I always thought that was supposed to work as a quote feature. Strange it doesn't.

Same here.

It was just the way to post before quick reply. It could be updated like that I guess, but doesn't seem like it would be any more useful than the actual quote button.

Yeah they ought to do away with it in my opinion. Maybe add something more useful there.
