fail, then atleast the afterlife should welcome the fallen for a time, until that too fails

When i see you at my end, i shall tell you i wish to be with my wife and daughter in death. However, the truth is that i gave up my right to that a long time ago - unwittingly, but unequivocally. And though i know i shall never see my Aagi or Fraji again, i have lived long enough without them. In this place, i shall leave my strongest memories of them. Perhaps they too can help you in some way. I have knowingly left you with a great burden, world guardian. I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me

First memory is guthix speaking to us talking about how he wishes to die but leave us with a fighting chance. For a "dark memory" this one is alright because we already knew guthix wanted to die and see his family again, he didnt like mortals looking upto gods which includes himself and so wanted to remove himself

Seren:
I loved her, even though i knew it was a lie. Not real love. Not the love i felt for Fraji. But love all the same. Is it wrong to have latched onto that? To that strange power she possessed? Not to fight it, but to know it for what it is and accept it all the same? An illusion of connection. A facsimile of my heart in exchange for all of hers? Because i know she loved me. Genuine, true, beautiful love. The love that only the eternal can know, a love that spanned the rise and fall of empires. A beautiful lie. But i liked the lie. It was better than the loneliness of the truth and, really, could i ever find something better? So i lied to her. I kept lying to her. For centuries i whispered sweet promises i never really meant and spoke of eternities together, even though i knew our time was finite. Then the time came when i had to cast them all out and on that day i was grateful that it was a lie. It let me turn cold to her suffering, turn away from her misery. I cast her out and thought that would be the end of it. She chose another option. A way to be with all the people she loved, even me. It really was a beautiful lie

This one i have ALOT of problems with. This one seems to be saying guthix didnt care for seren at all but just kept her around to use her effect as a daily "fix" for his loneliness, lied to her the whole time then just shook her off at the end. We KNOW this isnt the case cus in the light within quest we ask guthix about seren and he says "i would wish nothing more than for her to stay, but the lesser gods have forced my hand. I must ask her to leave, though it breaks my heart to do so". We KNOW that guthix truly cared for seren and it caused him great sorrow

Heck this doesnt even make sense cus he says shattering herself was unexpected but he already knew she'd do that cus we told him she'd do that. I'm sorry but this entry just feels like what the last jedi did to luke skywalker and we all know how that went

Whoever wrote that didnt read the previous lore and i feel this should be changed or removed, its a direct contradiction

Juna:
I am sorry Juna, i have lied to you. I have been your idol, your god, your father. But i am the reason you are alone. It was a choice you see. It had to be one world or another and i chose the other world. Numbers, pure numbers. There were more of them than there were of you. As cold a reason for genocide as any other. So, i placed the lure on your world, a fountain of delicious anima for the blind beast to sniff out. She destroyed your world, but it was my fault. Another world lived because of that sacrifice, cold comfort though that may be. I wanted to save more of you. So i grabbed two eggs, you and your sister. I thought that perhaps if i could save a family it would be my absolution. I would have saved more, but the beast was on your world so fast, faster than i had dared think possible

So i saved you and your sister, two eggs. The last of their kind, i thought i could save you. I thought all you needed was me to look after you, but only you hatched. Only your egg survived. I couldn't bare the shame of you knowing, so i hid your sister. Buried her lifeless eff where no one will ever find it. And i never told you about her. Each time we meet i yearn to ask for your forgiveness. But then i see the look in your eyes. I see the standard to which you hold me. The hope, the faith, the love you have for me and my courage crumbles. I am so proud of you Juna. You are like a daughter to me, i hope you know that. And if you find this message, i pray that one day you can forgive me

This is another entry which i feel is a good one to include. Yes guthix did something bad by causing the destruction of a world, but he did so with good intentions of saving a much larger world. This is good character development, showing how he coped with an impossible choice of picking between 2 evils. Should of been more of this kind of stuff

Edicts:
Enough! My intention to be forgotten is futile if other gods fill the void in the hearts of mortals. This is not the fault of gods, but the folly of mortals to be meek and unquestioning. While i spend all my will stalling the inevitable end of mortality, while i waste my time protecting them from inevitable destruction, they instead dash their own lives on the alter of worship. Such futility, it must stop! Mortal life if brief enough as is. It should not be wasted in servitude to power, in worship of false idols, in the hopes of a reward beyond death. When will they learn that life itself is the reward? It should be treated as such, spent in joy and discovery, in time with loved ones, in the betterment of self

The petty tribal rivalries of so called gods are nothing but a distraction, and one i must try to remove. I shall evict the gods and their influence from this world, even though maintaining a barrier to keep them out will split my focus. As a result, i shall not be able to delay the inevitable for anywhere near as long as i had hoped. The elders will wake anew. But better for mortals to realise their end is nigh and start living their lived for it themselves, than me mollycoddling them and gifting them limitless time in which to act as sheep. They are blinded to this truth by their own folly. If allowing their end to come sooner will force them to open their eyes, then so be it

Ok this is another one i have issues with cus again it seems to be in DIRECT contradiction of already established lore. In this entry it says guthix set out to remove the gods and put up his edicts because the mortals where becoming too dependant on the gods. Well anyone who's actually played the game knows this isnt the case, its a well known fact he kicked all the gods off the world in a fit of rage after they nuked the world and literally burned the anima which in turn burned guthix himself. He kicked them out because he saw the damage they've done to the world, not because the mortals where becoming complacent

Infact its also known that guthix went to sleep at the end of the 1st age and didnt wake up until the end of the 3rd age when the nuke happened. He wasnt watching how the mortals where interacting with the gods, he was literally asleep through the entire time the gods where around. Yet again this feels like a piece of lore written by someone who didnt know the already established lore. Its direct contradictions to whats already been said so i'm gonna have to say this is another one which needs changing or infact removing

Cres:
How do you choose who to sacrifice? The caching of my knowledge is a task of great importance to the future survival of existence. But the being i select to fulfill this task is doomed. I know they must sacrifice all to complete the work - their humanity, their will, their peace beyond death. I know already when and how they will fall into oblivion, and yet there is no other way. The forbidden secrets of this universe and beyond must be recorded while i still live, so that they can be metered out only when the time is right

The great revision, the broken needle, the shadow breach. If that knowledge is lost, all things shall end. Not just life, not just the universe, everything. Time and space, life and death. I suppose death is the fairest way to choose. I shall request Harold to deliver the next suitable candidate to me, instead of to the underworld. They will have no choice but to become one of my guardians, and to perform this task for me, for everyone

This is a weird one. At first you'd think this would be talking about you but it actually appears to be talking about cres. It would seem he was originally human before guthix removed him at death and turned him into an automaton. A little weird but it seems to indicate 3 major events that are to happen which requires its own discussion. The great revision we already know. The broken needle likely refers to the elder needle, but why a broken elder artifact is "world ending" i dont know cus we destroyed the stone of jas without much consequence. Also i'm not sure if jagex could even use the elder needle cus isnt that in another game, wouldnt that cause problems? The 3rd event seems to be called the shadow breach, maybe theres a tear in the shadow realm itself somewhere and the dark beasts within are pouring out?

Overall i'm really disapointed with this set of lore entries, they feel like they where written by someone how has no knowledge of previously established lore. I've already highlighted 2 inparticular which outright contradict previous lore and quite frankly make no sense at all given the game as a whole and these characters in general. If i'm honest, i feel like these entries should be removed and redone, or better yet replaced with something else. Yes i know the point of this was to show the darker parts of guthix but this is NOT how you do it, this is just sloppy work and doesnt fit with the game

So what could you have done instead? Lets look at other characters when when you've shown their other sides. Saradomin did unspeakable things like ripping an icyene's wings off, but he always believed he was doing it for the greater good. Zamorack does terrible things like burning down villages, but again he believed it was for the greater good by forcing people to overcome problems and come out stronger for it, preventing the stagnation of society. Seren tricked the mahjarrat into sacrificing themselves leading to their extinction, but she did so in order to help mah. All of these great lore pieces show their characters darker sides but all of them did terrible things but for a greater good. Thats why they're good character developments. This however just isnt

If you wanted to show the darker deeds of guthix you where doing good with the aagi and juna entries. You showed his severe depression and how he had to make an impossible choice which weighed heavy on him, that is good development. You should have done more of that. Like talk about his thoughts after he shattered renmark, or how about how his exploration without caution shattered the elder sword and brought an unyeilding plague of pests into the world. You could have said how he tried intervening in other worlds but only made things worse and how it weighed on him, or with seren you SHOULD have talked about how it would have broken him and you could have had some good pieces on his dark thoughts after that

There was so much you could have done showing how his huberous lead to mistakes and caused pain for others, how he made terrible choices and how it effected him and his depression. All of these are good character developments, not saying "he was just a douche the whole time" as you did with the seren entry. And above all else i feel like you didnt actually check this lore before approving it, its actually outright wrong given whats been said ingame previously. I usually like lore, but i'm gonna have to say this time was very badly done and not very thought out =(

Actualy they show the hard choices he had to make. As well as the remorse he felt. Take Juna for example. It also shows that Guthix was willing to do what ever it took to keep the balance. It also shows him to have a "human side". What I mean by that, is that he was not always happy and jolly and full of light.

As for Seren, I belive he was telling himself it was a bueatiful lie, to try to comfort himself after he had to remove the other gods. They did in the past lore have some feelings for each other. So I feel the Seren one, was his attempt at coping with what he had to do.

Balance requires both light and dark.
