Apparently I caused quite a stir in certain circles as soon after, some members of the Order of Wizards from the Wizards’ Tower near Draynor Village arrived on my doorstep. They hid their intrigue poorly, perhaps intentionally to subtly influence my joining them. It didn’t take a lot to get me on board. Mother and Father, assured of my wellbeing, showed no qualms. They were convinced by the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and having one less mouth to feed. I was slightly perturbed at their willingness to let me go so easily, but the excitement of becoming a wizard was greater.

In just a few short days, I was at the Tower dressed in blue robes and ready to begin my studies. They went well. I progressed leaps and bounds ahead of my peers and would make a pretty penny in the nearby village as a kind of performer. The real crowd-pleaser was my binding of the resident Dark Wizard, much to the villager’s delight. The Order weren’t particularly fond of this tomfoolery, but I was improving relations with the villagers and a student they were not keen to lose, so they let it slide.

This brings us to teleportation. I had been away from home for some weeks and never having left Varrock for more than a day or so at a time, I was feeling rather homesick, even if home was the gang-riddled slum that is South Varrock. I began working young and after starting, I never stopped. Mother and Father also work hard. Father is a manual labourer at the sawmill (which is how I got to sweeping there) and Mother does housework for the mansions in North Varrock. Between the three of us, we have never been able to save enough for even a short trip to Falador.

I was appointed a personal tutor to make sure no potential experience was wasted waiting for my peers to catch up, Wizard Erudall. She suggested teleporting as the next area of study, a school of magic I was eager to learn from for some time.

Wizard Erudall provided me with some reading material and law runes to study. She confiscated any personal runes from my quarters in the event of an overzealous student. This should have been a warning to me, but I was too enthusiastic about my studies and returning home. Although I hadn’t known my tutor for as much as a fortnight, it pains me to think of this betrayal. She had every opportunity to warn me of the reality of teleportation. It is not as simple and convenient as everyone pretends it is.

The next morning we were ready to begin. I anxiously thumbled with the law runes in my robe’s pocket and Wizard Erudall provided me with three air runes and a fire rune. I expected this as the spellbook she’d given me detailed the requisites. Book learning can only provide so much, so she demonstrated how to channel the magic through the runes and produce a result, to focus on how the threads of reality seem to contort and shift to the rhythm of the runes and most importantly, to seize and exploit that malleability to transport yourself from one place to another. I was eager to begin and she gave me the authorisation.
