I am writing this forum post to voice my concerns over the recent "Inclusivity and Diversity Updates" implemented in Varrock, the uneven representation of minority groups in special in-game events, and the presence of racially insensitive content in the game.

While I appreciate the intention to create a more diverse and inclusive environment within the game, the execution of these updates appears to be sending the wrong message. After taking the time to explore Varrock thoroughly, I noticed that all the city's residents are white, with the exception of the black guards and two black individuals working at the Grand Exchange. This representation creates a troubling implication: it seems as if there are no black citizens living in Varrock, and they are only brought in to work in undesirable positions or serve as guards.

Moreover, I am concerned about the selective representation of minority groups in special in-game events. Jagex has created a limited-time event for the LGBT community, yet they have not made similar efforts to acknowledge or celebrate other minority groups, such as creating a Black History Month update or recognizing Latino holidays. This selective approach to inclusion undermines the goal of fostering a diverse and welcoming environment for all players.

Additionally, I am troubled by the continued presence of racially insensitive content in the game, such as "The Feud" quest. This quest portrays desert inhabitants with the same name, "Ali," and depicts them as scammers, perpetuating harmful stereotypes about foreigners. It is concerning that Jagex chooses to leave such content in the game while attempting to alter other aspects for the sake of diversity and inclusion.

I urge Jagex to reconsider the implementation of their "Inclusivity and Diversity Updates" and work towards a more thoughtful and genuine representation of diversity within the game. It is also important that all minority groups are fairly represented and celebrated.

Thanks for sharing your concerns. I'm not speaking on behalf of the company but I'd wager that the LGBT community is represented with events and so forth due to the specific and often targetted attacks they face in gaming communities in general.

That's not to say the rest of the player base isn't as diverse as you say it is. RS and OSRS players come from all over the world and that is a wonderful thing. :)

It's worth noting that RS lore is full of tongue in cheek humour across the entirely game and not just limited to the examples you identified.

A few other things have been done with regards to changing a few quests recently like the Miscellenia series by ensuring anyone can marry anyone if need be so I do think Jagex is always taking this into consideration even if such changes happen incrementally and over the course of time.

In response to your post, I appreciate the points you've made, and I agree that the LGBT community faces targeted harassment in gaming communities, which might be one of the reasons Jagex chose to create events for them. However, it's crucial to acknowledge that people of color and other marginalized groups, such as heavyset individuals, also face significant harassment and discrimination in gaming circles.

The casual use of racial slurs like the n-word is unfortunately all too common in gaming communities, and it's essential for game developers like Jagex to address these issues as well. While it's commendable that Jagex has made some efforts towards inclusivity, it's important to ensure that all groups facing discrimination and harassment are represented and treated fairly within the game.

An inclusive gaming environment should consider the diverse experiences and backgrounds of all players, and Jagex could benefit from expanding their initiatives to include events or content that celebrate and support a broader range of communities, such as people of color or individuals facing body-shaming.

It's essential to recognize that progress often happens incrementally, and Jagex may continue to make changes over time. However, as players, we can keep voicing our concerns and advocating for a more inclusive and welcoming gaming community for everyone.

I agree with your general gist and the direction you'd want the game to take, on a high level I agree with you too outside of changing existing old school content even if it seems tone deaf today, because even in the Gower days it was never intended to be like that.

I think it's constructive for Jagex to focus on areas that are specific to the demographics in the gaming community first. I think targeting issues like gender equality and supporting the LGBT community was an appropriate start because they're probably the biggest targets of trolling and abuse when you look at game streaming and gaming communities in general. Doing sends a clear enough message to promote inclusivity amongst all groups like the ones you mentioned.

You mentioned casual use of slurs; and I agree. I see it all the time and sadly certain in game clan chats/communities have them more than other places and there definitely needs to be more done on that front.

Treat everyone, regardless of who they are, with the respect due them. (hint: it's the same for everyone. The only cases that any respect due would be lacking is if you personally are aware of an undeniable truth of criminal activity from another, and even then at least be civil). That's it--we don't need anything else. If everyone were to follow that, we would not have any problems with inclusivity or discrimination.

Now that that's out of the way, this is a game. Not a political platform or whatever. Keep your agendas out of the game please. I'm happy to treat everyone like the wonderful human beings we all are, but there is a time and place for more than this--it does not belong absolutely everywhere, as that just makes the problem worse. After all, if everyone forgets about human failings of the past we are doomed to repeat them. Only through knowing what is wrong can we consciously be sure we are able to steer clear of perpetuating it.

Think about culture clash, for example. It's not uncommon for two different cultures to offend one another with otherwise innocent actions simply because they do not know the values of the other. Similarly, if a person were somehow unaware that treating someone differently because of what they look like or what they think is wrong, then why would they necessarily try and steer clear? They don't know it's wrong! I think it is important to leave such otherwise discriminatory behavior (i.e. as pointed out in "the feud&quot ;) in the game, while ensuring it is properly framed such that it is clear to any partaking of the content that this is what we should be striving to avoid, whether from a foreword before the quest that breaks the 4th wall or whatever plot telling device you would prefer to illustrate that humanity should strive to be beyond such foul behavior.

P.S. I fully expect some here to see my rejection of further inclusivity in game as proof I'm "an obvious bigot." While you would be 100% wrong, I still wish you well.
