Doesn't Kharshai indicate somewhere that he would like the Mahjarrat to find a way to sustain themselves without any need for the rituals? I could see Kharshai attempting something, but it backfires horribly, so rather than freeing themselves from the ritual, he instead gave them a greater need for it.

I also think Seren doing it would make sense, though I hope that it would be less dependent on how complete she is, since there are four different ways she could be built.

While I know people say that Elder Gods can't be killed, Jagex's general policy is that what they say in outside sources such as Q&A's are only canon unless the game says otherwise, because the game does take precedence. I do think that Mah will die in this quest, and this would offer the reason why. Someone might come to the conclusion that the only way to free the Mahjarrat from this is to kill Mah, removing the source of what is draining their energy.

Plus, Ollie's interest in RuneFest was about potentially giving the Mahjarrat their own story pillar. While they've already had their own storyline, I think he meant making them into a proper pillar of the Sixth Age, which would make sense. His main reason was that the Mahjarrat are too tied to their own factions, and as he pointed out in the stream, all the factions of GWD2 are Children of Mah. As much as I appreciate Mah's role, she does ultimately make the Mahjarrat insignificant compared to her, especially while Sliske is in the spotlight. Removing Mah would allow the Mahjarrat a better chance to stand out, while also contributing to the scoreboard of Sliske's Endgame, and offering some more setup for when they will properly focus on the Elder God pillar.

But this thread is mostly about Seren. Sliske's Endgame is supposed to establish what her role will be in the Sixth Age, and this quest would be a good place to inform how she comes into that role.

I'm trying to think of some real world reasons why the Ritual effect would wear off.

- is it like caffeine or sugar or any chemical addiction? at first, it works great. but over time, you need more and more to keep the same level of effect. otherwise the high only lasts a little while

- is it like resistance? their power isn't exactly their own anymore. they've absorbed the power of dozens of others. each a fragment added to their own. but each of those additions is like adding another resistor to an electrical circuit but you have the same amount of voltage in the battery after it fills up. to get the output you wanted before, you have to expend more power.

- could it be a form of revenge? each one that dies curses the others out of spite. the other rejuvenate, but get weaker and weaker over time

- a flaw in Seren's original ritual? she meant well, but simply miscalculated. or her plan was intended to work for the short term, not 10000 years.

- something Seren did intentionally? her original focus was Mah, not her little "siblings". so she used them to stabilize Mah. The Mahjerrat and others would eventually disappear, but that was meaningless to someone nigh-immortal like herself and Mah. They would serve their purpose for millenia, as long as they kept having children, this "flaw" would not be an issue.
however, when the Mahjerrat came to Runescape and stopped having children ....

The design may have changed (Just look at Kindred Spirits), but I have another idea. Mah is supposed to be attempting to create her own universe. Perhaps the Mahjarrat are actually being drained as the first step of Mah's "revision"? Since Mah has awoken, she wouldn't need Seren to organize the rituals as a medium to drain the Mahjarrat's energy. Mah can just drain them herself.

How long has Mah been stirring from her sleep? Could it have been going on since the Temple at Senntisten, when the dark mage at the Abyss thought he nearly lost the universe? If the prayer power penetrated Freneskae from Gielinor, the two furthest planets from each other, and came out in pulsating waves, could that have jolted Mah slightly and shook the Abyss as a result? Prepare for hell on RuneScape in Naval Cataclysm!

"As soon as she started to weaken, I left. It seems that our presence has stirred Mah. When you awake we will have to deal with the consequences."

It sounds like she hadn't be disturbed until Fate of the Gods, so I doubt that The Temple at Senntisten did anything. Reaching her Cradle was when she began to wake up. The Abyss was instead meant to be her means of going from Freneskae to Gielinor.

I agree with you. I think that Mah's days are numbered. Her death would allow the Mahjarrat to be free of the rituals and at the same time stop Mah from her revision. The elders are capable of dying as Zaros mentioned there were once more but the lack of Anima caused many to perish. As we know, Mah isn't as powerful as her sisters due to her lack of anima and thus this could be a means for her death. Plus I think slaying an elder god is likely going to have a huge impact on Sliskes board compared to slaying a normal god. The real challenges here will be how to slay Mah and what happens to her "dreams" when shes gone. Maybe Seren becomes the new source of sustainability for the Mahjarrat.
I have seen the dark universe yawning, where the black planets roll without aim;
Where they roll in their horror unheeded, without knowledge or lustre or name.

Aren't they already free of the rituals if they wanted to be? My understanding is that the Rituals on Gielinor artificially extend their lifespans and powers beyond what's normal. After all the original purpose was to calm Mah down, but they didn't need to do that on Gielinor. Zaros taught them to use the Rituals instead as a means of keeping themselves strong.

Maybe Sliske will give someone six points if they kill Mah? If Zaros or possibly Seren killed Mah, then they'd have exact as many points as Sliske, but Zamorak would only have five points because Sliske would still count the loss of the Battle of Lumbridge.

Though you made a good point about the Mahjarrat being her dreams. That would raise a question of whether or not they need some "anchor" to keep them alive. I would hope not, since Ollie seems interested in developing each Mahjarrat beyond which faction they serve, and having someone take up Mah's old role might go against that.

I don't think he taught them to keep themselves strong. He simply saw it as a waste of life, and encouraged them to spread the rituals out. Plus, it's implied that he realized Seren made the ritual, so he was probably spiting her.
