I want to add that ALL of my friends have quit! I have stayed because I have been working for a slayer cape (something that cannot be botted.) I now wear my slayer cape with pride in the hard, long work I put into getting it.
But, now, slayer capes can be bought with xp from Squeal etc. This means that my cape will have become worthless just like woodcutting, agility, runecrafting and all other capes that can be received from buying bot programs.
You can't carry on conversations with all of the bots that are currently "playing" Runescape. So, though you show many players online, the number of bots are many more than real players in many spots in Runescape.
I had someone who wanted me to partner him now in doing slayer since I am 99 there. He had 99s in all the botting skills but was unhappy about actually doing the work to get the slayer cape. I am sure he was also getting xp from Squeal.
He was not the kind of friend I want to have!
This new ability to buy xp is one of the reasons that Runescape is dying. I am very sad about it.
Yes, I still play. No, I would never buy runecoins for anything. I tried the beta and did not like it at all though I understand they are making improvements to it. Whether it will become popular remains to be seen. Though, I don't think it will matter if Jagex does not get rid of the bots. After all, there may not be enough real players people left eventually for gold farmers etc to make any money from!
