Jagex released a game called 8Realms, which is due to be shut down on July 1st, due to it not making enough money for them. Many of you reading this will know the game I'm talking about.
I was in on that game at the start when I joined the Beta. The Beta version was great, but it needed a few tweaks to get it just right. But instead of fixing what was wrong, they introduced a system where players could use RW cash to buy "gems". The gems allowed exploitation of the wonky game mechanics which let people who were willing to buy them to get ahead much faster.
Consequently, huge numbers of players left the game in disgust and now Jagex say that they have to shut down the game because it doesn't have enough players to make it profitable. All they had to do was fix the gameplay problem and charge a monthly fee. They would have had a fantastic game which was fair and which people enjoyed playing.
Now I'm wondering, is Runescape about to go the same way? I sincerely hope someone comes to their senses before that happens.
This must be making Andrew Gower sick to the stomach.
You know the reason for that?
