I guess that soon we will have so many gods that we will need a god for removal of spam gods, but the only one doing it so far - Sliske - was no god, just a troll pretending to clearing the world from unnecessary and unrelated gods, but was being shown as false and troll in the end, so he was the one being erased from existence.

In old times gods made themselves by both their actions and believer's support, now are just being spawned to fulfill a predetermined purpose and discarded, making their efforts of sorting out and changing the content of the world somewhat undermined from beginning.

So I think that since we can't rely on natural clearing of belief-market, and player can hardly effectively argue with a god of overnight-one purpose written lore, we need to look on a bigger picture and don't fall in specific categorization of one god's agenda, but rather try to use all our characteristics at once, unlimited by one direction of purpose and perhaps choosing a god that hasn't only one main priority but gives all our ideas equal space.

Unfortunately, Jagex decided to go all-out and remove the moral nuances of the gods, choosing shades of gray instead. I do miss the good-bad dichotomy of Saradomin and Zamorak with Guthix in the middle, as Saradomin intentionally reflected the Judeo-Christian view of God while Zamorak reflected Satan and Guthix reflected the forces of nature and balance.

But now, since the gods returned to Gielinor, Jagex has pushed things towards Saradomin being a greedy and selfish jerk with Zamorak being more along the lines of chaotic neutral with good intentions despite his evil actions, while Guthix is anti-theist, Zaros wants to become the force of fate, Seren agrees with Guthix but is aloof otherwise, etc.

However, that being said, the storytelling of the gods is far better now than it was back in the day, so I'm not really complaining. After all, the planet's name -- Gielinor -- is an anagram for religion just as the game's core storyline has become less about random adventures and more of a metaphor showcasing the varieties of religion and faith, reminding everyone that extremism is not a good thing. I think they go a little too far in the direction of the Guthixian/Godless anti-theism but at least they give us the chance to align our characters with whichever god we want to.

I, myself, align with Seren and not just because I love elves in fantasy. Sure, she's anti-theistic like Guthix, but ultimately, she just wants peace and light to prevail in Gielinor and isn't going to go to the extreme of killing any gods just to prove her point. In my headcanon/character roleplay, she's the closest to what my character wants for the planet.

May I just say that in my many years of playing I never realized this? *mind is blown*

And about the removal of the clear distinction between 'good' and 'bad': I guess it is really personal preference if you like this change or not. For me, having something designated as the obvious good and bad really detracts from the story and immersion, for that is not how things normally work. Even though the setting of runescape is fantasy, I do like to have some sort of realism that makes the stories more believeable than just having a bad person for *reasons*.

Haha they never really advertised it but yeah, I saw that on the RS Wiki when I was reading the article about Gielinor itself.

I'm ok with both types of fantasy: the kind with clear morality and the kind with the shades of gray. However, the shades of gray kind has been way overdone with RPGs in general as of late, which is unfortunate. I miss RPGs with clear-cut morality like, say, The Elder Scrolls, where you play as the good guy saving the world from the bad guys. But I do see the point about how life isn't always black & white, I just personally do try my best IRL to align myself on the good side of morality.
