I have a nerve issue that keeps me from using a mouse for more than around 20ish minutes at a time. I like playing RS because it's very relaxing and chill, but my nerve won't let me do it. Using a controller keeps my arm and wrist in a more straight configuration while playing, which lets me play for several hours without it feeling strained. I tried using JoyToKey to play RS for a couple hours one day to see if it was possible, and it worked fantastically for what I do (basically just slayer and skilling). Unfortunately I contacted Jagex's customer support and asked them if it violates TOS and it does. They said anything that modifies input to the game is against TOS. They recommended I post on the forums to try to get enough support behind adding controller support for it to be worth them putting the time into developing it. Even if they won't add controller support, at least let us use a program to rebind keyboard and mouse functionality to a controller. So please anyone who has any kind of issues with mouse and keyboard help me convince Jagex to either change their TOS and let us use 3rd party programs or add native controller support. I've played for almost 15 years now, and I would like to continue playing. If they don't add controller support or let us use 3rd party programs, I won't be able to play anymore sadly. Also any mods that know of a better place for this post feel free to let me know and I'll repost it to the appropriate place.

Hi there,

I think controller support would be fantastic. nothing too fancy, both analogs could control the mouse and the triggers + bumpers could be left and right click with a reverse option if necessary. This would really help on mobile as well with players having small screens. Some could make use of their controllers with phone mounts.

But i can understand this also makes it hard to control players from abusing the clicking with modded controllers. In the end i would love to see some form of support for controllers one day. A lot of them are easier to hold for prolong play.
Nothing beats a good night's sleep.

I don't think it would really cause any extra issues with exploiting modding controllers. There are already auto-clickers out there, and anything that's not 1 input:1 output is against their TOS. I really don't understand the problem with just letting us use a 3rd party program to play their game. They already let us use RuneLite, which technically modifies input to the game with shift-click options. CHECKMATE. I literally just want to be able to play the game like I used to without having to worry about causing further strain to my nerve.

My setup was using x to right click, a to left click. b was escape, y is spellbook fkey, start was inventory fkey, d-pad was 1-4 for chat options, right trigger was space also for chat options. I don't remember the others, but it was honestly pretty nice for doing most things. I think pvmers could do most content with a controller.

Sorry if it seems like a rant at you, it's not. I'm just frustrated by how long I've supported this game, but they wouldn't even consider taking a look at their TOS and seeing if there was some compromise we could come to. I've probably honestly put enough money into this game between membership payments, and MTX to pay for controller support by myself.

I've got the 5 year crown on this account, probably higher ones by now, but I mostly play OSRS now so I haven't checked. Also that didn't even become a thing until years after I started playing. Being extremely generous with the amount of years I've paid for membership and assuming it's 5, that math looks like 5 x 12 = 60, so 60 months x $9.99 = $599.40. The fact that membership was cheaper when I first started playing probably offsets a bit of the estimations. That's not even counting MTX that I bought when I had nothing better to spend my money on at the time.

I don't think controller support would cost more than $600, and ,even if it did, looking at the TOS and changing their outlook on 3rd party programs would surely be cheaper. Currency is USD

As someone who has worked as a programmer, I can assure you that it could - and likely would - cost far more than $600 to implement controller support.

That said, I'm otherwise in a similar boat as you. I have nerve issues that make it painful to use a mouse and keyboard for prolonged time periods, but controllers are easier to use.

I'd also love to see controller support, whether implemented natively or just allowed through something like JoyToKey.

Use your phone! It's like a controller!

A phone is a good suggestion, and I've experimented with it somewhat. I don't think it's a great long-term solution though - I find the screen is so small it leads to eye strain and bad, or at least sub-optimal, posture. I also find it difficult to click (tap) reliably on small things like inventory items. (That said, I do acknowledge that some people may have gotten more mileage out of the mobile app.)

JoyToKey is such an innocent program. Why is that against there rules? Furthermore, how on earth does Jagex enforce it? Personally, I've only used JoyToKey to play some old Tomb Raider games, but it's not like the program does anything malicious.

As Wraith Cobra said earlier, things that modify input (not 1:1) aren't allowed (it's a little baffling to me that RuneLite is though).

Interestingly, JoyToKey doesn't NEED to modify input to be anything more than 1:1, although certainly CAN be used to do so. That said, I do acknowledge that policing the difference would be hard for Jagex to do.

I would love to be able to play with a controller. Whether it would be implemented as a functionality into the game itself or if we could be allowed use a simple 3rd party program that would let us control the pointer with a controller stick and left click/right click and all the basic things.

I have a shoulder that gets inflamed very easily, and when I play rs for hours a day, that quickly becomes a problem. Being able to use a controller for certain laid back activities such as skilling would reduce the strain on my shoulder by a lot as those activities demand a lot of time just sitting there with one arm stretched out (whereas the other can rest on my lap) which results in my arm/shoulder constantly or nearly constantly being strained in those cases even if it's a low intensity skilling activity.
