Respectfully I'd say that you can't really have a wilderness without a free for all nature. There's tweaks like singles vs multi etc but the wilderness exists in its own area purely so you don't have to engage in its content if you do not want to.

There used to be a time when PvP was worldwide and the wilderness replaced that in August of 2001.

I also don't really think that it glorifies uncalled for violence either given that it is unambiguously a fantasy game. :)

Last night, I went into the wild to see about killing green dragons. I did not expect to have a safe trip, so I took only a bronze crossbow and bronze bolts. As expected, I got pked. THAT is the way of the wild. The guy spent more on runes to kill me than I carried.
