I can't say I know what I'm looking at when I watch the video, nothing definitive yet. Though I'm always excited for drastic change, come what may, it's always an immersive experience. I can't say that what we're playing is even RS2 anymore to begin with, let alone a whole new playing field.
On that note, is a beta for this necessary? More like is selection for it necessary? I believe anyone who is willing to test and provide constructive feedback should be able. It doesn't make sense that you would siphon players off when the content ultimately affects everyone.
I would wager that had more people been on top of the eoc beta, that we would currently be playing a much different game. The most activity the worlds got was during the weekends, and even then the number of people was nowhere near ideal, and the amount that would provide feedback were even fewer. To make matters worse: the forums were flooded with hate, spam, and the occasional well thought out post that was lost at sea. I can see how drastic change might cause this to happen again, but there's really nothing to complain about when it comes to graphical change. It's usually for the better.
To re-iterate: Is an exclusive beta for this ABSOLUTELY, note the emphasis, necessary? Loyalty and play-time aside, it's not something that needs to be kept away.
Those who are going to be affected by the update:all(bar java die-hards)
Those who will have access: a portion
Those who probably want to take part in it: a larger majority.
I think a poll to see how much interest there is in the 'beta' should be created, ultimately ruling out those that either don't care either way or want nothing to do with it. Should the poll reach a certain number in favor, you have an open beta.
This is the best constructive solution in my honest opinion.
