I keepsaked a steel hatchet and steel pickaxe to override my dragon equivalents when woodcutting/mining.
Unfortunately, as soon as the animation starts, the override is disabled.
Note: this is the case for both my dragon tools (which are equipped) and my rune tools (which are stored in my toolbelt).
I don't see the point in being able to keepsake a pickaxe if it's not going to override during the animation.
I'm going for a medieval look and a fancy red pickaxe just doesn't fit the bill.

I really wish there was a way to not disadvantage dual-wield items compared to 2h items. Ideally, we should be able to store an offhand and a mainhand with the same key. I don't mind if this feature is only implemented for items with identical main and offhand weapons, but I think it would be amazing if we didn't have to use twice as many keys to override a dual-wield setup compared to a 2h setup.

I'm having the same problem. I bought some keepsake keys after the recent update specifically to override the hatches and pickaxes used in the relevant skill animations. (I don't want other players laughing at the low level equipment I've got stored in my tool belt!)

No, it will only override a pickaxe you are wielding (sheathed, unsheathed or in combat).

(It's very weird when I walk up to a mining rock holding my cosmetic primal pickaxe in my hand. When I start mining it transforms into the dragon pickaxe I am actually holding, then changes back when I stop.)

Personally, I think weapon keepsakes should work like armor keepsakes. No matter what you're wearing or if you aren't wearing anything at all, it shows up. It's not like you can fool people in a pvp match anyways, since overrides automatically disable. So what's the point of limiting players who buy the overrides for cosmetics when it wont hurt anything to let them always have the cosmetic they want?
