Hello friends. Just returned to RS after a nearly 11 year break. And now, I’m hooked all over again. Very pleased to have just achieved a total level of 350 on my new account. I was hoping the awesome OSRS community could bring me up to speed on some of the new activities that have come out in recent years.

I must say, I’m sad to see that we’ve lost some of the features we had back in 2011. I miss the tool belt, resting by musicians, skilling in clan citadels, dungeoneering, summoning, etc. But it sure was nice of Jagex to provide us with a pre-EOC server!

My favorite activities before I left were pest control and dungeoneering. The sacred clay place was fun too. Is there any activity that works similarly to dungeoneering, in the sense that you utilize all the skills in it?

Welcome back! I'm also a returning player too if you want to be friends in game. I don't think there is something similar to dungeoneering but I really like the rouges den because its a combo of agility and theiving. Gaurdians of the Rift is another mini game that uses a few skills to do too and is a fun way to level up runecrafting.

You can add me in game if you would like ^_^

You lost far more than dungeoneering, summoning and such.

Basically you lost most of the major content including all the quests, miniquests and lore based content between 2007 and 2013.

Not just Stealing Creation, you also lost a whole lot of minigames like The Great Orb Project, Flash Powder Factory, Conquest, Fist of Guthix, Penguin Hide & Seek, Evil Tree etc.

As such you also lost most of the skilling outfit rewards, as well as numerous cosmetics.

The even more important loss in OSRS is the 5 or 6 years of technology investment in RS2 is gone now. You lost all the wonderful multiplayer and grouping systems like Clan Citadel and lootshare/coinshare. Of course you lost the bot busting technologies like Botany Bay, that's why bots are running rampant in 2023.

The communities then and now are grossly different too. In 2023, OSRS's community is like 80% 3PCs or players previously from private servers and not allowed in 2011.

Pretty much, OSRS in 2023 is not about character progression anymore. It is made up of a bundle of game modes that require you to restart from scratch like GIM, Leagues, DMM or make your earned progression almost useless like LMS where everybody is at the same levels. We really can't compare OSRS in 2023 to RS2 11 years ago.

It's a bit odd what they've chosen to bring back or not. My biggest complaint is that they brought back soul wars, but not stealing creation. I get that the rewards would be a problem, but lots of minigames have had thier rewards system remade. Bring back stealing creation!

This is all very informative, and I appreciate all your input. Really disappointed that stealing creation is gone, I didn’t know that. I’m gonna miss penguin hide and seek too. I used to use all that extra control on prayer and summoning, since they were the big money eating skills.

Has Jagex shown any signs of restoring those lost multiplayer technologies, like loot share and clan citadels? I see them working on new content, like Desert Treasure 2.

It is much easier to bring some old lore back to the game, but not so simple to restore all missing systems and program codes between 2007 and 2013. It took OSRS almost 3 years to bring the Clan System to the game, this should give you an idea how much behind is OSRS to even RS2 before the 2013 level, let alone the status of most modern MMOs.

DT2 is based on the old Mahjarrat stories that eventually lead to Ritual of the Mahjarrat. OSRS can copy some key lore from the past, but they can't afford to copy all the 18 missing quests there because this will probably take them 6 years with their current project release design.

To make technologies even a bigger problem in OSRS is they allow 3PC but have no control and no understanding on their codes. Every time they tried to add new features to the OSRS engine, they run a risk of breaking not just old OSRS and mobile codes, but also 3PCs.

Besides, when it takes so much money, effort and risk to add a just tiny bit of functionality to an old game like OSRS, from the business perspectives it is hard to see why Jagex won't be making new games rather.

Welcome back to the game and welcome to the forums!

There isn't really an equivalent that uses all skills as the game is still based in 2007 as far as the trainable skills are concerned.

Nevertheless do use the forums to come up with ideas and pitch them with your core motivations explained.

In the meantime though, enjoy the game! :)

Welcome back.

A good bit of the reason it feels so different is rs3 basically became clanscape. Dung even punish people for being soloist, the way the game was created. IF you were part of a clan, you got 25 times the reward for your effort. Add all the other things you got as a clan member, and it was difficult to play as a soloist. Osrs is back to the basic soloist game, although they do have some benefits for clans, its not overpowering like rs3 became.

There are several minigames where you can choose to play it as a team (more or less) or soloist without being penalized for doing either. You can still socialize and such, but it does not have the feeling that you have to do so even if you do not want that kind of game.

They brought back Soul Wars mostly because of their Partnership initiative with Prime Gaming. OSRS just sold out exclusive Early Access Beta servers exclusively for Prime. It was MTX driven. ;)
