So we saved the world, a few times now, from an evil wizard that was enslaving souls for his purely ambitious purposes. Now we're capturing souls also for our personal gain with the soul codex.

Are we as evil as Nomad? Maybe not quite as evil but still pretty evil, right? I mean, monkeys and kalphites and dragons have souls, we're capturing these souls and preventing them to pass into the afterlife so we can keep them in a personal dungeon.

Or is there a loop I missed that can keep us as the good guys in this story?

Nobody is going to bat an eye if we slaughter Abyssal demons, Dark beasts, or anything really on the Slayerdex list. Nomad used specifically human souls, that was the issue. We're.. as far as I know.. unable to collect souls from the level 2 men and women we see wandering around Lumbridge.

So we're really not doing anything wrong.

We murdered hundreds of men and women when we were noobs.
We killed guards in all cities and no one did anything about it.
We steal a cake, and every guard within 20 feet tries to dog pile us.

I just look at it as for the souls of that Elf and Dwarf I caught for the Codex, and I guess the other species as well ... their sacrifice is doing a greater service.

No longer do we have to go out and kill scores of their brethren for a Slayer Task.
We can just kick back, and torture those few that we caught.

Now, their comrades can live in relative peace and safety from the me/us (The World Guardian).

As the Vulcans say "the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few."

It's a bit of a human-centric view of things in a world with so many sentient races. Mammoths, camel warriors or avianses even seem to have even a culture and honour. Demons also have a society and advanced intelligence, think about the ones you talked to in quests, even if they were evil -- like we are? is the question.

Isn't it rather questionable to mess about with the souls of a hill giant, a cow? Where do we draw the line? Humans not OK, but yes to elves, chickens, dagannoths, airuts? Note that it's not just killing, it's also imprisioning souls so we can terrorise them time and time again.

I go back to my 1st post: if we're capturing them for our personal gain, not for any beneficial purpose for the world, are we so different from Nomad? Difference seems to be we only require a handful of souls, not many. Can we have just those, pretty please?

Yes. Embrace it.

Guess this says it all, embrace a lil' bit of evil ;)

I really don't much mind a darker, self-interested character, honestly its who we are as a player. Only feel it's at odds with most of the adventurer's lore.
